View Full Version : Help!!
Hi, I am in the Uk and am looking for a bit of advice on getting a good quality ultralite bag (probably 15 - 20 degrees) and a two-skin, 2 person ultralite 3 season tent, both at a reasonable price - total budget about $500 - can you guys offer me any advice on what might be good options.
Thanks,
Michael.
The best sleeping bag you can buy is the Western Mountaineering Ultralight. In the long size, it weighs a bit under 2 lbs and is good down to 20 degrees. I've been using one for a couple of years now and it is in good shape, depsite seeing a lot of usage. It will set you back about $325.
Thinking about the Marmot Helium and a Montbell Hexagon tent - any ideas on these?

For sleeping bags, I'd check out 2 fine manufacturer's on your island: PHD Mountain Software (http://www.phdesigns.co.uk)and Rab (http://www.rab.uk.com/). If you want an import, then Western Mountaineering, Marmot, and Feathered Friends are all fine choices.

i agree with the western mountaineering ultralite (1 lb 13 oz, packs very small, 20 degrees - my wife and i like to refer to it as "the generator" it's so warm). used it on my thru. it kicks ass. too bad it now smells like ass.
i wrestled with the WM ultralite and Caribou for about 6 months. since most of my camping/hiking is in the southern USA, and due to some durability concerns i had with the ultralite's fabric, i decided on the caribou (35*, 20oz). but if i had lived further north, the ultralite would have been the winner. if you want a slightly larger cut around the shoulders, try their alpenlite. i have never heard a bad word about WM bags.
the Marmot Helium is another highly praised bag, similar to the ultralite... think it only has a 3/4 length zipper though, but you can check all that out yourself.
can't vouch for a tent, as i use a HH BP Asym... love it, won't sleep on the ground anymore...

I almost bought the MSR Hubba Hubba before I got my hammock. Very light for a two-wall free-standing tent. About $200, IIRC. Their Zoid 2.0 seems like a good choice, too. I think both are reviewed at www.backpackgeartest.org (http://www.backpackgeartest.org).
That leaves you $300 for the WM or FF bag...everyone who's used them seems to love them. Check Nunatak, too.
