View Full Version : HH Side Tie Outs?

Do you all really think the side tie outs make a difference in your level of comfort in your HH? Mine were a pain to manage and keep untangled, even with snakeskins, so I took them off. There is slightly more fabric closer to my head and feet this way, but I don't think it has affected my comfort one bit. Anybody else try this? What do you think?

i've tried it with and without the corners tied out, and i prefer the ties... seems roomier somehow. also, i like to see out, and i can't do that as well with the corners loose... finally, it keeps the mosquito netting taut, so they can't bite me in the knee...

I don't think it makes a difference in how comfortable it lays, but I like the roominess. I tie mine out about half the time...if there's a convenient root or bush or something.
Use them 100% of the time. They open up the hammock, let me see out and dampen the swaying after I enter. Don't like the feel of swaying.

for me it makes all the difference. I don't get that wrapped in a taco feeling. I use them 100% of the time. SUe/HH
I use the tie outs all the time. Much roomier and lessens the sway. As for comfort not much difference. I always carry stakes so no need to find anything to tie too.

That's funny...I love the sway, and when I use the tie-out I often pull on the hammock right next to the tie-out and try to get a tiny bit of sway for just a second!
FatMan, I carry stakes for the tarp, but I don't set up the tarp unless I have to. When I set it up, I'll put the HH tie-outs on the same stakes.
But I like the sway...that's one reason I think Speers are more comfy than HHs...I can reach out and push off the ground or something to start myself swaying.
I run them through my hiking poles loopholes to adjust the height - that helped.

Thanks, Guys. FWIW, I like the sway and wish there was an easy way to get even more!

Errrkkk...I hate the sway. Makes me really sea sick...
i like the rocking too... wish there was a way to tie off to a tree so a branch blowing in the wind would rock you all the time... reminds me of falling asleep while fishing... gently rocking boat, warm sun, wind in the trees.... ZZZzzzz....
LOVE the sway. And I'm someone who gets nauseous extremely easily. I've been trying to think of a good way to run a cord or something out the exit in such a way that I could easily rock the hammock.

I used my Hennessey this past weekend, and although I was better on the set up, I obviously am not a master yet. I haven't had enough practice. Although that 2 hour nap Saturday afternoon was HUGE !@!@
The problem is this...my side tie-outs don't really seem to open up the hammock. Maybe the problem is that I am tieing (sp?) them out to a stake on the ground insead of a higher thing like another tree. The first night that was the only choice....stake on the ground.
The other problem I had was that I was still cold Friday night even though it was relatively warm. Well that was until I got up and got my 3/4 therma-rest for the top portion of my body. After that, I was a toasty little Hammock Rat and extremely happy.
I learned two things over the weekend about myself and hammock use. #1-I am going to be cold, and my hiking partner is going to tease me about it. I am just cold natured. I am not going out without my Big Agnes and my 3/4 Therma-Rest...then I will have a good night's sleep. #2 I need a small pillow in said hammock. I am going to have to come up with an idea.
So can someone give their opinion on tieouts and the best way to do it?

Ps. I loved it when everyone was asking about how far we needed to go to get a good campsite, and how many tent places we needed. they looked at me, and I was able to honetly say, "Doesn't matter to me, I'll find something easy." And I did. That was one of the best things all weekend. I wanted to say "Neener, Neener", but I restrained myself.

.
Stuff a stuff sack with left over clothes, that should be enough for a pillow.

I stuff my fleece or rain jacket into its own sleeve for a neck pillow.
Like everyone else, I put my extra clothes in a stuff sack for another pillow. This one goes between or under my knees.
neener! neener! (to my brother and his friend last time the three of us went out... it was great... same situation... i had my hammock, they had no place to set up a tent. kept asking ME where to go... and it was raining!)
tie outs... yes, they might work a bit better if level with the hammock, but if you hang a little lower, they'll work fine staked in the ground... just makes it harder to stand up in the morning... never noticed a real difference though.
bottom insulation... i'm one of the world's coldest sleepers... i use a blue foam pad in anything under 85* nighttime temps... heard good things about the JRB underquilt. thermarest is overkill though... try a blue foam pad before you carry the extra 2 lbs...
pillow... sewed a piece of fleece to the side of my sleeping bag stuff sack and use it with my rain gear or extra clothes inside. nice and soft.
