I'm thinking about buying a Byer Traveler hammock instead of using a tent. One of my major concerns of using the hammock are mosquitoes, since it doesn't have a bug net. Is there any way to ward off mosquitoes besides a bug net? I was thinking about bug spray or something, but I'd have to spray it on my face :/

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

Why wouldn't you get a Hennessy Hammock? They are the gold standard for hammocks and have a bug net. I personally use enough DEET during the day when I'm hiking that I don't think it's wise to start using it at night too. For the AT, an enclosed shelter is probably best.

byer also has the "mosquito hammock" if you want to go that way- check out just jeff's site:

hope this helps

Thanks for your help so far.

The reason why I want to buy the Byer Traveler is because it's only $16. I know it's not as good as others, but I wanted to get it as a starter to see if I like hammock camping.

that sounds like a wise descision. I have my own homemade speer type- also check out risk's test hammock at www.imrisk.com and http://www.imrisk.com/testhammock/testhammock.htm - I wouldn't take it backpacking, but it's a good first try.

the biggest difference, and I would say issue between the byer and others (like the speer) is the different ends. The byer has string at the ends, the speer has fabric all the way to the end. (both use some sort of rope/webbing to attach to trees) the string tangles.

a bug net is fairly easy to make, just a piece of noseeum (or similar) tied to the ends and draped over- you can even make pockets to put stuff in to wieght it- you weren't that concerned about mosquitos, so you probably won't be as "concerned" (that's the nice word) as some people on this forum :P

just remember the diagonal and how to keep warm, and you'll be fine.
