Thanks, Weary, my day is never complete without an insult from our elder statesman.
And you mention I "know nothing useful about the last century and a quarter of American history."
Does this mean it's OK for me to talk about events before 1880?
Honerstly, Weary, sometimes your posts don't make much sense. What's so special about 1880 anyway? All I seem to to remember is that James Garfield, a Republican, beat Winfield Scott Hancock, a hero General. But I really don't really remember that much about it, as it was a century and a quarter ago.
Perhaps Weary, who no doubt worked on this campaign, can tell us all about it.
....What's so special about 1880 anyway? ....
Nothing. I just wanted to go far enough back to be sure to include the two Roosevelts, Truman, Carter, Clinton and their opponents.
Sorry to confuse you. I tend to forget that some are easily confused.

Two insults is enough for one day, grumpy. You must be tired.
And one of those Roosevelts was a Republican, you know. I thought you HATED those guys.
Maybe it's YOU who's confused.
It's 8:30.
Go to bed.

....
Well, I don't pretend to be responsible for your confused thoughts. But I certainly never said I hated Republicans. I've just said they are different from Democrats and asked why you somehow didn't recognize this.

Didn't you know, Weary? If it's not white, it's black!
That's what too much newsprint will do to the brain.

Please spare me the political garbage and bashing.......this is a great website!! The differance between this site and another (which will remained unnamed) is that I can actually read about hiking and the AT without name calling....can't we all just get along and go hiking?

Sorry. Not if we want the trail as it exists to continue over the decades and centuries for our children, grandchildren and future generations forever.
The trail is unique. It's partly a result of visionary volunteers, partly government, and partly political debate and decisions.
I can understand why folks dislike political debate. But with the federal AT budget being slashed 45 percent starting in 2006, those few of us who recognize the important role of government and politics in the future of this unique experiment in volunteerism will continue to speak out.
An alternative, of course, is for all of us to dig deep in our pockets and leisure time and volunteer our money and hours to the trail.
I prefer the alternative. But I'm a realist. I beg and beg for the funds needed to keep the Maine trail wild. We have succeeded in temporarily protecting Mt. Abraham a mile from the trail and the southeast of slopes of Saddleback. But we have not raised the stewardship funds -- or the funds needed to ensure that our organization remains viable until the next opportunty to provide buffers for the trail arises.
There was applause at a weekend trail planning meeting when I announced that our big 2005 victory was that we had managed to pay off our $200,000 mortgage. But I wasn't elated. I knew how difficult the effort had been, and how much luck had been involved.
Polls and comments on White Blaze and elsewhere reveal great alleged "love" for the trail. But this love as revealed by the response to thousands of mailings to trail users and repeated reminders to thousands of internet trail "supporters," resulted in only 132 checks.
I would like to see the trail as a truly a volunteer effort, to see volunteers provide the several million dollars a year that the trail needs to continue and improve.
Sorry for the rant:

Please be generous. As Jack observed a couple of messages back, I'm getting tired.

MoBeach42: (sorry for the missing quote here), but in response to your comments on the organic corn farmer.
That is interesting perspective, often the best information is obtained from 'people on the ground'. I imagine the reason that most farmers use non-organic fertilizers is cost...(?) Do you think there would be enough fish heads etc. to go around if they were spread over millions of acres?
I did a 'very quick' search and indeed you are correct that corn is heavily fertilised. Note there is what is call 'carry over fertiliser' that helps the following years soy bean crop. Lots of interesting info / perspective at www.ers.usda.gov/Briefing/corn/2005baseline.htm
I saw a wealth of info on this page but I will have to check it out later myself.
Later on

I moved all that torture stuff to another thread: http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=11009
Please stick to the topic about politics and the impact on the trails here if you would be so kind.

Bridge to Nowhere in Alaska was pulled by the politician who sponsored it. It was a bad idea to begin with, so good ridance to it.

Actually, that's not quite accurate. Alaska will still receive the $223 million appropriation to spend on transportation needs - including the bridge if they like. The budget was not cut one thin dime relative to the "Bridge to Nowhere".
