View Full Version : Mooning the Cog Railway on Mt. Washington
[quote=Jack Tarlin;402935]Hey Rick B....I wouldn't have bothered responding to your ridiculous post, but in the interestes of accuracy, I've walked a lot more miles than you gave me credit for.
Sorry about that, Jack.
I am the first to admit when I have made a mistake. Of course you have walked something a bit north of 50% the number of AT miles that Warren Doyle has.
Please accept my appologies for the error.
Now that would have been extremely funny to see the look on some of the hikers faces when somone riding the Cog mooned them. I chuckle at that thought. LOL
Have a good one footslogger - PS I'll be up on Lafayette tomorrow for a day hike with my daughter. Her first trip above tree line (17 months old). Maybe we should stop over by the Cog and do a family moonin' of hikers :)
How 'bout THIS! :banana :D

Note to RickB:
Um, nope, you're still off by thousands of miles, pal. See, you really don't know that much about me or my hiking, tho you think you do, and you sure spend a lot of time talking about it.
But I'm glad to see you say you're good about admitting when you've made a mistake.
You must have lots of practice with admissions of this sort.
Fact is, Rick, you seem a lot more interested in comparing my mileage to Warren's than I am. As I said earlier (which you evidently chose to ignore), I don't even know my exact Trail mileage, as it's something I don't obsess about; don't keep daily track of, and certainly don't brag about or post in Trail registers or elsewhere, like some folks I could mention.
I have a good enough idea about my mileage to know that you're wrong with your recent posts and don't really know what you're talking about here, but fact is, Rick, I'm under the impression......silly me......that no one's really interested in this data and that nobody really cares much about my accumulated Trail mileage.
Nobody but YOU, evidently.
Find a new hobby, you're making yourself look silly.
Jack,
Are you the same guy who spent a good part of our one face-to-face conversation talking about how you didn't take credit for the AT miles you have done walking up and down the sidewalks of Hanover? And I had no comment on the matter. In fact, I don't recall getting a word in edge wise on your miles or any other topic. Still, It was fun to listen to you speak on about miles.
Geesh.
And who knows, with all those trips to the 5 Olde, maybe you are approaching Warren's 30,000 Miles on the AT.
RickB
Jack Tarlin
09-08-2007, 18:58
I remember our conversation quite well, Rick. As for what constituted "a good part of our conversation", well, we spoke for only a few minutes, so I don't know what you're in a dither about. And you got several words in edgewise; I remember you telling me about why you were in Hanover, and what you were doing for work, whether or not you were going to get out on the Trail soon, etc. So your quip about not getting any words in edgewise during our brief meeting is untrue, in addition to being sorta snotty.
As I've postulated several times now, Rick......either you read poorly or you read selectively, or you have a lousy memory. But let's try this one more time, maybe it'll get thru: I don't really know my exact Trail mileage.
Nor do I particularly care that I don't know.
It's not a matter that is important to me.
I've lost track of how many times you have commented on it, tho.
Why a subject that is of supreme indifference to me evidently means so much to YOU is a complete mystery. Do you have any reason at all to come to Whiteblaze other than to hector me on a subject that I really couldn't give a rat's ass about?
Instead of obsessing about my Trail mileage, Rick, why not knock down a few more of your own.
It wasn't me who was concerned about sidewalk mileage, Jack.
Jack Tarlin
09-08-2007, 19:22
No, Rick, you REALLY don't get it. It is, in fact, YOU who seems obsessed with the subject of my Trail mileage at the moment. In fact, we've now reached the point where I can't even remember how often you've posted on the subject.
But for what is hopefully the last time:
You seem awfully more interested in my Trail mileage than I am.
Why this is so escapes me.
I am sure there are hikers out there who are more knowledgable about their accumulated personal mileage.....and care more about the subject of their own mileage.....than I do. If memory serves, you might even know one of these people, Rick.
So why not go bother him for awhile.
But for me, it's getting kinda old.
Buh bye.
It's been a hot, muggy day in New England. Anyone care for a cold one? :D

Hey, Rick, tellya what. I'm on Allen St. right now. In an hour I'll be walking around 40 yards, then turning left on Main Street, heading up to Olde Nugget Alley.
If memory serves, I'll be walking on the Trail for just under a tenth of a mile, probably about 150 yards or so.
But if you're anxious about this, I'll count my steps and get back to you with a more accurate assessment tomorrow.
Wouldn't want you to lose any sleep over this pressing and vital news.

Oh, and since you asked how I feel about Warren Doyle, well, I'll tell you this. I don't like a lot of what he writes here, but at least he expresses himself fairly well. Lately, you've been a real idiot......on this thread, on the Larry Craig one, on the Fred Thompson one, you name it.
Switch meds or something, take a hike, maybe. But your recent fevered postings here don't do ya a whole lotta credit, unless your intent is to make people laugh.
Sorry about that, Jack.
I am the first to admit when I have made a mistake. Of course you have walked something a bit north of 50% the number of AT miles that Warren Doyle has.
http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/wb_style/misc/progress.gif Please accept my appologies for the error.
Again, it looks like I have egg on my face. My choice of the adverbial phrase "something a bit north of" was probably a poor choice. No offence intended.
Whether you have 55% of Warren's miles or 65%, is something that concerns me far less than you realize. You should be proud of them. Heck, I am proud of each mine, and I have far fewer. Of course, mine were SOBO, so there is really litte comparison.
But again, please accept my sincere appologies. I just don't keep that close track.
My comments were intended to simply add a bit of color to an otherwise dreary thread. That said, I have enjoyed going back to read the thread from the beginning. And I do tip my hat to you, Jack.
Your additional experience on the Trail has indeed lead you to the right way of thinking on Mooning the Cog. I salute you for that. Who knows what you will learn next?
Now, a serious question? If you walk to and from the 5 Olde on the same route, don't those miles cancel out? Its like going back for a lost pair of socks left hanging on nail at the shelter, right?
As long as you don't walk backwards it should be OK. I heard of some guy that wanted to walk the entire AT backwards, and for his first time no less, before he had any in the bank. Now there is a scoundrel. :)
Jack Tarlin
09-09-2007, 17:07
Thanks for the last post, Rick, truly.
But as to "cancelling out" miles, are miles slackpacked more than once also "cancelled" out?
If so, I might not be the only one with questionable mileage. :D
And as to my change of heart about the Cog, well people change as they get older, at least most people do. And there's nothing wrong with admitting a change of heart, even if it means owning up to previous poor judgment. There's no shame in admissions of this sort.
Pity some folks aren't capable of this but I think that's been covered elsewhere......

09-09-2007, 20:38
I thought the point of mooning the cog was getting a piece of coal thrown at you. Sort of a friendly exchange. Must have been wrong.
Folks must have stopped mooning and began exposing. There is a bit of difference.
You would think the fireman on that train would welcome the exchange after making the trip about a zillion times.
As this has been going on for a while you would also think the passengers would sort of expect it. Kinda like a faked indian attack or train robbery.
It has to be fairly common knowledge that some AT hikers will moon the train, for whatever reason, protest or fun.
Then again, I'm only,
Nearly Normal
It would appear to the casual observer that mooning should be constrained to those on this thread who could moon each other to let out all this aggression. Of course there many be an issue getting volunteers to judge the mooning contest or even agree to the rating system. All of you need to go take a hike or something... ;)

Fhart, I don't have a problem with Warren Doyle. He has opinions that I don't agree with, some of which I haven't really seen him state (FD made a good point earlier today by asking him what his current opinions are on some things). I think that the Warren/Jack feud is strange, although someone earlier sort of hit it precisely (Wolf, I think) by saying that Warren doesn't bash Jack, but just knows how to push his buttons. As soon as Warren says almost anything, Jack sort of goes off on his rant, which includes movies, uneaten food and a variety of things, and keeps it up. As to Warrens other vices (if any) or virtues (if any), actually, I don't have much idea.

It is entirely possible that Weasel is being honest about having not heard of WD before hearing about him here. While I may have heard of him before coming here, if I did it didn't stick in my memory. Granted, I have only turned my attention to the AT in the past four or five years, but I honestly don't think I'd ever heard of him before. I had also never heard of Baltimore Jack or LW or Sly or Tha Wookie. The only people I associated with the AT were Earl Shaffer, Granny Gatewood, Ray Jardine and Nimblewill Nomad.

The Weasel(to Warren who he doesn't know)-"You don't offer a single useful thing - here or anywhere - except petty little arguments, insults and nastiness. You haven't made suggestions for her, or, for that matter, anyone else other than being simply nasty. You're hijacking the thread, and that's one of your typical tricks here on Whiteblaze.
If your behavior here is typical of whatever kind of educator you are, I am not surprised you are paid little. Educators - good ones, at least, and I'm married to a special ed teacher, father to a high school teacher, and father-in-law to a college professor (and have represented several thousand teachers - yes, thousand - over the years) - don't act like you. They aren't snide, they aren't insulting, and they don't interfere with people trying to help others.
So take your sorry little bag of nastiness outside, will you?"

For those of you who don't know what this is all about, the Cog Railway is a nasty, loathsome, noisy, coal-spewing choo-choo train that has been hauling fat tourists up Mt. Washington for nearly a century. For more years than I can rememeber, thru-hikers have chosen to salute this unfortunate and ill-placed piece of modern technology by mooning the bejeezus out of it when they cross the train tracks just below the Washington summit. Not only does it make for truly memorable photographs, but where else will one have the golden opportunity to do this to 400 morbidly obese New York Yankee fans all at one blow? (And incidentally, for those of you who will no doubt be firing off angry comments re. the maturity, tastelessness, and downright incivility of the practice of Cog Moonage, be aware that the passengers simply LOVE it when this happens---far from being offended, they usually applaud).
It is expected that the members of the thru-hiking Class of 2003 will honor this venerable and worthy tradition when they reach New Hampshire, and I thank Ann for bringing it to their attention.
Hey Tater. Looks like your hero is encouraging unethical behavior here.

Good evening.
Its been a long time since I have made the top 10 in much of anything, so I wanted to take a moment to reflect.
This journey was begun some 4 years ago, and much remains to be said on the topic of mooning the Cog.
I must say that I am especially proud of my small role in helping JT see the light.
And I would be remiss if I didn't publicly thank LW for his stalwart vison and leadership, and TW for making me believe that I really am smarter than my on-line peers.
And now, the Honor Roll. Hats (pants?) off to us all!

I come to bury this thread, not to praise it.
The icknyness that is this thread lives long afer this thread is closed.
The good is found elsewhere on this site.
So let it be with Mooning Cogs on Mt. Washington with Minn Smith.

Ever get the feeling it's a thankless job? My feelings are if some don't like the way a thread's going to NOT click on it.

LOL, yeah ESC rules on one side of the sign and "Don't Moon the Cog" on the other side. They could have that company that makes all those ".1 miles" signs do up a bunch and get that quantity discount.

Ah, but who (specific person or persons) does Dixicritter's "you" refer to?
dixicritter's "you" refers to the general "you" as in "ain't nobody on this earth gonna catch me with my pants down mooning the cog".
Please refer to post #585... thank you. :p

I don't have that problem. Mine is smart. LW :D said so.
Was just reading Talkermans' Journal and it appears that the recent mooners that were ticketed were actually on the train platform when the mooning occurred! That might explain the tickets. Not a whole lot of common sense in use at the time, obviously.

Only minors should moon the cog so their record will be erased upon becoming legal adults. Adults should not risk the charges.

Oh, I always thought mooning was when you stood with your back facing someone and pulled your pants down so they can see your buttocks. I did not know that it involved getting naked. It is too cold on Mount Washington to take off all your clothes so I would definitely advise against it.
