Pretty sure it was 18 or 19. I needed them more to dry out than to rest. 2003 was a VERY wet year.

my first hike was about 20 (didn't make it)
second about 15
third about 10
fourth about 5
what does that say? i appreciate my time in the woods more than not?
I partied less each time?
I got smarter? dumber? more in tune with nature? ???
On other trails, i take even less days off. The AT is the party trail for sure. but i guess i'm just not into that as much anymore.
so, i didn't vote in the poll because i didn't know which year to use.
I took one, and that was because I arrived in Pearisburg after the PO closed on a Saturday. I was pissed.

between time off to hit the beach ('01 & '03), zeros at the finer swimming holes in ME & the greater new england area ('01 & '03), zeros at amc huts in '01, multi-day pink blazing at the doyle ('03), frat parties in hanover ('01), hurricane party in wind gap ('03), town suction everywhere ('01 & '03), biker rally ('03) near vernon, i can never leave harper's ferry easily, ever; gotta rest up at home when i hit the thornton gap, thanksgiving on the trail w/ multi-zero days to digest, 2 pints of peach moonshine was a multi-zero-causer ('01), multiple zeros in the woods for no good reason ('01 & '03).......
......yup, easily 60+, i'd say.

Out of 158 days, I took 9 zeroes. In NH, I hiked on a Thursday, flew out of Lebanon early Friday morning to Atlanta, drove back to Mississippi for a family reunion, drove back to Atlanta Sunday, flew back to NH on Monday, and actually got back on the Trail Monday evening for a couple miles. Quite a Weekend. The last zeroes I took.

out of 153 days we took 20 off!! we had a blast!!!:clap :welcome :sun
would have to go back and look but outta 90 days to do 750 miles i took 20 days off
I am doing the AT on the 40 year plan, so I take about 358 zeros per year. :p
wow,
this poll suggests that someone actually took over 60 zero days! That's 2 months! How many zero days can one take and still finish? Imean this is two months of no hiking during a rougly 6 month hiking season!
I am guessing that this person must have gotten injured?

After years of solitary hiking I decided to do a Nobo social hike, took 65 zeros and finished just under 6 months. What a great adventure and fun time. IMHO there is more than one way to enjoy the trail.:)
35 or 36 between springer and port clinton PA. that's not counting 106 miles of aqua blaze, in which i took a 0, blue blazed to the road and then yellow blazed some of that, or any 0's that i can't remember.

In the year 2000 I took around 120 days of no hiking out of 9 months and 1600 miles of AT hiked.

My Theory exactly!
My Start Date 4/16/00...2076 days total - 100 days hiked = 1976 zeros! and I'm half way to Maine, so I figure about that many more.....so only about 3952 zeros altogether by the time I finish. That so far has been just enough to get all the other stuff I needed to do done, including counting up the darn zeros!
