View Full Version : Sewing a sleeping bag under a hammock.
What would happen if you sewed a sleeping bag to the underside of a hammock? Would you get a problem with compression?

I wouldn't think so...if it was sewn losly i wouuldn't think so as long as it is on the outside of the hammock. I would want to sew a sleping bag to the hammock personly. I feel you would be better off sewing a small bundgy cord around the ends of the sleeping bag so it just sit on the hammock like an undercover.
I was just thinking it would be sealed better if it was sewn on. I've heard that if there is a small space between hammock and underquilt it will be inefficient.

Lay in it first, and have someone help you quilt it to the bottom. If you sew it on without laying in the hammock, it'll stretch and compress the bag.
Use qilting loops just like making a quilt - loop should be the loft of the bag or you'll get a gap between the bag and hammock.
With quilting loops, you can just clip a few loops (well, probably 15 or so) to remove the bag for summertime use.
My results with my underquilt have been that it performs best when attached only to the hammock support ropes and not to the sides of the hammock. I have adjustable shock cords around the perimeter and find that cinching these snug while leaving the sides unattached allows the quilt to wrap up around you much more than it does when attached to the hammock perimeter. The quilt has some room to move with you that way, too.
