View Full Version : What about Spot?
I don't have a dog, but it's something that will probably happen in the next year or so. I know dogs on trail is a contentious issue. Assuming that my dog is either well behaved (meaning he really is, not just that I act surprised every time he runs amok) or that I only take him out on the river where I'm always alone, what am I going to do with him when I'm in my hammock?
What do you guys do? Doggy hammocks? Pup tents?
assuming he's of average intelligence, and it's raining, he should lie right up under your hammock tarp... if you've got the stock HH tarp, you might consider getting a larger one, and lowering it on one side for him to lie under. i've heard of people using a small (4 x 6?) tarp and setting it up just for their dog, either on its own, or somehow attached to their tent's vestibule area.
The Solemates 11-01-2005, 16:12 mine either sleeps at my feet inside my tent, or i tie him around a tree at night. its his choice of which one he wants to do that night. id say 75% of the time he wants to sleep at my feet. but, he is a coonhound and tends to go chase after possums and squirrels at night if i dont tie him up the other 25% of the time.
my boxer will be sharing my tent :D
Just Jeff 11-01-2005, 16:27 ...or i tie him around a tree at night.
What if the tree is too big to fit his little paws around?
That's what I'd be scared of. I wouldn't be able to keep such a good eye on him. I'd be tucked away in my Hennessy and he might go tearing off after something. I guess tying him up would be a good idea so at least he couldn't run off and get hurt. I'd still probably feel bad, though. I'd be tucked in reading and listening to my MP3 player and he'd be out there on his own, cursing me.
Hahaha, you could go the other way and tie his tail to his collar.
Isn't a dog going to mess up your tent floor?
not if I wipe her feet and keep her nails trimmed. :)

you had me rolling with laughter...good one!:jump
Two Speed 11-01-2005, 18:14 my boxer will be sharing my tent :DOnly way to do things IMHO. My mutt's a big part of my life and I view it as my responsibility to make sure he's warm and dry, just like I like to be. The only way I know to do that is to have him in the same shelter with me.
. . . I'd still probably feel bad, though. I'd be tucked in reading and listening to my MP3 player and he'd be out there on his own, cursing me.I'm gonna vote against this scenario. If you're not in the shelter with your dog and you can't hear what he's up to how do you know he's O.K., not hassling another hiker or hasn't found a skunk to play with?
Isn't a dog going to mess up your tent floor?Hasn't been a problem for me and I use a pretty lightweight shelter. Like CynJ said, keep up with his claws and wipe him down if he's sloppy and it'll be O.K. Heck, the average hiker ain't all that clean.
Hahaha, you could go the other way and tie his tail to his collar.Yeah, that way he can get a little extra exercise running around the tree.:jump
Besides the dog is a walking space heater! lol....and she LOVES to cuddle at night, but is a blanket hog:sun
tiamalle 11-02-2005, 00:23 not if I wipe her feet and keep her nails trimmed. :)
Happy Birthday CYN-J
thanks tiamalle!! I'm getting old lol....this year's not so bad only 34 - next year will be DEPRESSING! lol.....
LIhikers 11-02-2005, 08:02 34 is old??????? lololololololol I was 34 once, I had a really good year. At least that's what people tell me, I can't remember that long ago :D
Happy birthday :banana

No, you misunderstood: he is one of those new (rare?) "Rope dogs" very thin long & flexable. Get to camp at night, "here spot" and tie just like a length of cord to a nearby tree. In a pinch, they also double as a clothes line :D
Just Jeff 11-02-2005, 09:37 Oh - so if you're hammocking, just use him for the hammock support and he'll be mostly under the tarp anyway.
Guess you wouldn't want to use him for bearbagging, though...

This is pretty much why I didn't go with a hammock on my hike. I also cut down my shelter weight by going with Integral Design's SilShelter and a tyvek groundcloth. Fortunately, I lucked out and my dog is well-behaved enough that I didn't need to tie her up at night.

I always hike with my dog - I think she'd run away if I left the house with a pack and without her....
I 'always' hammock.
I also always have my dog on-lead or tied out.... I use a 16' flexi-lead, which gives her plenty of freedom to range out ahead of me hiking, and when she's tied up at night.
At night, I tie her to a limb hanging from one of the trees I hang my hammock from. I try to tie her out in a way that she can't get wrapped around the tree or my tie-outs.
