i manufacture the AGG 1 under the Black Snake Designs label that's 4 oz. it's good for about 15 -18 pounds, comfortably.

The Wisp is way over at 1 lb 8 oz. The Virga at 1 lb 3 oz is more like it. But I digress, sub-pound is what I'm interested in.
Also Six Moon Designs Essence Pack (http://www.sixmoondesigns.com/shop/shopexd.asp?id=44), 13 ounces and intro priced at $90. shipping soon.

ron, but does one size really fit all? i find that, for instance, granite gear packs (such as the vapor trail) are supposed to fit up to 21-22 inch torso lengths as well. having an outfitter measure my torso puts me in this range, but putting on the pack puts the waistbelt uncomfortably too high for my 6'4" frame.

Very good question. And the only way to answer it would be to send you (6'4") and me (5'9") a pack each (free of course) to answer that question. :banana
No I don't expect the pack to fit all. I would expect it maybe too short for you, especially if you're pushing the weight. At pack weight of 15 to 18 pounds or less, the effectiveness of waist belts diminish.
I’ll be looking at different sizes in the future. Since this pack has such a unique mixture of features, we wanted to get it out. Plus it’ll take some time for me to work out what sizes to create and how they might affect functioning of the pack.
I’ll have the pack at the Southern Ruck next week so if you’re there you can check it out.

I emailed Ron Bell for photos and he didn't have any. He said the Prophet 20 is pretty much a smaller, lighter version of the Prophet 30 without the pockets. The Prophet 40 is still a prototype.

No I don't expect the pack to fit all. Interesting pack.
A few questions:
Is the torso length adjustable like the Comet's? Its hard to tell from the dark photo.
Where exactly is the extension collar? I assume the top lid does NOT float, correct?
There are straps on the inside that hold the pad in place, correct? But you can't access the pad without removing the pack's contents, correct? You are able to accomplish this because the pack is a panel loader which gives you full access to the backside of the back of the pack, correct?
How do you access the top lid? Is there a velcro flap somewhere? Can't tell from the dark photo.
Are the hip belt pockets zippered?
Explain how the main compartment is closed. I don't "get" this draw string thing. I assume the 5 buckles on the front side must have something to do with it.
Is the weather flap shown in the photo?Looks like a great idea. Panel loading does make far more sense on a smaller pack.
A few questions:
1) Is the torso length adjustable like the Comet's? Its hard to tell from the dark photo.
No - The shoulder straps are fixed position to reduce weight.
2) Where exactly is the extension collar? I assume the top lid does NOT float, correct?
The extension collar extends out the front of the pack under the weather flap. (See discussion below.) The top pocket does not float. This eliminates the weight of all the extra material and structure needed to support a floating lid. It provides all the function of the lid without the weight. The fixed top pocket also assist to constrain the pad. This addes to the rigidity of the pack and more effective load transfer.
3) There are straps on the inside that hold the pad in place, correct? But you can't access the pad without removing the pack's contents, correct? You are able to accomplish this because the pack is a panel loader which gives you full access to the backside of the back of the pack, correct?
Yes there are straps within the pack to contain the pad and you do need to remove the contents to get to the pad. Since the pack is a panel loader, it's pretty easy to insert and remove the pad.
4) How do you access the top lid? Is there a velcro flap somewhere? Can't tell from the dark photo.
The top pocket is zippered and is accessed from behind your head. This simular to most top lids. (Hope to have professional photos sometime in the near future.)
5) Are the hip belt pockets zippered?
Yes
6) Explain how the main compartment is closed. I don't "get" this draw string thing. I assume the 5 buckles on the front side must have something to do with it.
The light colored material in the photo is the extension collar under the Weather Flap. It has a drawstring closure. It's simular to the opening of a most pack, only it's larger to provide access to the full interior of the pack. It's folds under the Weather Flap.
7) Is the weather flap shown in the photo?
The Weather Flap is the piece of material on the back with the criss crossing compression cord and 5 buckles. The weather flap performs several functions.
a) It keeps rain out of the pack.
b) Its 5 buckles secure it to the pack and keeps the contents of the pack constrained.
c) It can be expanded so you quickly store your warm up jacket in a secure dry place without opening the pack.
d) Its compression cord helps reduce pack size to accomidate different load sizes or can be used to attach additional gear.

I get it now. The drawstring clouser is not shown as it is under the black "weather flap". So, if I were to unbuckle the 5 buckles and lift the weather flap, I would see the typical "circular" drawstring clouser, extra material (aka extension collar) and the excess cord (that makes up the drawstring), correct?
Excellent idea. So, the compressiong cord on the weather flap has a dual purpose. It can be used as an external "pocket" or drying rack of sorts, as well as providing stability to excess gear behind the flap both inside the pack (IOW, the "extension collar") and outside the pack (your "keep my jacket dry but available" example above).
It will be interesting to see if this catches on. It definately seems to "solve" some of the minor "day in the life" issues associated with using your typical top loader. And, more importantly, is able to provide a more rigid frame because you have direct access to the straps which will secure the pad to the pack's back side. Both of those "problems" are all too common with the typical toploader rucksack style of UL pack.
Seems like you could "do away" with the weather flap and just roll-up the drawstring closure (like most folks do with top loading drawstring packs) under some sort of compression strap, or latching, system on the front. That would keep the water out, allow you to hold gear (though not "dry") and possibly get rid of those 5 buckles. Maybe have 2 (bottom corners???) or three (one on each side and one at the bottom) instead. Of course, this setup may not provide as much stability if larger loads are in the "extension collar" as your setup.
I just might have to get me one of these. Let's see if it would fit the way I like my packs to fit. What is the distance between the shoulderstrap attachment point and the centerline of the hipbelt?
vipahman
01-06-2006, 17:32
While front loading is convenient, IMHO it's not a big deal in the UL world. And that's because we ULers have whittled down everything to the bare minimum. If you compare it to a Vapor Trail which has just one big compartment, you might beg for it. But most backpacks offer some outside/pocket storage that takes care of instant access needs.
My Golite Jam (21 oz), from the bottom up, has a sleeping bag, tent, kitchen sack, hygiene+emergency sack, clothes. Food for the current day is in the pocket. Water is via a hydration pipe. I don't have to dig deep. Everything fits in under 1800 ci.
So what's the fuss about.
Ron,
While the Essence is a great idea, lose that weather flap + 5 buckles, saving 2 oz (?) at least. And that should lower the cost too.

18 inches.
>> Seems like you could "do away" with the weather flap and just roll-up the drawstring closure <<
We started out that way, but found the Weather Flap became a structural element that helps to keep the pack from drooping when loaded. All other panel loaders use zippers and the zipper plus a possible compression straps take up the load. They also use a flat fairly stiff material for their closure that has little give and no expansion.

So what's the fuss about. Little things. I, too, don't have too much of a problem with the top loader setup, but all too often I find myself digging inside the pack for some thing mid day. Which means I need to remove stuff on top (food, cookware, shelter, etc.).
Ex. Gloves, hat, insulating jacket (fleece or whatever), rain jacket. All of those items I want to be "accessible", but where to put them?
Typically I load my pack with sleeping bag and clothing bag on the bottom, food, stove/pot, first aid, bag-o-everything, rain gear, shelter, etc. next (my pad is typically on the outside for easy access on breaks). Which means I have to remove a few items to reach my warm jacket on break. Or dig out my gloves, etc.
Sure, some of this stuff can go in outside pockets. But it seems by the end of the trip I have 80% of stuff outside the pack, which is a bit odd. Again, its not a big deal, but it could be nicer. It also could be that I need to hike more to become comfortable with a particular system. I also think a few things could be "better" on my current solo pack (Salomon Raid 300).
shame on me for not checking back.
The Black Snake Designs AGG 1 is around 1200ci and is $45 at the moment. i think i'm gonna add a beaver tail which will take it up to about 6oz and $55.

True, but you better hurry if you want a new Golite Breeze... Golite has now sold out their remaining stock, Golite's preferred dealers have sold out their remaining stock, and the few dealers that still have some in stock probably won't have it for long.

It has a main body and a smallish non-removable lid that holds maybe 200 cubes. No waistbelt but does have a sternum strap. The above might be about accurate for the pack though the main body probably has a bit less than 1000 cubes due to the lid.

Now that this list has evolved substantially, I'd like to whittle down the list using my subjective parameters based on 2-4 day hikes on the AT with a sub-4 lb core weight.
1. Reject overpriced packs. (cost > $150)
2. Reject small packs. (max weight < 15 lbs or total vol < 1500 ci)
3. Reject kits. ('cos I don't know to sew)
4. Reject heavy high volume packs. (weight > 12 oz and total vol > 2500 ci)
5. Reject pack without a waistbelt. ('cos a pound of your shoulder is worth it)

P.S. I've modified the weights on the MLD bags to add waist belts but didn't do it in the original list because that makes a good reference.

Good job vipahman. I've been looking at this catagory for a while now. I ordered an Essence at the $90 sale price. If it's anywhere near as comfortable as my Vapor Trail I'll be happy.
Thanks. It has turned out to be an interesting bit of research. Let us know how you like the Essence, though honestly in that weight class I'd be happier buyer with the Dawn. What's your core and total weight requirement?
black snake designs AGG 1 has a removeable waist strap with clip. strap not belt. its only 3/4 of an inch wide.

I think you've ignored comfort, purpose, and performance to a great extent. But you have your own priorities--I'm just indicating that mine are probably not the same.
Choosing from that latest list, I'd go with the Mariposa for high-volume needs [cold, extended trips, or water loads], the Dawn or Essence for general purpose ULing, and the Prophet 20 or 30 for low-volume needs [overnighters, running/high-mileage].
On the upside, most of them are very solid choices!

What's your core and total weight requirement?
I usually carry about 20 lbs not counting food or water. Top out at just over 30 with food and water for 5-6 days out. I try to go as light as I can and then add back luxury items like camera, book, binoculars and food for my dog. I also usually take a Jetboil.
I've not considered the Dawn before, but will give it a look too. The Mariposa looks interesting to me as well because word is it can carry somewhat heavier loads comfortably.
I'll report back on the Essence.

Actually comfort and performance are high priority. And the purpose is SUL for 2-4 days. Also, the Prophet 20 and Essence are too new to claim either comfort or performance. Give them a few months and they will probably shine in their categories. Also durability is important. While I don't throw my pack around, I don't want it collapsing under it's own weight either. Would the packs I listed: Thompson Peak, G5 and Prophet 30 be considered durable. I know the G5 ships without warranty.

Yep, don't leave out the Golite Dawn. It is an awesome pack in my opinion and could be made to be under its current weight. You also don't have to use the volume but it's nice to have when you do need it.

The Frantic Finge Thompson Peak you have listed is not completely accurate. The $69, 9.5oz version does not have a hipbelt. For $10 and 1oz you can add the hipbelt. I suppose you could list it in both forms on your list.

I assume you are looking at sub-pound packs that have a large enough capacity to thru-hike in? Though it is slightly over 1lb. (20 oz), the ULA Conduit seems like a great pack holding 3200 ci. I'll find out in another few weeks.

I'll add it as a note. The MLD packs also have optional waistbelts.

The list did start out as sub-pound packs large enough for thru' hiking but then expanded to include all sub-pound packs. The Conduit is 1 1/4 lbs.
