We are looking for ideas and suggestions for making your own bear proof food container for our upcoming hike. Any suggestions.
I don't think there's anything you can make at home that would stop a bear. Even the canister and ursasack manufactuers have had flaws that needed to be re-worked.
Take heart, using basic techniques, the chances of a bear getting your food on the AT are slim, and if they do it's normally only another day to a road.
99% of the time I sleep with my food, as do most thru-hikers. If you're leery, try the "PCT method" of hanging. It worked great in the rare instances I used it out West.

I know I could not afford the weight of any bear-proof food container in my pack. I hang it high and pray breakfast will still be there in the morning!

First, along the AT, you don't need a bear proof container. When in bear country, use the existing bear lines or bear boxes. Elsewhere, just hang your food.
Second, if you are in a place like the High Peaks of the Adirondacks that requires bear canisters, I believe that they only allow certain approved manufactured canisters. No home made containers. So, if you are going there, then either rent or buy one.

:D Thanks - we're still learning every day...we definately won't carry ANYTHING we don't need...sound like bear bag on AT is over-kill.
