How do you store the hammock web or rope that you use to tie up the hammock? Do you think a small pouch or stuff sack sewed to the end of the snakeskin would be a good idea?

I am making a Risk Zhammock and WarmPod, and was thinking about hammock storage by looping it and just carrying it over the shoulder rather than putting it into a pack. I wonder if you could leave the sleeping bag/quilt inside the hammock and use oversize snakeskins to cover it. Maybe even putting pouches in the WarmPod and carrying some stuff like longjohns in the hammock bundle as well.

Sounds like a great experiment! Let us know how it turns out.

I usually just fold the skinned hammock a few times, then wrap the rope around the bundle. Keeps it nice and tight and organized. No reason a pouch in the skins wouldn't work, though.

One challenge you might find if you leave the top quilt in the skins...
Sliding the skins down will tend to push the quilt to the middle, so you'll have a big bulge there. An underquilt is attached to the hammock so it stays roughly in position (though if you're not careful it'll stretch the shockcord...no big deal there). Maybe add some clips at the ends to hold it in place or something.

Pouches for sleeping gear in the Pod sounds interesting, too. As long as it's not heavy enough to weigh it down and make it sag...but then you'll be taking the heavy stuff out to wear it when the Pod is occupied, so it should work. Should be really convenient to have pockets like that for nighttime use, too. Hrm...might have to get my sewing machine out!

Be sure to post pics!

i do like jeff, and just wrap the ropes around the "skinned" hammock. i did make some little pouches for the tarp tie outs... just a small triangle of silnylon sewn in the two corners, about 3-4'' across, with a piece of velcro sewn to the middle of the top edge to hold it shut.
