who the hell hates kids, let alone their OWN kids?"
People that are shorter than them??
Hikers with pictures of their grandchildren. I...don't...care!! I barely tolerated my own kids when they were little. I don't give a flying damn about yours or your grandchildren. Period. Ever.
I wish you hadn't said that. Kids and dogs are the most wonderful of God's creations. We just returned from visiting our 5 month grandson who lives 5 hours away. I can't wait till he can hit the trail with me. Tommorrow I will visit my other grandson who is 1.3 years old. He will be on the trail with me some day too. I feel really sorry for people who can't tolerate their kids or any kids for that matter. Some day that person will be old and will wonder why their kids don't visit them. You may eat your words.

People who hate their kids and grandkids die a lonesome, heartless death usually. Usually in some nursing home and a county paid funeral. I've seen it more times than I wish to remember.
Wow....where to begin?
In no particular order, here are a few things that would drive me nuts if I let 'em:
*Horrible trail musicians who assume everyone wants to hear them play
or sing at the end of the day
*Moochers, esp. smokers who refuse to purchase their own
*Folks who were too lazy or stupid to train their dogs properly before
the trip
*Innapropriate use of cell phones while in the woods
*People who ask overly personal questions when they've just met you,
esp. regarding one's religion, politics, income/profession, etc.
*Newbies that think they know it all after 20 miles
*Veterans that think THEY know it all after several thousand.
*Shelter hogs, the ones who spread all their stuff over three spaces and
act like they're doing you a HUGE favor when they move it
*Lightweight hikers who think they're entitled to a guaranteed spot in a
shelter because they don't have a tent or tarp
*Extreme gearheads who talk about equipment ad nauseum
*Whiners, particularly those who insist on providing daily updates on their
physical and medical afflictions
*People who are positive that you're interested in their bodily functions
*Couples that bicker in front of other hikers
*Couples that are too affectionate in front of other hikers
*New York Yankee fans
*People, usally younger males, that write filthy, nasty stuff in Trail registers
*People that trash talk other hikers in registers thinking it won't get back to
the people they're maligning
*People that bitch about Trail conditions and maintenance tho they've never
done any themselves
*Old timey hikers who constantly talk about how much better the Trail used
to be, and how much harder it was
*Hikers who assume that nobody cares if they're naked without realizing
how horrible they actually look when naked.
*Hikers who mooch water off you because they were too stupid or too
into the "lightweight" thing to carry enough of their own
*People who hog telephones in tiny little trail towns where there's only one
or two phones in the whole village.
*People who think that the fact that they are keeping an Internet journal
somehow entitles them to unlimited time on hostel and library computers
*People who borrow stuff and don't return it or pay you back
*People who borrow stuff and don't return it clean or in good condition
*People who borrow stuff
*People who don't tip in Trailtown restaurants
*People who are greedy about Trail Magic and take more than their share
*Hikers who get the "Trail God" mentality, and think that since they are hiking
for six months, everyone should treat them with awe, never mind give them
all sorts of stuff for free
*People who bitch about paying an overnight fee in extremely highly used
sites in Vermont......and then are buying six dollar beers in a pub two days
later
*People who are know-it-alls or are rude to the staff in Trail Outfitters,
especially when they've been on the trail all of three weeks
*Trail gossips and busybodies
*People who are obsessed with what other people are doing, and bitch about
them in registers, especially as regards whether they've slackpacked,
missed a section, etc.
*People who try to impress you with how fast they covered a section, or
how many miles they achieved that day
*People who talk about how easy a section was when it just beat the s***
out of you
*People with cute trail partners and are overly smug about it
*Cranky, grumpy, older hikers who should have hiked years earlier
*Spoiled, whiny, youger ones who need to wait a few years before hiking
*Phony intellectuals, who try to impress others with their erudition, choice of
reading matter, etc. Clue to someone being a jerk: If their trail name is
that of a Great Western Philosopher, especially from classical Greece, they
are usually insufferable.
*People that won't clean themselves up, even in a hostel or town
*People who wanna share your motel room but don't wanna pay their full
share
*People who never buy a round, but will happily let you pay for theirs
*Motel roomates who are NASCAR fans
*People who cheat hostel owners
*People who make messes in hostels and assume the proprietor will clean it
up; likewise people who won't help with household chores, even when it's
expected
*People who won't chip in on gas for a shuttle, even when they see others
doing so
*People who, when they find you pitched on a beautiful camping spot,
instantly assume that you want them to join you there and that you
welcome their company
*People hiking in the opposite direction of you, who are NEVER capable of
providing accurate info on such things as water availablity, campsites,
distance, etc., even tho they've just covered the section you're asking
them about
*People you meet as you start up a monster climb, who have just come down
it, and insist on gleefully telling you what a horrible uphill awaits you
*Likewise, hikers who go tear-assing up a really steep hill at three and a half
miles an hour, while you're sitting on a rock hawking up lung gobbets and
dying of exhaustion
*Hacky sackers. Don't ask me why, they just annoy me
*Early, early risers in shelters. Or people who come in at eleven o'clock
*Trail dogs that snap at people
*Trail dogs that get all over your stuff when they're sopping wet or filthy
*Trail dogs that knock you down on the Trail or jump on you
*Trail dogs that bark
*Trail dogs that chase wildlife
*Trail dogs that crap in campsites
*Trail dogs that are pest bastards in hostels
*Trail dogs
*Southbounders who cop attitudes, even when at the time you meet them,
they've done 400 miles, and you're past 1700
*Southbounders who insist on expounding why their trip is tougher, better,
etc.
*Southbounders in general
Hmmm, all for now.
One last pet peeve: People who complain too much or have too many pet peeves.
Kinda like the guy who wrote the above!!
People who reply by quoting something really long. That, and people who get upset about little things just pi$$ me off to no freakin' end. Man they drive me up a wall. I bet their kids would pi$$ me off, too.

PEOPLE!!! But I like dogs and kids are OK
Unsolicited advice drives me bananas. I try to leave others alone and would like them to do the same. I do believe that for tranquilities sake, equipment should be added to religion and politics as subjects not talked about during such gentile occasions as walking up a mountain or enjoying a sunset.
Gentile occasions? I think Jewish people can appreciate them too.;)
hikers that do their dish's in the water sourceor brush thier teeth in the water source, that piss's me off to no end:cool: neo
Er....that's dishes. The dish doesn't own anything. Other than that, I agree, but I wouldn't blow a gasket, most people who do such things do so in ignorance and need to be instructed, not necessarily criticized.
Someone mentioned New York Yankee fans......and I'd have to concur.
Go Red Sox!
Hikers with pictures of their grandchildren. I...don't...care!! I barely tolerated my own kids when they were little. I don't give a flying damn about yours or your grandchildren. Period. Ever.
At first, I was appalled by this statement....
But now, I hope I get to meet you someday, with my two daughters, cause they would change your mind. KIDS ROCK!!!
As an aside, the kids that are hard to be tolerated are usually the ones that weren't raised well.

Pictures of people's kids is another great example where the old adage "Honesty is the best policy" just doesn't work. In those cases (and most others really), it should be "Tact is the best policy".
I have had people pull out pictures of things that only vaguely looked human and was asked, "Aren't they adorable?". Now all I do when I get handed a picture is study it for a second, nod, smile, then hand it back and move on. Happened all the time with guys I knew in Kuwait/Iraq, both with children and wives/girlfriends.
I don't have kids. I don't want kids. I haven't wanted kids for as long as I can remember. That also means that unless you are paying me, I don't want to watch your kids, talk to your kids, play with your kids, or any of the other things that people who have kids do with them...it's why I don't have them and also, why I don't want them.
If I miss out on what you consider the most amazing thing in the world, that's up to me isn't it? People who say "Well, if you had kids, you'd understand.", or the ones who say "I can't understand why you don't want kids, mine are my entire world and they are the best things in the universe.", annoy me to death, because honestly, how do you know how I'd feel about it? I could hate my kids as much as I think I would now and be a terrible parent. Isn't it more responsible to go with my gut instinct here and decide not to have children as opposed to having a child despite my misgivings only to be a terrible father and ruin another human beings life?
Funny that most people talk so much about the HYOH philosophy around here, then jump on someone who is different from you in another aspect of life besides hiking. HYOH applies to everything, at least in my opinion.

I think it's good you know that you dont want kids or like them much, and that you are choosing to not have them b/c of that.
I dont think people were jumping on the fact that someone said they dont like kids, I think it's more on the fact that person stated they barely tolerated their own kids, which is (in my opinion) totally different than knowing you dont like kids and not having them. To basically say you dont like your own kids (and possibly your own grandkids) is a pretty bold statement.

Well, we can split hairs here. At least one person said...

I feel really sorry for people who can't tolerate their kids or any kids for that matter. Some day that person will be old and will wonder why their kids don't visit them. You may eat your words.
Both of them applied the "If you hate kids, you're wrong and don't know what you are talking about." approach.

just like you may not see why people like kids, others dont see why people dont like them. However, like i said above, i think the main reason for the responses were due to the fact she stated she couldnt tolerate her own.
what strikes me kinda odd is people not liking something they once were....

I think her statment was a "tonge in cheek" type of responce, I raised 10 kids and often would remark that I had left them at a rest area and some one would always return them. People knew I was joking but once a woman threatened to have me arrested for child abandonment. I ofered to give her all 10 but she refused.LOL Oh did I say "I hate kids" ????

People that show off photos of their pets and cars. While taking a break at a trailside shelter this real PITA hiker that I was trying to duck says something like It only took me X hours to hike here from the last shelter. My response: Hurry up, there giving out trophies at the next one.

That's not the sentiment I got from reading her post. I think she was serious.
All I can think is that she must not have many friends. If she does, they are probably all childless.
Imagine this, you love your kids and grandkids so much and are so proud to be their grandma or grandpa that you enjoy talking about them and showing off their pictures.
Then your "friend" tells you that she doesn't want to hear any more about your kids or grandkids or see any more pictures of them. How long will she stay your friend?

I love my children dearly. I do not have affection for others kids. I also have plenty of friends, most with children, and all of them know I have little patience with little kids. And none of them have denied me their friendship over it. I simply cannot get all gooey over other people's kids and grandkids. That I'm a female with the guts to admit that is what really bothers you. I don't "hate children" - I simply don't love everyone else's. I don't whip out photos of my kids everywhere I go. If someone asks I'll be happy to show them pics. Otherwise I don't presume on their interest.

Yes you could tell from the flow of the thread Mrs. Baggins was a little tongue and cheek. That's the problem with writing in threads and without the non verbal communication.
I must say when I'm at shelters and places with hikers, I am not a good listener. I'm visual, not auditory. So if someone sits there and tells me their life story at the picnic table, I am liable to forget everything a minute later, if not sooner. And then when I ask a question, they'll say - but I already told you that. :o

The Place should be closed if it is enabling bad behavior and allowing hikers to think that freeloading and rule breaking is OK on the trail. If it was closed, Lone Wolf would be less annoyed.
One of my favorite bumper stickers is " My child beat up your honor student"
One of mine is this: "My child has perfect attendance at Huntsville TDC"
You sort of have to know that TDC is Texas Department of Corrections...and Huntsville is where death row is....
It might be best not to use real names or real trail names but try to describe the most annoying fellow hiker you ever met on a long distance hike.I'll bet I could make the list for sure.
Hiking solo is not entirely a personal choice of mine. lol
For me, it's got to be the people who have ipods and insist on using a speaker instead of the ear buds.
I really don't want to hear your music. I honestly don't. Seriously. I don't care if this song is incredible. I don't want to hear your music. No, I'm not kidding. Turn it off or put on headphones. Because it's rude and inconsiderate that's why. We go to the mountains to get away from crap like this. I don't want to hear it.

Yes, cats are high on my list also. We've had some good ones. My sister had a beautiful Siamese cat named Cleopatra that liked her and only her. She left claws in my hands more than once. Never could figure that out. I had to admire her at a distance.

especially when they've been on the trail all of three weeks

*People who never buy a round, but will happily let you pay for theirs
*Motel roomates who are NASCAR fans
*People who cheat hostel owners
*People who make messes in hostels and assume the proprietor will clean it
up; likewise people who won't help with household chores, even when it's
expected
*People who won't chip in on gas for a shuttle, even when they see others

And before you call me a pansy pacifist, I'm not. I got in plenty of fights growing-up. I have no respect for people too timid to defend themselves. But I never considered the ability to do so bumper-sticker material.

"You better not do this...., Get away from me with this......, Here is what annoys me on the trail.....," WOW, alot of bitchin! If the actions of others bothers you so much, what the hell are you doin on the AT? Yes I am complaining about the complainers. Bunch of friggin crybabies!!!!

What annoys me? Loud mouthed Red Sox fans. They win two world championships in 90 years, and suddenly they think it's OK to say a team that is 13 times more successful than the Red Sox "sucks." That's called projection. :D
So, what's the Yank's payroll up to this year? A billion dollars?
When you spend nearly twice as much and still can't put the sox away, you suck.

Great post.
I am doing a section hike in a few day and was just thinking about my mental game to ensure a good time on the trail. I am also strongly considering taking my tent with me after reading Jacks post. This is against my light weight system, but taking it will free me from having to stay at shelters.
My Quick list (for myself) to have a good time on the trail
The first is to accept the weather and the trail (hills, conditions etc) and go with it.
The second is to get over my fear of bears (have seen three with out incident).
The third is to try and be present on the trail and not dwell on my past, home life and my future plans (or horniness)
The Fourth part is to try not annoy people or to get annoyed.
That means keeping certain topics off the table like Religion, politics, the economy, diet philosophy (vegan etc), pack weight and gear
Religion is a big one because every time I hike someone wants to convert me. In fact I spent the entire bus ride from Philly, Pa to springer and then the hike up to the summit the next day, being peached too by this "nice minister." After all that, there was No Sale. I am still what I am.
Quick list of annoying hikers:
1) Missionary on a mission to convert me (like the messiah will show up right then and there if I converted)
2) Tag-a-long people (strangers) who "partner" up with you then start complaining that you are hiking too fast too slow...that take days off when you do and no long mile or short mile days can't shake them. And who then give you a sad puppy dog look like you just broke up with them when you demand your independence
3) Gay guys who strip naked and stand over you with there penis dangling out right next to you at camp and ask you if you would check there body for ticks (as a come on or to test if you are gay and interested) (happened once). I am not gay and have nothing against homosexuals. Just think there is a major boundary issue there.
4) trash talking hikers who say they are going to do the "triple crown" AT, PCT, CDT, but end up quitting a week after their trash talk (these are the same guys who laugh at how little miles I did that day)
5) Hiker who complain and debate about why they are hiking and if they are having a good time every minute they are on the trail and who seem to want me to convince them to stay. (shut up and hike already!!!!)
6) heavy pack weight newbie hikers who try to unload there ****ty tasting gorp and heavy food on you like they are doing you a favor
7) People who burn there plastic or litter
8) Any large camp, scout, or kids groups that takes up the whole shelter (and then does not share any of their smores)...Little Bastards (lol)
9) People who obsess about gear and equipment, who spend there free thoughts thinking of gear invention then hype these ideas to you. "It is gonna be a rain coat, back pack, tent, camp stove, shower, 100 piece swiss army knife and pizza oven all in one, dude! It will revolutionize hiking."
10) People who complain about the condition of the trail and who dis on the clubs and volunteers who maintain it. (be grateful there is a trail dude)

A lot of the same memories are being repressed by Yankees fans over the last decade of debacles. Only reason they made it to the series and lost in 03 was because Aaron Boone....1 for 17 in the 7 game ALCS hit a walk off homer in the bottom of the ninth.

Please.
Yankee fans talk ad nauseum about years gone by because it's simply too painful and uncomfortable to even mention more recent events, including, of course, the single greatest choke in the history of American professional sports.
And incidentally, the Red Sox went 86 years without winning a World Series, not 88 as Mowgli reported.

just out of respect!whats west point got to do with fighting?:-?ky
you know, after I posted this, I thought that what I should have said is "and my honor student, now a West Point cadet, COULD kick your child's....but wouldn't unless he really had to- he'd walk away, because that's the kind of kid he is... (and he'd also kick my a$$ if he knew I was bragging about him on the internet!)
chuckle...."what's West Point got to do with fighting?"
ok - you asked!
Before you can even start school, you report to West Point for an 8 week program called Cadet Basic Training, or "Beast Barracks." Young men and women learn how to be in the military, and begin training in various military skills and tactics...note 2:49 in the short video about 2004 Beast:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xLEm1FTpKsc
...then as freshmen, all males take 1/2 semester of boxing (one of the phone calls I got last fall was about getting all bloody at boxing class that day - and it wasn't his blood!), (females take another class on self-defense - forget what it is) then "military movement" - and that's not a class on how to move a patrol around....
While getting one of the best educations in the nation (forbes.com ranked West Point the 6th best college in the nation last year - and the top public school), West Point cadets are trained to be "war fighters."
nah - nothing to do with fighting! :D
Well, they try hard to ward off the butt-whooping they get from Navy football every December! :banana
oh, come on Bearpaw - "every December?" yeah, recently maybe -record is 53 (Navy) - 49 (Army), right? it may take them a year or two - but they're on the way back!
oh, yeah, Navy made that sames forbes.com list - 26th, I think? Good - but not West Point! ;)
hey - back to thread topic - this one had one, right? a new category of annoying hikers I haven't seen mentioned yet - hikers who can't stop bragging about their kids!
by the way, I haven't mentioned my oldest - who just finished his sophomore year, majoring in computer engineering, maintaining a 3.1 g.p.a. - let me know if you'd like to hear more!! ;)

I did give out about thirty sets of ear plugs when I stayed in shelters, and I listen as much as I talk but what the Hell. I have only met two people that really bothered me and it was more "scared me ****less" than annoyed me. One was a drunk at a shelter in PA when it was just him and me all night...........the other was a guy I hiked with for a while that had a bad habit of pulling out his derringer all of the time to show it to folks. If you carry a concealed weapon, it is best to keep it that way.

Wargy, need I remind you that it's May? That's when the Red Sox have been great historically. :p
The Yanks will sweep the Sox in Fenway June 9-11. I will be in da house wearing my NY Yankees cap. In the bleachers. 12 rows behind the Red Sox bullpen.
PS: I still fondly recall the Yanls sweeping the Sox (5 games) in August 2006. I was hiking the JMT at the time, but met a Yankee fan on the trail who informed me of the massacre. :banana

I like the Cubs. A Yankees Cubs World Series would be awesome. And I would feel good if the Cubs beat the Yanks. That's some long time fan suffering we're talkin' 'bout!
I would feel better if the Cubs beat the Red Sox in a World Series. And THAT would be a GREAT World Series. Any true baseball fan regardless of team allegiance would have to admit that is true.

Moving to Georgia (Robins AFB) in two months. Nice to know there are some Cub fans close by!! :banana
Yeah, so out on a winter overnighter some years ago, arrived at Horns Pond Lean-To near dark, couple of other JOCK hikers had pulled in just before me,
one guy looks me up and down, he had his plastic big $$$$$$$$$$ winter alpine boots on and I had my Sorrel pack boots/snowshoes on, he commented something about my gum rubbers and then looked at my pack and said i use to have one of those in a snickering voice like he had advanced far beyond what my imagination was capable of.
Big annoying ego hiker he was. He must have spent a fortune on all his new fangled gear. What i had on was bought and paid for.

Same here. I feel like I'm having a good time when I hike but according to some I have to spend a lot more money to have a good time walking in the woods. I don't know, if I enjoyed myself any more than I do it might kill me!
If I find something that works for me, I REALLY don't care if it's "hiker gearhead approved" or not, know what I mean?

Late feb 2002, 31 mls before I reached springer, after being on trail since the previous early fall, and a NOBO thru hiker (who had thru'd before) says to me, " look how big your pack is compared to mine, the days of me carrying a pack like that are over".
A close second is anyone who has tagged me a yellow blazer, even though they don't have the sack to be on a long distance hike thru winter, and have not a clue how bad weather can put the screws those who do.
Annoying hikers?
...those that type a lot and hike a little... [yes, that includes me :o]

There was this section hiker Yogi and I met in VA. He goes by the name of a hapless cartoon character who is also a member of the canine family. This guy talked non stop!!!! He was a 25 y/o virgin and would tell ya all about it but he was also obsessed with porn and would talk about that nonstop as well. This guy would follow you to the privy and then ask you about your bowel movements after you were done. HE never ever stopped talking!! Yogi and I didn't get away from him until we hitched to Winchester to visit friends. This guy wasn't a jerk he was just very, very annoying!!!!!!!

I stay out of shelters as much as possible unless its a raging storm too many people too much noise too much irritation and I am short on patience after a long day
Personally I haven't met that many annoying hikers, rarely do I stay at shelters and most of the time I see other hikers when passing on the trail. Maybe it's just me but when I'm on the trail I want to be as far remove from the thing I call social. If it wasn't for my wife wanting me to carry the cell phone I leave it at home also

When I was a kid one of my best friends always felt he had the best of everything. My Brooks shoes were not as good as his Addidas. I wanted a Yamaha Enduro 80 cc motorcycle. He insisted that anything less that a YZ was worthless. He was always picking and his dad always backed him up. Sounds very childish if you ask me for a someone to go up to another person and nitpick the crap out of what he is doing or what he has. I imagine I'll end up getting nitpicked as well. My son and I are starting to hike a bit. I've never done much, but what I have experienced, I've enjoyed. Some of my equipment it going to be a throwback to earlier times. And some might ask, "Why use an inferior product that is outdated when there are perfectly good products available"? I guess one could ask the same question of someone who rides a Harley. Why ride a Harley when on average the foreign bikes run circles around them? And at a better price. Why would anyone want a Ford Falcon when the Camry is faster and gets better milege? Why stick with a 27" TV when LCD is available? People are always snubbing someone else. I stay away from folks like that if at all possible. I don't like them. They are trouble. As I've read in a number of AT books. Hike your own hike. My equipment will be a reflection of me and what I believe works best for me. The only room to critisize someone on the trail would be constructive criticism. You know, to actually help someone. As a very inexperienced hiker, I am speaking from a logical point of view. I believe logic applies to hiking as well.

Hikers who complain about free hostels. I met a couple people who were saying how bare the jail hostel in palmerton was- well, it is free, and in a basement, and I personally loved it. So don't stay there if you don't like it, and don't whine about it.
Personally I haven't met that many annoying hikers...
You might want to meet a few on the trail - most are cool. And the annoying ones on the trail could not hold a candle to the annoying ones here. ;)
