I'm a newbie. I got the Byer's w/out the net and have spent a total of three weeks in it this fall and winter and love it. However after reading all the info you pro hammock campers post I feel woefully under equipped! I sleep like a rock in mine and at that price I might get the one with the net for the summer.

Campmor sells a removable bugnet tube that you can use over your current hammock. IIRC, it's more expensive than the entire hammock neo posted, though.

I picked up one for $10 from the bargin bin when Galyans switched to Dicks Sporting Goods. It's comfortable enough, but the zipper looks pretty fragile. I restiched the head end of the zipper to make sure I couldn't accidently pull the slide past the end of the zipper track.

If I was going to use it more than occasionally, I would replace the zipper with something more heavy duty, or maybe sew an additional length of bugnet 12-18 inches below the existing zipper opening so I could still have coverage if/when the zipper failed.

Since multiple strings are used to connect the hammock to the suspension rope (or webbing, in my case), rain running down to the hammock body may be an issue.

I've used this hammock with a JRB No-Sniveller under it and it fits just fine.

Thanks, Neo, for the pictures. I found one on line cheap last fall. Had its campout debut this past weekend (I had tried it out in the back yard). Tied it up using nylon cord. Slept GREAT!

When I broke camp, the nylon cord had pulled so tightly I could not untie it. OOOPS! Had to cut it down (the cord, not the hammock).

Next time I will use the wooden hangers.

I really enjoy my Byer Mosquito traveler- used it on a couple of short hikes in NC and Va-through the 100 Mile Wilderness last September with no problems at all. I also have the Jacks R Better tarp. This combo was really good for me. I haven't noticed a problem with the zipper, but I will keep my eye on that.

Hey Neo,

I got a Bayer net hammock in 2003(02?), right when they came out. I find it more comfortable than my H.H.a-sym. I had to go back to the piece of cotton tied on the support lines at each end to help the rain drip off, and since it is ment to hang 'looser' I have had some small trouble tarping it in the rain. I find it cooler than the H.H. in stuffy weather.

The best thing I like about the Bayer full net (I also have the no net version) is cheep, light, easy to get in, and it works great as a ground bivy when spending the night in a buggy field. The bayer line seems to hold my pad better than the H.H., but not as good as the old mesh net hammocks where the spaces in the bed catch the corners of the pad, holding it in place.

The worst thing is the support lines want to tangle up. So I fold it up with a little more care than the H.H. or my antique mesh net hammock.

I see in an above post that you seem to have no problem with a pad in your setup, what are you using and what pad? How are you keeping it in place? Do you move a lot during the night? I want my pad to lock in like it use to with the old mesh net model, making cold weather easier to deal with.

I just got mine...or my word it looks scarey as far as moving around a lot in it. I am afraid it will break on me. Of course I did not really get it for me, but for any guests coming along with me that want to try hammock camping. It was a eBay find only $15 New so could not resist.

I think I would trust it more if it had better cord/lines.
Is it easy to change out?
Has anyone done this yet?

I love the zipper choice.
Because the way I toss and turn all night it will not hold up for me as well as my Hennessey and Siam ones...but it is comfortable.

Anyone wanting to try hammock camping without a large investment...I would say get one.

WOW...just came back from that site you had the link too.
Talk about ultralight for all those wanting to carry a hammock to relax in but are still tent sleepers.

ONLY 6 ounces....oh and of course it had to be camouflage...NOW my other older son wants one just because its camo and matches the camo tarp I gave him!

Where are the PINK and PURPLE tarps and hammocks??? :)

I am thinking about it.
I just bought that new sleeping bag and extra hammock.
So MUST give hubby a break...at least until he buys another tool he thinks he needs. Tit for Tat game we play. Nah he never seems to mind as much as I seem to mind excess tool laying around... rusting out.
At least I can say I use my camping gear! :P

At over 200 lbs. I found that the Byer "parachut cord" broke within a couple of weeks. One strand one day, another strand another day, etc. I ended up cutting off all the thin line and threading a 6mm. nylon climbing accessory cord through each end of the hammock. Much better. This one already comes that way, comes in green, and, unlike mine, has mosquito netting.
(I have a HH Ultralight A-sym for summer use).

Here's my Webshots photo page including my hammocks, a tarp/bivy combo, and some tents, cheap and not so cheap.
