i've got in the bad habit of wanting something sweet after eating my meals.

What do you guys carry for a sweet treat while you are on the trail?

Chocolate!!!!

I second that one. Nothing raises the spirits like some chocolate. That's why M&Ms were invented for Uncle Sam.

can't vouch for the M&M thing, but i know first hand that nothing picked up a flagging soldier like making him a cup of cocoa... sometimes that's all he needed to get back on his feet and start being part of the team again... full of caffeine, carbs, and whatever drug is in cocoa (not coca!), it's a miracle drink... and included in every MRE/K/C-rat since WWII at least... i like a cup for breakfast almost every day when i'm out, winter or summer, and a second cup with dinner... daughter loves it too...

as far as other sweets go, i like jolly ranchers... especially the watermelon ones... something about the tart taste seems to kill thirst too... or at least gets you through a long dry stretch... they also don't seem to melt much unless it's really hot. even M&Ms melt in your GORP when it's hot enough...lifesavers (cherry!) will last too...

M & M's are great on the trail. I also carry Jolly Ranchers for a quick, sweet pick me up

During the winter, Snickers Bars seemed the universal weapon of choice against the cold.

You may also be surprised that your tastes change somewhat when you're out hiking all day for a few weeks. I find that I get up earlier on my own internal clock; I don't crave the caffeine in tea or a cappucino that I normally consume; and I don't need the "after-dinner mint" for my sweet tooth.

Another alternative to chocolate and Jolly Ranchers are the Baskin Robbins hard candy, which are surprisingly tasty and interesting for such small candies.

Chocolate! Specifically Hershey's Nuggets( milk chocolate, toffee, almond ). I try to carry enough to share w/ other hikers if I camp with any. They're usually gone by the first night, though.

I carried Dove Chocolates on my section. Ended up giving most away as chocolated didn't taste good to me. I would rather have had a hard candy or Twizzlers!

Granny Smith apples keep well and you can cut them in half and save for later.

Your tastes do change on the trail, and the more "vivid" the flavor, the better. Nothing does it at the end of a long day and after dinner like jelly beans.

I like black licorice. I have no idea of it's food value, if any. I simply like the taste. I don't carry much when I go out though, because once I take the first bite I'll eat a half-pound or more if I have it.

I'm not a chocoholic so I carry yogurt covered raisins or cherries. At least it's fruit and I can pretend the calories are worth it. :jump
