What kind of [homemade]stove do you use? What kind of fuel do you use and where did you purchase/steal it? Do you use the same container or cyphon it into another one?

I recently build a slightly modified pepsi stove. I've only run it on isopropyl alc. and when I went to look for de-nat. alc. the container was huge - meaning that I would have to waste all this cash on fuel that I can't take with me by cyphoning only some of it off into a smaller fuel canister and I might very well have to repeat this exercise on trail. Anywho, what are your' thoughts? What fuel should I be using?

WOOD...My stove isn't homemade, even though you can make one, it's a sierra zip woodburner. Been using one for years, did a thruhike with it, never have had any problems. More time hiking, less time detouring for fuel. Unlimited cook and boil time.

You can buy smaller cans of S-L-X brand denatured alcohol at almost any hardware store (including Home Depot). Or better yet, buy the car-fuel additive called HEET (burns a little better and comes in a small, easy-to-pour bottle). It's a bright yellow bottle you can't miss in any hardware, cap parts store, K-Mart, etc.

I use pepsi-type, made about 14-15 till I got the best flame and cook time. I use the denatured, put it in a small (4-8 oz.) bottle.

Isopropyl is part water. If you got 70 percent iso, you got 30 percent water. No good. If you don't want to get the big can do what jasonklass said - small S-L-X or yellow (Not Red) HEET. You shouldn't ever need more than 1 oz. a day unless it's really cold. Also, make a few more stoves, each a little different. Different hole sizes, different number of holes, etc. Some designs will do better than others.

i made several pepsi stoves, several other kinds of alcohol stoves, and finally settled on the ion stove. i use denatured alcohol in it, which i buy in the big gallon cans from walmart. i carry my fuel in an old soda bottle, small or medium (8 or 12 oz? i forget) depending on trip length... for a long-distance trip (more than a 10 day trip with a prepositioned cache in the middle of it), i'd buy the yellow HEET brand alcohol/fuel additive/defroster already mentioned... isopropyl alcohol has too much water in it.

Fuel: wood. Stove: none. Pack weight of fuel and stove: zero. Well, the matches I carry probably weigh a fraction of an ounce.
