I'm looking to make my own tree straps to hang my hammock. Having never owned any, i was wondering what people think the ideal length for a tree strap would be?
Thanks in advance.

SnackMan 02-16-2006, 21:01 you should be good on all but the bigguns with 4 foot. Personaly I like em long, as they ad to the length between trees that you can string up and you can always wrap more than once to shorten. titanium_hiker 02-17-2006, 02:45 I use a speer-like system, where the tree huggers are the hammock staps- it is all webbing. Then you have tonnes of leeway to work with. I had 9 metres of webbing (total) (I think) which maybe was a bit obsessive. JoeHiker 02-17-2006, 12:31 On my Long Trail Hike, I brought two of the really long ones and two of the regular ones. I like the flexibility I get from having a few different length straps. More than makes up for the tiny bit of added weight neo 02-17-2006, 13:19 mine are 66 inches long:cool: neo peter_pan 02-17-2006, 15:30 42 inches will work...easy wrap on most trees...Also, 2/3 wrap is all you need to keep the suspension rope from exerting any pressure on the back or sides of the tree ( The front 1/3 won't harm the tree... why carry more weight). Pan Cheesewhiz 02-17-2006, 15:40 When I carry my hammock on the AT I carry two different sizes. I carry one that is 45" and the other is 65". This way you have the option for bigger trees as well as the 6"+ tree caliper. tailwind105 02-18-2006, 18:22 thanks for everyones input. i was able to get 12 feet of strap, cut it in half and made 3 inch loops at either end comming to 66 inch straps. thanks again. |
