Cool.

Anyone one in the Asheville/Black Mountain area want to have a couple cold ones after work some day?

We were in Asheville last weekend. We had cold ones. Drive-By Truckers were in town. Talk about pseudo-hippyville! I'll meet you in Black Mtn. next time.

Yeah, but I have never heard anyone say "I'm end to ending the LT." You thru-hike the trail in order to become an "end to ender." Yeah, I know. Semantics.

I once End-to-Ended the Long Trail, I'd End-to-End it again and one day, I swear, I will, in fact, End-to-End the Long Trail once again, but I can't say I'm End-to-Ending the LT unless I'm on the LT or I would.

End-to-End is a verb, damn it!:D

Sorry, I had bills to pay and missed some good stuff. Thank God, OF was available to set things straight.;)

My girlfriend died and rather than finding an additional job part time job in order make ends meet in the rat race, I decided for the time being I'd just move to my sister's where I can redo the garage and make it into a studio/homebase jumpoff point to continue hiking.

The Variety is the best venue for concerts in Atlanta. The Vortex also has the best burgers, however, since they banned kids I don't get there too much anymore. Five Guys probably has the next best burger -- easily the best value for your money -- however, the restaurants have absolutely no character -- kinda like eating at McDonalds.

The Variety is indeed a great place to see a show! I took my daughter there to See Iron & Wine with Calexico. Great show!

Natalie Cole is coming to town soon. I wouldn't mind catching that show.

The Variety is indeed a great place to see a show! Y'all already know about the free secret parking area 1 block from the Variety, right? Downhill on Euclid to the next traffic light, it's an off-kilter intersection. Go thru the light then turn left immediately into the parking lot of the old school where the Horizon Theater is located. Small entrance, sorta kinda in the intersection. If Euclid goes uphill you missed it. Park in front or drive behind the school to find 3/4 an acre of parking. No fee, no problems, easy walk back to the Variety.

Don't park in front of the school on Tuesdays or Thursdays. Some idiots on the front lawn might hit your car with balls, clubs, or rings.

Going to the Variety we usually just pay the two bucks and park by Junkman's Daughter and then walk the area.

Saw Rusted Root a coupla weeks ago....their opening act was much better than they are today...they looked completely burned out...not at all the group with the positive message anymore...just some old band looking for that paycheck.

I think MinnesotaSmith may be a slackpacker in the original sense of the word in some respects, but he seems to have combined that with the new-fangled slackpacking in a way that must be turning some people's world upside down. Myself, I don't like the term slackpacking since in my mind it connotes that something is missing from a hike.:( Dayhiking or hiking with support are legitimate ways to hike the A.T. as far as I'm concerned.;)

I once endeavored to be a slackpacker in the original sense of the word, but, alas, I realized I wasn't Paul Bunyan and I couldn't have afforded to board Babe the Blue Ox when I passed thru the Smokies. Besides, I don't think I would have made it to Katahdin that way anyway; hence, I took a different tack and it worked out just fine for me.:)

We are both MinnesotaSmith men, mweinstone, you and me. The Appalachian Trail community -- some would contend there is no such thing -- but I beg to differ -- must have language that has meaning upon which we all can agree. The term thru-hiker is a general term which should be modified with adjectives that have shared meaning too.

I would love to see us spending our time on better things too.

It's the technology that's got everyone's thinking messed up. We got it way back when. We didn't even need HYOH. We simply tolerated people who were a little bit:rolleyes: different.

Hiking without a pack? That was always optional -- at least the last 5.2 miles. I carried my Kelty Tioga across the Knife Edge, but that doesn't make me any better than anyone else!

Poles, what are poles? I think Poles is the politically correct term for the citizens of Poland, isn't it? Please correct me as I wouldn't want to offend anyone.;)

I call your attempt at humor providing the hooks upon which The Thread hangs its posts and keeps it moving forward, alive and well. I merely tried to add more hooks for others to hang their stuff and provide a few laughs while entertaining myself in the process.

Shades of Gray isn't a trail name and never was. It is but a screen name signifying that there is much gray between black and white.

The real question is will MS continue to long distance hike.MS has not kept his next (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showpost.php?p=50227&postcount=45) long-distance hiking plans secret. This AT hike is but a shake-down hike, a mere warm-up, a training program for his dream hike: a traverse of Alaska. I believe he was planning the same hike that W-B's Colter completed earlier this year.

Only for his Alaska hike he was planning on carrying a lot more gear.

Why does it have to end? It's the MS update. Who knows what events await MS after he hikes? We'll need updates about those, too. Will he find a biologically significant female up to his standards? Become a light-weight hiking guru? I wan't answers to these and other questions.

Topcat, I think you're right. What you say is true for maybe 90 of east coast hikers. Most of us should plan to see Alaska from a tour bus or an RV.

MS likes to recommend books to everyone he meets. Before he goes off to Alaska, he needs to read Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer. Things can go very wrong in a place like Alaska, and the "Trail Angels" who come along are the real thing.

MS called last night to report that he is 56 miles into The Wilderness with another 41 miles to Abol Bridge. He continues to hike with father and son team Minnow and Fish. Says he was able to hike 16.80 miles on 10/08, and
13.80 miles on 10/09.

His current schedule is as follows:
10/12: Reach Abol Bridge
10/13: Camp in Baxter Park
10/14: Summit K

Regarding health, MS sounds quite tired. He also reports knee problems and has developed areas about 1" in diameter of small blisters on the arches of both feet. Even with these issues he still sounds determined.

After K, MS will return to Hanover to begin hiking south. He plans to take 2-3 days of R&R in Hanover. His current plan is to Hitch to Hanover, but is open to any other suggestions (maybe a ride, or shuttle to a bus terminal).

In miscellaneous items, MS reports that Whitehouse Landing will close for the season on 10/15. Dead Bear, a follow hiker. was chased by a moose after a near head-on collision while hiking at night. Rumor is circulating of a solo SOBO thruhiker who left from K on 10/08. MS will provide name later.

Well if he has blisters on both feet tell him to try that crazy tootpaste thing as a experiment. There was a thread here on WB where they wanted someone with 2 blisters of equal size to test the "toothpaste on blister" theory.

I was faced with a weather issue when it came time to wrap up my thru-hike. My decision was to push and finish a day earlier to take advantage of good weather. I think it would be a shame to summit on a rainy day with no view from Baxter Peak.

He could finish early, climb in the rain or wait for better weather. Unless the rain freezes, the choice will be his to make.

emerald
10-10-2006, 16:42
It doesn't look like Sunday or early the following week would be any better from the standpoint of weather. Perhaps best to wrap it up then and head south.

Environmental lapse rate = 3.5 degrees Fahrenheit / 1000 feet of elevation gain.

Forcasted low Friday night at Millinocket = 35 degrees - 14 degrees = possible ice on the Hunt spur and elsewhere above treeline. Maybe Sunday will be summit day after thawing and evaporation.

I hope to finish in 120 days and then possibly start heading south again. After that I believe I will be done with the Greentunnel. As for being under the influence of MS gas, that evening in Jersey(Waywanda). I was in my tent and I did hear the explosion from his arse, and then a few moments later he was out wandering around the trees with a red headlight on. The next morning, He greeted me with the remark "I think I may have Lime's Disease". Now this all was before even saying hello or good morning. I must also mention that MS did offer us some extra water that he had been carrying(bottled water). I declined. Sprocket, Sounds like you'll see the AT from every possible direction I wish I had the youth and time to give it a try. Maybe you could also complete the Long Trail next year as part of your Yo-Yo.

I was helping MS on that weekend by slacking him. On that day he hiked from Route 94 in Vernon to the Waywayanda Shelter. The smaller pack you saw him with is a daypack he borrowed from me. He had a great deal of difficulty the previous week due to the high heat and humidity. I am sure you recall those weeks in July.

MS had been diagnosed with Lyme Disease the morning you had met him. I picked up his medications that day at a pharmacy near my home. The prescription had been called in by his family doctor. Having had Lyme disease myself, I understand why he might have mentioned it to you. He indeed discussed it at length with me after I mentioned that I had also once had Lyme. Unfortunately, too many hikers have this in common.

The bottled water, refilled Poland Spring bottles, was given to MS by me. I carried it to the shelter which is only a few hundred yards from the park office. He told me that he didn't need it and would share it with other hikers. MS has been accused of being selfish with supplies (especially water). Its good to hear a fellow hiker mention that he was willing to share.

You mention that you were camping in your tent, and had heard the explosion from MS followed be seeing him in the woods. The front of that shelter is located at the edge of a very steep and rocky embankment. I would assume you were camping either beside or behind the shelter, areas which are much more level.

You have been quoted earlier in this thread as having personnally witnessed, at 3:00 AM, MS urinate off the shelter and fart in the faces of fellow hikers. How is this possible if you were in your tent, in the dark, behind the shelter? Is it possible that MS had left the shelter with his red headlamp and was actually looking for a place to urinate in the woods?

I bring up this discussion only because MS was taken to task for his hiker ethics based on your report. Did you actually witness what is described in post #2573 on page 129, or is this a secondhand story? Perhaps the poster of #2573 misunderstood the details of your story.

Keep my name handy for your hike next year. I'd be glad to provide any help you might need while you're here in NJ.
Good Luck!

Sly, Thanks for the encouragement. I failed to mention college tuition, car payments, job, house, etc,etc,etc,.... all those things designed to keep a good boy in line.

I never let a weekend go by without hiking somewhere, AT, Long Path, Catskills, DWG, Harriman Park etc. I do hope and plan to thruhike someday. For personal reasons I would like it to be 2011 the year I turn 56.

You can tell that I strongly support Minnesota Smith. Beyond the fact that I find him to be an interesting person, I feel his thruhike attempt has a lot of valuable symbolism, at least to me. In particular it shows how sometimes the most unlikely person can sometimes accomplish the most unlikely things by sheer determination. I might not be inspired to attempt a thruhike because of his story, but in would surely serve as an inspiration not to quit

My hiking companion and I were in our tent near the picnic table, our other three friends were in the shelter with MS when the incidents happened, I heard the blast and could hear the urine splashing on the ground, It was quite loud and due to the heat we had no rain fly on the tent and I'm quite a fitful sleeper to begin with. The following morning you could still see the exact area where the piss went, when I commented to our friends about what I saw and heard, thats when they told me the fart he blew was right near their heads, while he was still pissing, they were going to say something to him while he was pissing, and when they looked up at him, thats when he blew his cannon. Now to this day I don't know how the man could've gotten Lyme's disease, I saw him with 2 pairs of gaiters on, long sleeve shirt and other coverings. For the record I am a registered nurse and have been exposed to Lyme's disease along with seeing quite a few bullseye rashes. MS would've been better off just wearing pants and checking his lower extremities each night. It also is a big plus to get rid of the hair off your legs prior to hiking. The nymph stage of the tick is extremely difficult to see. Please keep in mind that the disease usually takes more than 24 hours to pass from tick(imbedded) to human, that's why checking is so important daily. Back of knees, ankles, perianial area, and armpits. I never mentioned any of this to MS, because I felt he has been told how to hike and care for himself long enough by other hikers, christ's sakes! If the man want's to carry a piano and wear a thong. More power to him. I'm only bothered if someone imposes on my hike or my safety. I was offended by the fact that there was not enough room in the bear box, because of all his ****. But I kept my mouth shut and dealt with my food in another bear safe way.

Not trying to divert the discussion, but there is no excuse for this kind of sloppiness in writing. You know damn well that "wants" does not contain an apostrophe. What next, someone "hike's" 13 "mile's" in his "boot's" and "get's" tired at the end of the day?

On the other hand, you may have been bored typing out that long post and decided to insert an apostrophe into wants just to needle people. Either way, such error detracts from your post, which tends to work in Minnesota Smith's favor.

And by the way, what is wrong with letting loose with a bit of gas at 3am when everyone is sleeping?

You are correct. The problem with climbing that mountain is you must come down some way. Coming down the Hunt Spur is no picnic either.

Regardless of the route he choses, I would suggest he carry no more gear than he must for safety's sake to ease the burden on his knees.

The Abol Slide will also do a number on the seat of your britches! I loved coming down, faster than most might dare, but then as you may have gathered I'm a little different! At times descent resembles a glissade sans snow.

Then that makes Dudley easy too. It's a long, steep hike down, boulder-hopping all the way as I recall. I'd like to do much more exploring in BSP and Quebec intrigues me. That's about all that excites me anymore.

I do enjoy helping and observing those to whom the A.T. is still new. There's something about the process of discovery and the attendant excitement that satisifies, even if it's someone else for whom the experience is new.

Well, I didn't think either the Dudley or Abol Slide were particularly difficult when I first did them 25-30 years ago. Somehow the last time I did them a couple of years ago, they seemed more difficult.

I blame all those thru hikers. They must have moved some of the rocks to make it more difficult. I can't think of any other reasons.

Abol Bridge tonight, enjoying reading the register. Still on track to summit on the 14th.

Maine has been beautiful, the foliage is wonderful, but he's really had to work for the views. Also lots of mud, bogs, goo, slogs, fords (he counted 14 just today), but, then again, there's no problem finding water! He's ok, but his Wingfoot book didn't survive Maine.

A SOBO hiker, "Griss", left Baxter just a few days ago. MS is walking with 3 other hikers.

Not much else to report. He's sounding good. Looking forward to a few easy miles to Baxter tomorrow & the mountain is still open for climbing. He'll take the AT up and back down.

He's hitching back to Hanover immediately afterwards, the next great adventure. He has a few leads on places to stay for a few days before resuming his hike.

MS didn't put us there. He's 44 years old, he's not hiking to avoid the service. I doubt that he feels his hike is more important than the safety and lives of our men in Iraq. Its a total shame we are in this mess. If the generals and politicians running this thing had allowed Rock and his WB brothers to hike into Tora Bora four years ago to kill Bin Ladin this Iraq mess might never have happened.

For MS, this is his 15 minutes of fame. My guess is that he might be willing to trade it for the opportunity to strangle Bin Ladin.

Well you have to understand a few things. We are human too and we have points where we gotta throw a flag on the play. We often get critisized from different sides on many issues. A while back there was a rowe about death on the AT that cause a great deal of critisizm from some that decided discussion of death was improper while others thought it was quite proper because it was a trail safety issue. I think you remember.

Here is another thread, the originater even asked for it to be closed, people started to want it closed on the thread, and the subject happened to reach the point for one of the admnistrator/moderators. So an admin decided to go ahead and close it based on the direction it was taking. It was getting off the original topic.

As to Moderators. We do have some other than the adminsitrators. Always looking for level headed people that can try and detach themselves from a discussion and take an objective view when they do moderate. I can tell you from personal experience that all of us agonize over any censorship and often seek each other's advice on our back forums with other administrators and moderators when taking actions. Dixicritter did it with this one as well.

As it goes, we sometimes make mistakes with either letting some people go to far sometimes or stopping conversations too soon. Wither way, the forum still runs and some of these topics still come up later. And with that, people sometimes learn from what got the thread closed and learn that maybe it isn't a good idea to go somewhere with their posts.

Anyway, thanks for the profs. We try to keep the majority of people happy.

One more point about free speech. We love it here except over time we have also had a few users that only want to use this privilege of allowing people to talk freely about hiking issues to sneak in racism, threats of violence, hate speech against women, and just generally crude language in an apparent attempt to just try and spark people because they think it is cute (trolling). These people are usually the first to claim someone is censoring their "free speech" when in reality, they could care less about what this board is really about and just want to see how far they can push things. It amazes me how someone can post some of the crap they do here and then tenuously connect it to the purpose of the site and claim their "free speech" rights are violated. I think their mommas raised them wrong.

On October 14 in the year of our Lord 2006 at 2:06 PM EDST, MS touched the summit sign on Mount Katahdahtahdihtin.

Witnessing the ceremony were Fish, his son Minnow, and 10 students from Benin College. MS drank a toast of schnapps, poured the rest of the bottle over the sign and, before a hushed, repsectful crowd, read a poem by Robert Service, and placed his Springer pebble at the base of the sign.

The ceremony followed a 5 hour climb to the summit and was in turn followed by a 3.5 hour descent. He described portions of the ascent as “the Mahmoosenick Notch at an angle.”

Thru-hikers in the vicinity, but not at the summit, were Dogwood, No Pain, John & Paul.

He’s now in Milleniumnocket planning his return to Hanover. Once there he will take a few days rest during which he hopes to distract a co-ed or two from their mid-term studies, and then he will commence the southbound conclusion of his thru-hike.

DWM, I get it. Very nice, subtle and discrete. Almost Freudian. It's not as obvious as that. Dr. Phart keeps correcting my spellings of northeastern place names and I was just dangling some bait for him. But he didn't bite.

He probably has me on his ignore list.

I cannot tolerate such passive agressive behavior! I'm putting him on my ignore list for not ignoring me.

And properly so. We in the northeasr have little to be proud of. Would you also deny us some correctly spelled place names -- well that and easily the best quality of life in the nation, probably the world.

but they're reluctant to put rs on the ends of words when pronouncing them. It took me a while living among them to figure out what they do with all those rs.

They save them up to use later with words like saw. Saw, you're wondering. Yes, as in saw up that blowdown over there. You see saw is pronounced with an r inserted in it.

I won't explain how they pronounce over and there. I'll save that for later.

Congrats for what? He climbed a mountain. There's many more to go.

For those who have yet to read the entire MS forum, how much more does he have to do?

From some of the stories I've heard that's not the worst thing that's ever been on the sign.

DWM-"Yet he forced me to reveal my baiting tactics?!

I cannot tolerate such passive agressive behavior! I'm putting him on my ignore list for not ignoring me."Sorry, I was out having fun at the Gathering when you were posting and just got home after a 2 day drive. But then you won't know if I've posted this reply and you won't know if I put you on my ignore list because you may have put me on yours! This is so confusing it is making my head hurt. ;)

Somebody on another forum mentioned that a certain poster named MinnesotaSmith was hiking the whole AT and posted a link to WB's.
Never heard of the guy before that but have been checking in to see his progress.
Glad to see he made he made it up Katadin before they closed it.
Hope he enjoys his southbound make up section. Too bad he had to skip over like that.
Anyway I thought the whole AT was called the Long Trail until I started reading here.
One other good thing came out of it also. Some gentleman got a ride from the trailhead into Johnson on Saturday from me. If it hadn't been for WB's he would have done a little more walking.
