I've made it to Stratton-Arlington Road/Kelley Strand Road, just south of Stratton Mtn. That gives me only about 37 miles left in Vermont, I believe. With 90 in MA and 40 in CT, I'm getting there. My next piece is an overnight over Glastenbury Mtn. to VT9. I zeroed today @ the hostel in Rutland for multiple reasons, one of which I have a question about.

1) I'd like to make use of the hostel in Bennington near Friendly's that is not listed in the guidebooks. I have a phone # for the operators, an Ana and Chris, but no one ever answers. This # is (802) 447-7585. Can anyone tell me anything about this place?
...That phone number is listed by Arla (WB member) here on WB.

So, who's planning the next year's annual minnesotasmith hike?

will mattski carry the minnesotasmith torch next year?

I hope not. Constantly complaining about the trail from Georgia to Maine isn't the type of torch another thru-hiker should be carrying.

will mattski carry the minnesotasmith torch next year?

He's doing a pretty good job carrying a torch right now. :D

I'm carryin' a torch for you
I'm carryin' a torch
You know how much it costs
To keep carryin' a torch

Flame of love it burns so bright
That is my desire
Keep on liftin' me, liftin' me up
Higher and higher

You're the keeper of the flame
And you burn so bright
Baby why don't we re-connect
Move into the light

I've been going to and fro on this
And I'm still carryin' a torch
You must know how much it's worth
When I'm carryin' a torch (alright)

Baby you're the keeper of the flame
And you burn so bright
Why, why, why, why, why, why don't we re-connect
And move on further, into the light

I've been calling you on the phone
'Cause I'm carryin' a torch (yeah)
I can do it all on my own
'Cause I'm carryin' a torch

I'm carryin' a torch for you, baby
I'm carryin' a torch
You know how much it's worth
Because I'm carryin' a torch (one more)

I'm carryin' a torch for you, baby
I'm carryin' a torch
You know how much it's worth

Minnesotasmith is just too important to let him fall into obscurity. We must carry on his legacy, his honor, into next year on the trail...we will NEVER forget him..

That is a killer idea. But I don't know if most if you could find many up to the challenge. I mean a standard 5-6 month thru-hike that went pretty much straight through wouldn't give the same drama that this one has.

Functions with one input (A+1=5) don’t exist in the real world. If you had ever taken multidimensional calculus or physics you’d know how unrealistic your statement is on face value..

I've taken both and make my living using both. And a there are many functions that recieve one input and have a predicatable output based on that input. If there weren't, they'd be planes falling out of the sky.

but you're right with trail names.

A function is a totally different concept than a name.

And why should't a trail have two names. Most hikers have two!!!

Its been a long time, but let me see if I understand. are you saying:

AT+MS=BS ?

Actually, in this case, the function can be much more open-ended...

For example... MS+X=BS , where X=any input. Another way to say this would be MS=BS*infinity...

(can't find the symbol for infinity...)

When we see future hikers spending more time in town than on the trail, getting kicked out of hostels or getting escorted out of dartmouth, and complaining every step of the way. We can say they are Minnesotasmithing the trail!

I think you are actually mistaken. I see it as a function of X, where again X = any input.

MS(X) = BS^X

It is most certainly exponentially related.

Individuals with AS can exhibit a variety of characteristics and the disorder can range from mild to severe. Persons with AS show marked deficiencies in social skills, have difficulties with transitions or changes and prefer sameness. They often have obsessive routines and may be preoccupied with a particular subject of interest. They have a great deal of difficulty reading nonverbal cues (body language) and very often the individual with AS has difficulty determining proper body space. Often overly sensitive to sounds, tastes, smells, and sights, the person with AS may prefer soft clothing, certain foods, and be bothered by sounds or lights no one else seems to hear or see. It's important to remember that the person with AS perceives the world very differently. Therefore, many behaviors that seem odd or unusual are due to those neurological differences and not the result of intentional rudeness or bad behavior, and most certainly not the result of "improper parenting". By definition, those with AS have a normal IQ and many individuals (although not all), exhibit exceptional skill or talent in a specific area. Because of their high degree of functionality and their naiveté, those with AS are often viewed as eccentric or odd and can easily become victims of teasing and bullying. While language development seems, on the surface, normal, individuals with AS often have deficits in pragmatics and prosody. Vocabularies may be extraordinarily rich and some children sound like "little professors." However, persons with AS can be extremely literal and have difficulty using language in a social context.

MurphyGreen-"While language development seems, on the surface, normal, individuals with AS often have deficits in pragmatics and prosody. Vocabularies may be extraordinarily rich and some children sound like "little professors."Language isn’t always quite normal. Persons with AS can have problem with proper phrasing, or awkward sentence construction, i.e., "no longer of any biological significance to me”, or not use contractions. What they say in their normal conversation would be different than reciting a Robert Service poem they learned which could sound normal. There may also be a lack of facial and verbal expression no mater what is happening to them. Your post pretty well covered it but it should be pointed out that it’s a little like a menu, a person with AS could have a random mixture of any of the symptoms.

The rangers are so thankful for being saved, they agree to shovel the snow off the trail, carry his pack and take him home every night for a nice home cooked meal. MS reads a selected poem each evening to provide guidance and inspiration to the rangers' families.

To set the scene: Me 'n' some friends were sitting around a campfire passing a bottle and someone tells a knock-knock joke. One guy who's been bogarting the bottle and getting pretty quiet then tries to tell one.

Him: "Knock Knock"
Us: "Whose there?" in three-part harmony.
Him: Gesundheit! No, wait... I mean, uh... Hatch!

First time I've ever seen someone too drunk to tell a knock-knock joke.

Baro's journal, one of the funniest this year, describes his encounter with Minnesota Smith in this entry and the next.

http://www.trailjournals.com/entry.cfm?id=140101

That entry reminded me of my own horrible night spent in the Bryant Ridge shelter. It's a very new shelter, a neat design, good location, and completely infested with fleas. Nobody got out of it without a blood donation to the Flea Gods.

mweinstone-"im very proud of you for your hiking and for being you while others insist you be them."You have that exactly backwards. MS has made it a point of telling everyone he meets, or that he comments to on WB , that they should conform to his view of the world and do things his way. From the hostel in Palmerton, the AMC hut system, the trail maintainers, to what the women he meets should do (or not do), the list is endless.

The rest of the world would be much happier if MS would actually just hike, mind his business, and leave them alone. Of course if he did that this thread wouldn't exist!;)

when i put ms's photo disk in my laptop,..it plays a slide show of his summit bid. in usuall minnesota smith style, he spaces the photoes as to have equal numbers going up, on summit, and going down. the vistas he captures are the ones we all see in postcards and classic shots, like knifes edge and such, but he does a fine job of getting new and freash angles i wouldnt think these photographic skills come in the same package as scientist. god has made minnesota fearfull and wonderfully as he makes us all. we are beings of strength and power . its really starting to show in a certian thru hiker to be i know named lucas smith. the film was wet and damaged and the man would not print it after he developed it. but a second employee came and tryed. the pics have damage spots if you look close. like mallorys! im so proud to have you guys and gals. i really must come up with a special gift to the AT community in my life. it may not be store bought but ill make sure its heart felt.will take laptop and photos to work and download more .

Well that guy is just "Pirate". not the same as "The Pirate"...
Does the "The" make it a different name?
It might cause it to sort under the "T"'s in the index.

well then my memory is going to heck cause it sure does not look like the stick I saw when he was in SNPI am assuming, I don't know for sure. If it's the same then he's whittled on it some because the dark inner bark has been completely removed. Earlier pictures showed it with irregular brown streaks - the inner bark - that are now gone.

We want more pictures..Which is a good time to bring up an important point: MS ruined 3 photos, including 2 that would be very important to him, by not investing in a good camera.

It doesn't have to be expensive - my wife went on a biz trip to China and took our good camera. I was going somewhere else and wanted a decent digital. I set a limit of $100 for the second camera. Wal-Mart had a bubble-packed no-name hanging on the wall, buncha megapixels & zoom for about $60. Cool! Figured I'd saved $40. But the supplied card only held two pictures. Oops. Back to Wally for $30 of memory and a little camera case, and with rounding and tax I'm about at $100. It's now my hiking camera. It takes nice outdoor photos and would have saved two of MS' summit shots.

this is ridiculous.. I heard someone was pressured into giving up the name Lone wolf this season... Just because there already is one, dosn't make the name any less meaningful to the person who chose it. There are 14 Michaels living on my street... there can be two whoevers on the trail.. If we use this logic, the world will soon be out of trail names.. So says 1 of probabbly 25 "The Dudes"

I thought MS wanted a woman that would sit at home and cook while producing children. Seems BS is only good for one - and that is a maybe. If I remember right, while she has the equipment to produce, her parenting skills are not supposed to be all that and a bag of chips.

Actually I only knew of two others before you came along...that makes four of us. If someone was pressured into dropping lone wolf that pressure came from their own security issues because none of the lone wolves I know give a crap about such things. Same goes for jesters, turtles and snotrockets, among others...skywalkers, on the other hand, usually can't stand to run into eachother.

Actually, the residents of my birthstate, the People's Republic of Masssachusetts, DESERVE to have Minnesota Smith in their neighborhood for a week. He might be the only Republican left in the Commonwealth!

But in truth, as he well knows, I'm just kidding. Nice work, Smitty, and let us know how you're getting along. Looks like your ETA in Kent should be around the 20th......looks like you'll make it home for Thansgiving after all, and while you're eating turkey, the folks who wrote you off in Georgia can feast on crow.
