I got a case of Mountainhouse Entree's. Oh dear, I had a case of that once. Drink lots of clear fluids and take double doses of Pepto-Bismal and your case should clear up in a couple of days.

Do feel free to brag about it on THE THREAD. :D They should be arriving anytime now for multiple regular posters here.
No, don't put yours on E-Bay! The market value can be expected to rise over time, so it would be way too soon to think about doing that sort of thing. Wait until some time in the future when you get laid off from your job and need to make up several mortgage payments real quick. ;)
BTW, I will be out of town the next 3 days, so likely will not have online access during that time. I WILL work on my AT book some during this time, I promise...
Got mine today. It's on the fridge with other famous guys I met like Big Tom and Lex from Survivor Africa.

by hooking up this foot powered generater /storage/ battery devise with a flexable solar pannel and a distiller, you can distill water from air and power it by the sun with a days stored reserve and foot crank back up. each unit will produce 2.5 gal per day in mid to low humidity. comments? i think ill buy the three devices.
Sorry, Can't be done.

listen panzer. water can be distilled from the air useing electricity.you cant argue this point. the units on the market made to sit on a kitchen countertop cost about 500 bucks for a great one that produces 2.5 gal per day of disstilled water. another fact. all im sayin is they can be hooked up to alternitive power sources and run in a crisis. whats the prob?

Creating Water from Thin Air - Aqua Sciences has developed a machine that can extract up to 600 gallons of water a day from thin air even in locations like arid deserts. The 20 foot machine does this without using or producing toxic materials or byproducts. The machine works based on the natural process by which salt absorbs water." The AirQua AirWater Maker is defined by unparalleled quality, producing water that is safe and clean enough to drink from both the generator and the dispenser.
Whether it is low humidity or wet atmospheric condition, the AirQua AirWater Maker is able to produce water relative to the existing condition. Relative Humidity (RH) is one of the key factors that determines the rate of water production. The higher the RH, the better it is for getting more water from the air. Ideally, the RH level should be at least 40% or above to achieve the machine's optimum performance. The AirQua AirWater Maker also depends on the temperature to operate at its’ optimum level. The ideal temperature is 20° Celsius (68F) or above.
Air is drawn into the AirQua AirWater Maker by way of a suction fan. It will pass through a double-layered anti-bacterial air filter to get rid of impurities and foreign particles before hitting the condenser. The air, now dehumidified, will then return to the atmosphere, cleaner and less damp.
Meanwhile, water is simultaneously “extracted” at the surface condenser (coils) and “harvested” at the water collection tray below before storing in the water collection reservoir tank.
The water in the water collection reservoir tank then passes through a 4-stage proprietary purification process to remove organic odours and dissolved impurities, eliminate fine waterborne contaminants including bacteria, viruses, parasites and other disease-causing agents, and to further elevate and magnify water taste.
As a final safeguard, water is disinfected with UV light in the main reservoir tank to ensure the removal of bacteria and viruses before it is pumped into the hot & cold tank, ready for dispensing.
Water from the main reservoir tank and dispensing water tanks goes through a continuous cycle of filtration and sterilisation (a patented 24 hours recirculation system) to keep the water constantly clean and pure.
The AirQua AirWater Maker net result is clean, disinfected, pure and fresh water – totally from the atmosphere.

Matthew, Why not collect and drink the water from your air conditioner drain pan? Same concept. Use a little coil cleaner first.

Just the idea that you could do this with a foot pump, and make enough useful water to offset the manual effort of using the foot pump.

my folks used to have a dehumidifier that i had to empty every day. sucked gallons of water out of the air. Dont know if i would have wanted to drink it though.

New years day on monday? Or do you mean New Years eve on Sunday? Either way, that is a no go for me.
I will not even ask my wife. Her response would not make it worth it. Plus she has a migraine today.
I will call later this evening when I get out of the store.

Sorry, I can't make the hike either. We decided to have a New Years party and we are going to spend the rest of the week getting ready.
I have heard that there are some good times on Springer on New Years. I said to the wife that next year I wanted to drive down to Springer and spend New Years there. The wife doesn't do winter hikes so she's not coming. I may send her down to the Islands with her sister just so she doesn't rag on me. She bought in on that. Anyway that's a long range plan.
We'll see what happens.

im goin to faimount park to feed the bums. its the largest inner city park in the world. it has the largest war memorial in pa. the revolutionary war memorial, or wispering bench as it is known. if you wisper against the back of the 50 yard curved bench, it can be heard as if its in your ear on the other end. and we have perverts humping in the bushes. and junkeys shooting up under the bridge supports and then theres matthewski on his bike. im known as " the white guy". and we have the straightest natural mile of river for sculling. and canadian geese. but no minnesota smiths in resedence. there kinda scarce. there were more in the olden days. but not now. they were mostly replaced by the newer younger wyoming skateboarder types back in the 90's.oh and we have eagles fever. its like springer fever with violence and green food. and if your in philly , dont miss our poison tap water. mayor street says to run the water 3 minutes before drinking. funney,..he dosent mention why we should do this. maby for a treet , when i return, ill post some pics of homeless hiking gear and there uses.us hikers hang our food from bears. bums hang large multipul trashbags with all there stuff up high in trees so the trashmen dont get em. BTW, let's not leave asking questions about math and hammocks out of the things that can get long-winded and pointless threads going.
I called this year earlier in the season because i was takign a group of kids to Harpers and wanted to know if the ATC office was open on weekends yet. It wasnt, but the lady offered to come in and show the kids some stuff if we called ahead. We didnt take them up on it that trip but the next hike we went in and got to talk to the same lady. They were very nice to us and the kids are hooked on backpacking after talking to one of the staff who had thru hiked in the past.
I felt like they were fullfilling part of their mission that day. If you dont want to give them money, then dont. You dont have to be sarcastic or holier than thou in announcing your patch delivery and the stuff that came with it. Some people may like to have those things and others won't. It is funny when HYOH only applies to you but everyone else is wrong. With all the complaining you did on your hike, i would think you would want to do some trail maintanence.
Good luck in your future hikes, hope you get to do your Alaska traverse.

I figure that a hiker is analogous to a soldier in that as long as a soldier does his job, he is entitled to gripe. So as long as I hike, I'm entitled to have opinions about what I encounter as part of the trail experience. Concomitantly, people who don't hike would arguably not be entitled to much of any opinion about the AT...:-?

================================================
Short answer: biodiesel/vegetable oil cannot be used in gasoline engines, and ethanol cannot be used in diesel engines. (No practical conversion for engine types or the fuels can be envisioned.) This is for the same reason that gasoline engines and diesel engines cannot be converted to use each other's fuel. Neither ethanol nor biodiesel/vegetable oil matters much at all in any event when it is derived from massive petroleum inputs for fertilizer, pesticide, fuel for processing/transportation, etc., etc. Plus, only when cellulose-to-glucose conversion to feed the microbes is economic and practical on a large scale will ethanol be more than a footnote in replacing petroleum-origin gasoline and diesel IMNSHO.
================================================
Some thoughts on using cellulose to produce ethanol...
As a feedstock for ethanol production. First off, if that ever takes off, it will be grass, not wood, that is used; it's easier to harvest, and to process.
I worked for a while at a research lab that was working in this area; along with my ethanol plant (2 different production plants) experience, that is where I acquired the info I will pass on to you here.
Cellulose conversion to glucose takes 3 enzymes to do it. All 3 are expensive, and relatively fussy about handling. Worse, each one does little or nothing to make the reaction easier for subsequent enzyme treatment. By comparison, current enzymatic starch conversion involves only two relatively cheap enzymes, one of which is not that particular about pH, and the first one measureably aids the action of the second one.
You have another set of problems with cellulose fermentation. First, half the sugars are pentoses (5-carbon sugars), which yeast can't metabolize. By comparison, all the sugars in starch are hexoses (6-carbon sugars), which yeast uses just fine. You have to get them out of the mash, or they will caramelize in the distillation towers. You also don't want to waste half of your feedstock. So what you do is use bacteria. Problem is, those die out around 5% ethanol concentration v/v, where yeast goes 11 - 16 %. This is a big deal not only because you are able to produce much more product with the same equipment if the beer (finished mash going to distillation) is higher concentration, but because your energy costs are far higher if the beer is less than half as concentrated in ethanol.
Then, to top it all off, bacteria has a food value for animal feed that is much lower than is spent yeast; under 1/5, if memory serves.
The point that makes cellulose conversion worth pursuing is that only then will ethanol production be potentially able to have the volume to replace gasoline. You just can't make enough of it from grain to matter much, even if the petroleum inputs to growing the grain weren't another issue.
================================================
The practicality of ethanol as a replacement for gasoline is IMNSHO mainly dependent upon whether or not an economic method for using cellulosic feedstocks as the sugar source for the fermenting organism is developed. Yes, using starches for the input in ethanol plants is nuts, and there won't be a significant surplus of them once petroleum supplies drop off most of the way. However, if cellulose can be used, then yes you can produce some serious quantities of fuel, even in a post-petroleum economy.
Note that ethanol is NOT a substitute for diesel fuel, nor is it universally useful; its MPG is around half that of gasoline, and it is a pain to use at temps under 45 degrees F. Less pollution from vehicles that run on it (vs. gasoline) by far though, and bacteria rapidly digest spilled ethanol.
I also do not agree that growing crops, even just forage crops, inevitably and irreversably mines/degrades the soil. Land can be improved by cultivation, even without major fertilizer inputs. (Material that adds available nitrogen is the vast majority of fertilizer by weight currently.) Crops like legumes and alfalfa/clover improve its nitrogen content, and various established soil management practices can up the activity of nitrogen-fixing bacteria in soil by 20x or more. The gardening/farming hobbyists can add far more to this last than I can.
==================================================
About ethanol as a substitute fuel for internal combustion engines... It can't be made in sufficient volume until the problems with using cellulose as the feedstock are solved. It takes 3 expensive enzymes to break down cellulose, and none of them make access easier for the others (unlike when starch is used as the feedstock).
Also, half the sugars produced (5-carbon sugars) from cellulose conversion are only practicably used by bacteria, which putt out at about 5% alcohol final content, whereas fementation by yeast on media derived from starch (all 6-carbon sugars) goes to 11% in so-so alcohol manufacturing plants, and 16% or so in the better ones. This is critical because the energy needed to distill the ethanol will be much higher for cellulose-source facilities, and distillation is a major operating cost for fuel ethanol production.
It is not OK to just leave the 5-carbon sugars (pentoses) unused and use yeast to ferment what 6-carbon sugars (hexoses, like maltose/gluconse/fructose/sucrose) are available, as they inhibit the yeast and caramelize in the distillation columns.
At any rate, using ethanol as a gasoline substitute in quantity has some MAJOR technical impediments before it can become a reality.

PA Ruck: not too likely due to distance (mainly the expense when I'm not yet working and savings are hard-hit by recent thruhike), sad to say. I'm going back and forth between NW FL and Atlanta during this time in my life (between thruhike end and return to employment). Certainly, I would love to go, with all the trail friends that would likely be there.
Southern Ruck depends solely on whether I have work by then; if not, I definitely intend to go.

As of 1/3/07, the count of blessed recipients is up to (from just The Thread as info source):
Matthewski
Mother's Finest
Lone Wolf
Darwin again
SteveM (Thank you for the fridge honor, BTW.)
Anyone else yet?
I've got a third wave of cards going out tomorrow. (Several are going out to places at which I was judged not likely to finish. :D ) I still need to find mailing addresses for the Murray place, Woodshole hostel, the YMCA camp on p. 134 of Wingfoot, Graymoor, and the couple next door to Friendly's Burgers in Bennington, VT.

Step right up, line on the right for those wanting to put "The Thread Killers" in the February sponsorship block. Just five with ten will getcha going, ten with five gets yah the same. Step right up, any comination will getcha on the board, three shots for a dollar winyah bear for the little lady.
Line forms on the left, way over there on the left, for those who'd like to list how much better uses they have for their money. They can't contribute to W-B right now because they're having tea with Mother Teresa and they give to this charity and that charity to save the world from ... developers or childhood diseases, they give all their money to the home for aging Shriner clowns, gout research, or electing gay whales to Congress. Some, very few, maybe one, maybe two might actually think they can shame me. Step right up and take your best shot. The winning essay may get their charity on my sponsorship block if nobody can scrounge enough to top my W-B donation.
Step right up. Three shots a dollar to dunk the clown in the water.

minnesota smith thruhikes the appalachian trail in just over 9 months.
analysis:ms was overweight and out of shape. he started in georgia with too much equiptment and quickly and steadely droped both body weight and packweight. his hiking proweless increassed as time passed leaving him at the finnish , a consumate hiker and ablebodyed camper and exsperienced hitcher and a resupplyer extrodinaire. his support team had alot more to do with his succes. the constant talk of his hike in media and hiking circles enhanced this shy mans image of himself and once again we see how important self image is to confedence. his body and mind and support team all became strong as they were needed most. his ability to suffer lonelyness seemed to out score the stats for most folks and he complained about lonlyness very little. this may have been due to the large support team or to his own personal spirit. it has been sugested ms cheated and skipped lonly sections and stayed in hotels without reporting such moves. this is beyond ms's ability to be corrupt. he demonstraited old fashoned honesty and was a boon for the trails reputation if not one to his own. and as he came closer to his goal he showed just a christian bit of dissinterest in the ney saying and moved it would seem to a more secure spiritual fortress. here he remains to this day changed by his trip and by our beloved trail. in conclution, it can be said with accuresy, minnesota smith hiked the trail in the hike your own hike fashion as demonstrated by all the greats from granny to earl, from pirate to lonewolf, from blisteh to gorpy, and he is forever included in the list of folks from whom we choose to teach lessons to the young about this thing we call trash.
The Trail kicked his arse and now it's the volunteer maintainers fault that it was such a struggle for him.....whine, whine, whine.
This all reminds me of the 2000 elections. Done, but not over. Is that the Supreme Court waiting with a newly polished gavel to finish this whole affair?
Will MS grow a beard, accept a teaching job and write a book on global warming?
A gory end, indeed.

minnesota smith represents a small thing god raised up . and the anger and critisizm the threadsters dished out was a testiment to gods advise, "take the beam out of your eye so you can then see clearly to remove the spinter from anothers eye"and," when they curse you for loving god, take it as meat" and anyone who thinks im quoting the bible, im paraphraseing. and im not prostelatizing, im trying to exsplain in my way of thinking, what has transpired here during, before and after, ms hiked the trail.i think ms represents truth and many were offended and unable to enjoy and some were driven over a cliff like swine released into hell by god.the truth is like unto a two edge sword, able to seperate even sinue from bone. the truth about ms is that he wasnt going to listen to anyone anyhow. and he was flexible and had the resourses to learn what and when and from where or who he chose.and his education shows just that type of bent . his bent is an honest godly one. its offence is the same stench that jesus is to all who denie him. he stinks if you dont belive in him. jesus and ms.and to belive in another human being cant quite compare to belife in god, to belive in ms is to allow him space to grow and not feel threatened and to be open to the idea that you can learn something from anything.ms isnt a god, not a thruhiking one even. hes a regular man . who just hapens to also searve as a little mirror reflecting even a morsil of gods light off his heart and into the world. i made a leap of judgement at the start of this year by supporting ms ,"all in." and now at the beginning of this year 2007 i will make another leap. one of faith. when i tell you this.
luke will grow into something along the lines of a layed back pipe smokin professor everyone loves and he will write books and he will be one of the minds of our times. and his veiws of the world will turn and come around a few times before settleing on a bent not all can live with, and love, but respect.

the accepted smithian way of doing things. aminnesota smithlike approch. the ms of packs. dont give me any ms. are yall ms'n me? if minnesota smith can,.... smith, minnesota smith. now you sound like minnesota smith. oi,minnesota smith. a minnesota minute is defined by the time needed to walk a mile while sleepwalking. a minnesota mile is the breath of chasim bettween two political opposites. a minnesota morning is another word for zero. moderatly minnesotalike milage is a nero. when one hiker askes another for some minnesota, there asking to borrow toilet paper. a red circle with a line thru it on a diaganal over a picture of a hiker wearing an anvil means , minnesota smith crossing. a circle with a line thru it over a picture of a roll of toilet paper means watch for aggressive ms.mess or messy are endearing nicknames for ms. according to the atomic weights chart, the element ms has the property "reverse chick magnetism". the idea that ms can be exsplained by the splinter group branched from ausriolopithicus have been debunked . ms is actually related to deep ocen lava tube feeding alge. and finnaly folks, a red circle with a line thru it on a diagnal over a picture of jim morrison with the letters ms, means ms is not jim morrison.

This is the end
Beautiful friend
This is the end
My only friend, the end
Of our elaborate plans, the end
Of everything that stands, the end
No safety or surprise, the end
Ill never look into your eyes...again
Can you picture what will be
So limitless and free
Desperately in need...of some...strangers hand
In a...desperate land
Lost in a roman...wilderness of pain
And all the children are insane
All the children are insane
Waiting for the summer rain, yeah
Theres danger on the edge of town
Ride the kings highway, baby
Weird scenes inside the gold mine
Ride the highway west, baby
Ride the snake, ride the snake
To the lake, the ancient lake, baby
The snake is long, seven miles
Ride the snake...hes old, and his skin is cold
The west is the best
The west is the best
Get here, and well do the rest
The blue bus is callin us
The blue bus is callin us
Driver, where you taken us
The killer awoke before dawn, he put his boots on
He took a face from the ancient gallery
And he walked on down the hall
He went into the room where his sister lived, and...then he
Paid a visit to his brother, and then he
He walked on down the hall, and
And he came to a door...and he looked inside
Father, yes son, I want to kill you
Mother...i want to...
Cmon baby, take a chance with us
Cmon baby, take a chance with us
Cmon baby, take a chance with us
And meet me at the back of the blue bus
Doin a blue rock
On a blue bus
Doin a blue rock
Cmon, yeah
