Always good to hear from devolving sub-species.;)

So assuming you can grasp the simple concept of MPD and distance to Katahdin, what was wrong about posting the fact that your love interest is going about half the speed of other hikers? Also your getting in a tizzy because I reported what others think of the person you blindly worship doesn't affect their view of him one whit.

Herr Neandertal bloviates again.
Blah, blah-blah, blah, blah.
Happy-happy, joy-joy.

So, I guess SOMEBODY is doing mileage spreadsheets on old MS. Show us you math, oh great one. Please include start date versus mileage to Kent with an average othereof. Average mileage through the Whites does not a hike make, oh blowhard genuis.
Show us the math...unless you're skeered. Bawk! Bawk!:D

Then how, paradoxically, can we be talking about MS? :-?Not bad. On topic. Concise. Extra points for polysyllabalicism. I'll give it 6.2 out of 10.

Actually, Darwin, O.F. has raised a perfectly legitimate point.

There are something like 298 miles between Gorham and Katahdin.

If Smith manages to hike at 10 miles a day (which I don't believe is possible for him in Maine), it'll take him 30 days to get to Katahdin.

If he hikes at 8 miles a day, he won't get there til AFTER 15 October.

If he stays at 6 MPD, then it'll take him fifty days to finish, i.e. around 1 November, as O.F. said.

Anyone who told Smith, or led him to believe that it's about to get easier for him either doesn't know what they're talking about, or more likely, has never hiked southern Maine. The Gorham to Andover stretch contains some of the hardest mileage of the entire Trail, and will in all likelihood, take him around a week to complete, and perhaps more.

Don't get me wrong, I'm NOT saying he won't finish. However, it's going to be very difficult for him to do so, and frankly, I'll be very surprised if he gets
to Katahdin by the fifteenth.

As to O.F.'s other comments which Darwin termed "incoherent, negative, rotten-spirited, bitter, arrogant", well I entertained around 150 hikers at my place in Hanover the past few weeks, most of whom knew or had met Smith.

Nearly all of them agreed with the hikers O.F. quoted. He ain't exactly popular with his peers.

That being said, I myself wish him well, I believe he's still capable of completing his trip, and I hope he's willing to do what's necessary, even if it means a cold, late finish.

Time will tell, but right now, time is not his friend.

Darwin Again-"Show us you math, oh great one."All the info is right in this thread, sorry you can't do the simple math. Have someone show you how to figure when he arrived in Hanover and when he arrived in Gorham by actually reading this thread.

Darwin Again-"Average mileage through the Whites does not a hike make,..." One of the more brilliant things you've said, almost makes it up to inane! Apparently you aren't familiar with the A.T. or you'd know the Whites are just the warm-up for Maine. Ask any hiker.

Darwin Ad Nauseam-"Show us the math...unless you're skeered. Bawk! Bawk!"You're making those strange noises again. Either your medication has worn off or you're going to challange me to another duel.:p I thought your keeper told you to chill out.:D

And then he gets a brief respite before tackling Rangeley>Stratton. That section kicked my azz--twice! Hard to say which section is tougher, they both are, but I don't see MS doing much more than a half-dozen MPD through most of it once you factor in zeroes and weather.

Don't you think MS would be wise to go to Monson once he does reach Andover, hike north and get the Wilderness and BSP done before he does anything else? He could then come back and go do Andover>Monson.

He already has one hole to fill between Kent and Gorham, what's another one?

Nearly all of them agreed with the hikers O.F. quoted. He ain't exactly popular with his peers.

Hedging your your bets, Jack? "He might still make it..."

I was anticipating the "incoherent, negative, rotten-spirited, bitter, arrogant" reply which did materialize. The Old Flatus is as predictable as a broken clock.

Every thru hiker I met this season who talked about M.Smith had something negative to say about him. But note that Smith is only irksome if you take his ideas seriously, which means legitimizing them with your indignation, as if they really matter in the big scheme of things.

I don't worry that Smith is going to usurp my belief systems or steal my women or overthrow my government if he says something poor little me might not like or agree with. To me, he's no different than the rest of the big-headed comic book characters (we all know who they are) who occupy the Trail and take themselves so seriously as to pass judgment on other hikers. At least MS is interesting to talk to, unlike other boors who make sport out of tossing rhetorical rocks at others. I don't have a political/social/groupthink/educational litmus test for the hikers I meet or help. Remember that MS is out doing something he loves to do, just like we all love it. We share that love with him. Give him his due as a hiker. You don't even have to love him, but like it or not, he's one of us.

And if you think MS cares if people like him or not, you're missing the point completely.

Playing right to the lowest-common-denominator crowd opinion, ie. "OF is right! Nobody much likes him so we don't neither! ARGH, AT pirates are WE!" is a baldly political, crowd-pleasing act. It's also very similar to the way Bryson played to the gallery in his book making hikers look like goofs. He distanced himself from the hiking crowd just like the crowd now appears to be distancing itself from Smith. Just too much.

My best friend got killed last two Fridays ago, so after a week of dealing with the funeral, burial and associated festivities, I'm running a bit hot.:sun

Peace or KMA, take your pick.

Skyline--

If he wants to finish before 15 October, this is EXACTLY what he should do, especially if it takes him eight or nine days to get from Gorham to Andover, as I suspect it will.

Jumping to Monson from either Andover (or perhaps Stratton) and then filling in the odd bits after he's done with Baxter would be the wisest thing for him.
Their are plenty of local shuttlers and/or hostel owners who can help him out.
(The sections he'd be skipping are nothing to sneer at, by the way, so if he does come back to tackle Saddleback, the Bigelows, etc. in early or mid-October, I hope he brings some company along. I've been thru there in October, and it can get pretty dicey late in the season).

Climbing Katahdin after 15 October can certainly be done, but it's kind of a pain in the ass, never mind risky as far as weather goes. I know people who have finished as late as 1 November, and their Katahdin summit shots look like Scott of the Antarctic.

In my opinion, thisis NOT the way he should plan on ending his trip.

Darwin:

Sorry to hear about your friend.

In re. to your question, no, I'm not hedging my bets, but then I never had a bet going in the first place. I seem to recall WAAAAAY back when, in the early days of this thread, that I commented that folks who were betting on Smitty's chances were doing something pretty tacky.

So I have no bet to hedge.

What I was saying is that his mileage has deteriorated as he's gotten further north, and he's running out of time. He also has recurrent health issues, and he really can't afford to take any extra time off if he falls ill again.

Do I think he can still finish the trip this year? Yes, but I don't think he'll make it to Katahdin by the 15th. He'll either have to finish after that date, or more likely, skip a chunk of Maine and come back to fill it in later.

Also, since you seem to concur with me about how Smitty's viewed by his peers, then I think your comments to O.F. were a bit over the top.

And please don't include me in the group that doesn't like him. Unlike most of the folks on this thread, I've met with him (several times during his journey), have talked with him, had a drink with him (!!), gone thru his gear at his request, entertained him in my home, fed him at hiker events, and have actually gotten to know him quite well. I've always wished him well on his trip and I truly hope he completes it.

That being said, I'm also aware of how he's viewed by many of his contemporaries.

But you're right, Smitty goes his own way, speaks his own mind, and is willing to live with the consequences. I certainly don't agree with everything he's said and written before and during his hike, but I respect him for doing things his way, saying what he thinks, and to hell with the consequences.

Truly, I'm looking forward to his completing the trip. It'll make a lot of armchair experts---most of whom haven't thru-hiked and probably never will----eat crow, and this is not a bad thing at all.

I was under the impression that after October 15, or whenever they declare Winter in a particular year, that BSP will not allow anyone to climb Katahdin unless they are a group (of four or so, I recall), have convinced BSP rangers they have exemplary winter summitting skills, and have certain winter gear. Is this true, and if not, do you know what kind of post-Oct. 15 policies there are in BSP re: Katahdin?

Given your correct assessments of Saddleback, Bigelows, etc. it does indeed seem like with every passing day MS' options get narrower and that he will need some luck in the Weather Dept. That he has alienated so many before and during his hike doesn't bode well for potential hiking partners either.

Maybe he should just go and get K out of the way now, come back and do the most challenging sections next, then fill in the rest at his "leisure" between then and New Year's Eve. :-)

Of course, if it was me I'd be going back next year to complete the AT, but I was never obsessed with calendar years.

By now, our man Minnesota knows the Trail isn't as difficult as various people claim. Everyone's perspective is bent to suit their agendas. Those doomsayers probably watch lots of TeeVee news and believe anything they see or read. (Remember how various expert commentators claimed MS wouldn't get out of Georgia?) Chattahoochie? Check. Nantahala? Check. Cherokee? Check. George Washington? Check. Smokies? Check. Harpers? Check. Shennies? Check. Rocksyltucky? Check. Bear Mountain? Check. Whites? Check. Carters and Wildcats? Check. Mahoosic? Coming right up...

He isn't buying the hype anymore, just walking his walk. He knows he's a free man, unafraid. Some people don't even know they are free and want to keep others down in the gutter with them, fettered by fear. Smith is now immune to the defeatist, whining talk.

The gravitational force of Big K is pulling him northward.

Actually, while I suspect he'll complete all his fill-in miles, well before then, he can still finish after 1 January. After all quite a few Southboundrs don't finish til after New Year's Day. A thru-hike is one (reasonably) continuous, uninterrupted traverse of the A.T.; it doesn't necessarily have to be contained in one specific year. It is the continuity of the journey that matters, and except for short breaks, Smith's hike certainly qualifies as a thru, even if it extends into 2007.

What is the "point of no return", so to speak? Where do hikers have their last chance of skipping forward to summit before they get into an area where that option is either impractical or unavailable to them?

The only thing that happens on October 15 is the closing of the campground, which greatly complicates the logistics of summiting.

You essentially have to stay outside the park, where accomodations are few, and arrange for transportation in each morning until a good day arrives that persuades the rangers to open the trail.

Winter rules don't kick in until Dec. 1. After that date MS's chances of summitting while obeying the rules are slim to non existent.

But usually there are spots of good weather through early November that allow a summit attempt. The mountain doesn't finally shut down to day hikes until permanent snow conditions arrive which can be as early as September 15, but rarely.

Aus:

It depends on a few factors, such as the health/conditioning of the hiker; their hiking pace; how much time they plan to take off; and especially, the weather.

In terms of when it's "too late" to flip, I personally wouldn't want to be in the White Mountains after mid-October, and nobody should consider being there anytime after 1 October unless they have appropriate gear, clothing, and experience.

As far as difficulty of terrain, the toughest part of Maine is the stretch from Gorham to Andover. It's only just over 40 miles, but can be a real beast in bad weather. I've been thru Mahoosuc Notch in the rain and it ain't a whole lot of fun. I wouldn't wanna be here in mid or late October (or later) unless I was sure the weather was going to be great.

Andover to Stratton is almost as tough, and the Stratton to Caratunk section is as well, at least the first half is. Avery Pnorth of Stratton is utterly miserable when it's wet and cold.

Caratunk to Monson is much easier, and while the first few days north of Monson are pretty solid, around the last 50 miles before you get to Baxter is pretty much flat.

All that being said, hiking New Hampshire late is probably more difficult than most of Maine. If one were going to skip or flip-flop, I'd definitely try and get thru the Whites BEFORE doing so, and hopefully, get as far as Andover. Maine can certainly be done in mid to late October or even later, tho one has a great chance of encountering rough weather in the higher peaks, and when it's cold and wet, such places as the Mahoosucs, Old Speck, Baldpate, Saddleback, the Crockers, Avery Peak and the Bigelows, and Whitecap can be very tough.

Bottom line is you can flip or skip as far North as you want, but I'd try real hard to get New Hampshire finished FIRST, and I'd be prepared for some rough days in the higher parts of Maine if you're gona be hiking after the middle of October. If you expect to be out til November or afterwards, plan on winter weather and conditions in the higher elevations.

(Lastly, parts of Vermont can be interesting if you end up doing them in October or later; southern Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and points south can be hiked well into the autumn or even early winter, so folks who've by-passed these sections to be hiked later will be fine, other than putting up with some cold and wet. Other than at the highest points, like Greylock for example, southern new England doesn't see much snow before December).

One can actually get off the Trail NORTH of Monson and get up to Baxter, tho it's kind of a pain in the ass, especially if you're paying shuttle fees. At least one of these roads is privately owned, so user fees will be charged.

Anyone contemplating "jumping ahead" this late in the game would probably be better off to do it no later than Monson, as it's on a major road, there are hiker facilites there, local shuttlers, safe places to leave vehicles, etc.

Matthewski sir, I was serious about the fried bologna sandwiches. Sliced very thick, fried German bologna samiches served on hot home made pumperknickel bread. Yes I will ship it to you if I have to. I am assuming Mr. Smith will be coming to the Gathering. I will have one with his name on it too. He gets Cognac with his.

Well, I guess that all goes as to how you define politics. MS has told people he's on the trail to audition a wife even though no woman can stand him and few, if any, women on the trail wear the prerequisite dress
"

I kin probably fix him up with a Skidder Gal or two to interview when he gets to either Rangely or Bigelow. If they get advance notice they will wear their dresses and have their teeth in;)

Agreed, but I was considering post Whitehouse opportunities for Bush and Cheney. Unlike Bill Clinton, the "speechifyin" bidness may not be available to Bush. Cheney may have some some limited success as a quail hunting instructor/consultant/guide.

Hillary Clinton has done well in her acting career after leaving the Oval Office. Maybe Bush and Cheney could follow her lead.

Aus--

One can actually get off the Trail NORTH of Monson and get up to Baxter, tho it's kind of a pain in the ass, especially if you're paying shuttle fees. At least one of these roads is privately owned, so user fees will be charged.

Anyone contemplating "jumping ahead" this late in the game would probably be better off to do it no later than Monson, as it's on a major road, there are hiker facilites there, local shuttlers, safe places to leave vehicles, etc.

Thanks for the info, Jack. It seems there is much more talk about the Southern part of the trail here on WB. It is good to get the details from one of few that live that far up the trail.

I have family just north of Hartford Ct. and will be stretching the time out up there between the trail and two or three weeks of zeros visiting them. This is the part of the trail that I really need to try have some sort of plan to make it work.

As public service to The Thread, I attempted to retreive MS's shelter register entry from the Paul Wolfe Shelter this afternoon.

It appears that a certain Mister Wolf had already been called to go down to the shelter, clean up the blood and brain matter that is the inevitable result of MS's incendiary prosody, and then make the register in question "disappear." It was disappeared, "replaced" by one beginning some time in July.

In keeping with the tradition of whacked and disturbed karma that flows magically from MS's perambulations (the gentle reader mustn't forget my first adventure with him in which he locked my car keys securely into the trunk of my car in the parking lot of the Waynesboro, Va., Wally World), I decided to bushwack up the streambed from the shelter to the Blue Ridge Parkway. That was Mistake number Two (the first having been going there in the first place, despite my being in dire need of an AT fix.). No matter what I did or how I stacked it, the dog and I needed to go back up the 1,000 or so feet to the Humpback parking area I had descended to the Shelter. What goes up must come down. A fool and his gravity are soon parted, etc.

After letting the dog get a good drink from the stream (this ferocious animal of mine being kept on an "overly long leash" so that she might attack, bite and kill Minnesota Smith should we miraculously come upon him, even in spirit, we proceeded to bushwack up to the parkway via every massive undisturbed spiderweb possible and along an old ATV track that ran back and forth across muddy seeps. After two hours, we were back at the car, mudded, tired, and alas, all for naught. I really wanted to post that entry here, merely as a tertiary, supplemental item of interest.

Here are some of the comments he has made directly to women hikers.
"You're too fat to hike the trail" Reply-"I may be fat but I'm passing you!"
"You're 27 and too old to be of any biological significance to me."
“Hi, I’m Minnesota Smith, you probably have heard of me. You can tell me your name but I’ll forget it right away.”The first one really bothers me. That just doesn't sound like MS. I'm not questioning your reporting, Mr. Fhart. A hiker told this to you and we all know that hikers never exaggerate, embellish, nor embroider stories about their experiences on the Trail. But it just doesn't feel right. It's missing context, you know? He may have meant it as a joke as in "I'm sure you've heard this one before because I sure have!" I don't know but as they say in Texas, that story just doesn't sit right.

The second one, yeah! That's our guy! Still playing hard-to-get and driving all the women wild.

The third one, yeah, probably. But he didn't mean any harm, it was more of a warning; sort of a 'heads up'. He is a bit absent-minded. Can I get a witness to that, Darwin again?

Amen, brother Mouse.

I'd like to know the sourcing on these "quotes." Who told them to whom, when, where, and how. Looks like a bad case of gossipy hearsay. At first blush, they seem over the top, but when you imagine MS saying them, they just seem, well, unremarkable. So he tells the truth as he sees it. Nobody, including MS himself, ever claimed MS was a social butterfly. MS is like Shotgun Dick accidentally shooting someone in the face on a hunting trip -- he don't mean no harm and you don't have to hunt with him if you don't want to, based on his, um, history.

It's just a little verbal birdshot.;) Don't hate me because I'm truthiful.

Actually if the first half of that were true, the second half would have MS with no feet!

As to the 3 posted comments I heard directly from the female hikers MS said them to, he is masogonistically (Alligator- does that word qualify for points?) enhanced and anyone here has seen him post similar statements time after time . Didn't someone a few pages back state that his views on women were more extreme than the Taliban's?

Of all the coments about MS I heard from the 13 hikers I saw that weekend, those were the only ones I could post here without violating the rules.

As incoherant as usual, Ole Flatus. So it's direct heresay. You've been playing Appalachian Trail post office and spreading the gossip on the Internets, and we're supposed to trust you, an MS detractor from the get-go. EXCELLENT!
(But you're probably right about the above, that Shotgun Dick shot the man on purpose, not accidentally. Just to watch him lie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8MRA22y26Fk).)

According to my rubidium dictionary, the word is: misogynistically.
Maybe he's enhanced in other, more important ways and that's what sent the ladies packing in panic? Ever think of THAT?

MS is allegedly seeking a healthy female of breeding age, not more than 27 years old. Anything is possible. (http://modifiedliving.com/amishporn.htm)
Above site is paraody. But this (http://articles.news.aol.com/news/_a/dance-of-diplomacy-is-grist-for-the/20060913092909990001) isn't, which just goes to show you that anything is possible in the animal kingdom.

The Old Fhart(post 1782)-Here are some of the comments he has made directly to women hikers.
"You're too fat to hike the trail" Reply-"I may be fat but I'm passing you!"
"You're 27 and too old to be of any biological significance to me."
“Hi, I’m Minnesota Smith, you probably have heard of me. You can tell me your name but I’ll forget it right away.”

DWM-"The first one really bothers me. That just doesn't sound like MS. I'm not questioning your reporting, Mr. Fhart. A hiker told this to you and we all know that hikers never exaggerate, embellish, nor embroider stories about their experiences on the Trail. But it just doesn't feel right. It's missing context, you know? He may have meant it as a joke as in "I'm sure you've heard this one before because I sure have!" I don't know but as they say in Texas, that story just doesn't sit right."
Darwin Again-"I'd like to know the sourcing on these "quotes." Who told them to whom, when, where, and how. Looks like a bad case of gossipy hearsay. At first blush, they seem over the top, but when you imagine MS saying them, they just seem, well, unremarkable."
mweinstone-"the old fart your a lier."
It seems MinnesotaSmith does actually insult everyone he meets. Here is what some visiting Australians report firsthand. Check here. (http://eggswithlegs.blogspot.com/2006/06/pearisburg.html)

Just as we were putting our clothes in the dryer, another hiker entered. He could best be described as looking like a cross between Louie the Fly and Franklin the Turtle. He was a large man who wore thick glasses and walked with a hunched back. He introduced himself as Minnesota Smith. For the first 20 mins of conversation he had us in stitches as he related his trail journey so far. Then halfway through our drying cycle, he asked us the loaded question, "What do you guys do?" We explained that we'd finished university and were avoiding getting a real job. Then he focused on Zan, "So what are you planning to do with your degree? Become a housewife?" Thinking he was joking, we both laughed as Zan replied, "Maybe a school teacher." Then he launched into his well rehearsed monologue, "The only true profession that a woman needs to fulfill is to have babies. The Muslims are outbreeding us and the only way to keep this country pure is to have more babies than them." We prayed that our washing would dry quickly as he kept speaking, "Married women should not get the vote because they are going to vote for whoever their husband tells them to anyway. I'm not saying that women can't have a career. Once they're done having babies... Say when they're 40 or so, their husband can support them if they choose to go to college or do something else." We took our still damp clothes, said our goodbyes and were glad that he wasn't going back for trail days."
Still think he's just joking?:D

Still think he's just joking?:D

He insulted me before he was in my car for ten minutes when he asked if I had any friends or relatives of a certain ethnicity. He was prepping to tell a joke. When I replied in the affirmative, he wisely demurred. He was also expressing his concerns that non-white skinned folks were going to come and take all of us white-skinned folks' houses and women and stuff. I told him to look around my neighborhood for a minute and notice the distinctive lack of non-white marauders. Then he said colleges shouldn't teach liberal arts subjects, just hard subjects. I told him I had a drgree in englich and asked him who would enforce this educational policy? The government?
and that was just the tip of the iceberg, so don't tell me about MS's rhetorical proclivities.

The boy just can't help himself!
So get over it. KWIT CHER WHININ ALREADY!
So much indignation coming from a TRAIL GOSSIP.

...
On-topic personal attacks are acceptable on The Thread only if they display originality. Insults based on religious beliefs, gender or implications about sexual orientation, bodily functions, perceived degree of intelligence, life experiences, trail name, and educational or professional attainments are guaranteed low marks from our panel of experts.

Always Remember: This is The Thread and we have standards.
I found that masogonistically was a quite original combination of masochistic and antagonistic, whether intended or not, with suitable application to MS. The 9.0 stands, any appeals must be in triplicate and forwarded by snail mail to the Chair.

but everyone here seems to be talking about a guy who does not appear to have much "understanding and acceptance of all living things" and for his public statements he has been judged. Mr. Boagus gets it. We've been discussing the progress of a hiker.

But not just any hiker. We're talking about one who
- started in poor physical shape for long distance hiking,
- asked for and received much advice about gear then ignored most of it.
(Sure, he's got lightweight camping equipment: A ton of it!)
- started at the worst possible time of year,
- has chosen to alienate himself from many other hikers.

Yet despite what many knowledgeable and experienced hikers would consider poor conditioning, preparation for, and even execution of his hike he's stayed on the Trail longer than any other hiker this year and he still has a good chance to finish a thru-hike while most others have already dropped out.

The point everyone is missing is how someone with all these self-imposed handicaps nearly completed a thru-hike while so many seemingly better prepared hikers haven't?

DWM- MS didn't insult the Aussies. I mean, besides insulting their intelligence....

The Muslims are outbreeding us and the only way to keep this country pure is to have more babies than them........."

Seeing that he directly questioned Zan and his reply was directed to Zan, the only conclusion is that it was a direct insult.

thanks to Neo's initial link to Turtle 2's trail journal, I have been reading her journal as she has progressed. about a month ago she skipped ahead and summitted and is now sobo'ing until she gets to where she skipped ahead.

anyway, here is a part of a recent entry in her trail journal:
http://trailjournals.com/entry.cfm?id=156845

There were over 10 hikers here last night, some tenting nearby including Mr. Blister. One trail celebrity staying here was the one and only Minnesota Smith. MS carries 60 #s and double filters his water and imports some of his food including dried squid. He gave a brief geology talk then discussed thru-hiking with the guests while the rest of the hikers looked on. He did a good job.
The noted encounter took place on Friday, September 1 at Galehead Hut.
