Fiddler 02-22-2006, 12:00 I found someone selling down on the internet, they do not use the fill power rating, but they say this: "10/90 down to feather ratio" can you translate that to fill power? 10/90 down to feather is 10 percent down, 90 percent feathers. 60/40 down to feather would be 60 percent down, 40 percent feathers. You want 100 percent down. Don't get anything with any ratio in it. infochuck 02-22-2006, 12:08 Sorry, to 'bust you out', but anybody claiming to be able to sell you 100% down is lying. Sorry, but that's the truth. All down has some feather content in it - even the best down you can buy will have 5-8% feather content. Period. Unless, perhaps, it's been hand-processed, which would raise the price to levels that are economically unfeasible. Do NOT go by percentage of down/feather - 95/5% down/feather can range GREATLY in fill power, which IS the single most important piece of info. Also, don't just take their word for it - ask for a copy of independent certification of claimed fill power. timhines 02-22-2006, 12:22 that's the thing, they dont' have a fill power rating. So i'm guessing that according to what you guys have said I should not buy any 10/90 down to feather ratio? peter_pan 02-22-2006, 14:32 Short answer is that should be about 730 fp. The IDFL has all you want to know about down...here is the page on % and fps...http://www.idfl.com/articles/Down%20Content%20and%20Fill%20Power.pdf Enjoy. Based on the information provided, there is no way discern fill power. timhines 02-22-2006, 18:38 so is $12 per lb a good deal on 730 fp? after i give the little one a bath i'll read up on that page you guys suggested. Thanks all hammock engineer 02-22-2006, 20:45 so is $12 per lb a good deal on 730 fp? after i give the little one a bath i'll read up on that page you guys suggested. Thanks all To good to be true. But if not, let us know. Here is a site I found the best deal on, have not ordered yet. You can find higher fills (800 or 900), but this is the cheapest I found. $138 for 2.2 lbs of 750 fill. To me the cost for the higher fills was not worth a couple of ozs. http://www.hungariangoosedown.com/bulkb.htm infochuck 02-23-2006, 09:15 Tim - at $12/pound, you're getting feathers. Unless you're buying dozens of pounds at a time, anyone offering it at less than 3 or 4 dollars per OUNCE ($48 to $64 per pound) is NOT offering you anything better than 500-600 Fill Power, and probably not even close to that. timhines 02-23-2006, 11:00 You are right, it was actually 90% feathers and 10% down. That would be useless to use as insulation. |
