View Full Version : Unicoi to Standing Indian campground
bigkingtut 02-26-2006, 02:50 I have from Unicoi to Bly Gap left to finish my GA section hike. I lost all my trail maps and guides due to water damage,so,I need some help from you folks. Can a hike from unicoi to Dicks Creek Gap be completed in a day?How many hours would it take? How far is Bly from Dicks Creek?
I would like to also start my NC section hike,so I can I get off the NC trailn before Standing Indian Campground? I'm planning on bringing my wife with me.She can not hike,so planning on doing a section, spend time with her, then next morning back on trail into NC,spend night if I had to,then off the trail somewhere in NC before the campground...
I will only have 3 days to spend on trail as we will be driving in from TX. Planning on doing this sometime in April. Can anyone assist with info,or point me in the right direction

We hiked from Dick's Creek Gap to Unicoi Gap in one day. Left at 6 AM, reached Unicoi Gap at 4 PM. Your mileage may vary.
Bly Gap is about 9 miles south of Dick's Creek Gap (there's no road access at Bly Gap). Then it's another 7 miles to Deep Gap. From Deep Gap you can take the blue-blazed Kimsey Creek Trail about 4 miles to Standing Indian Campground (this cuts off a big loop of the AT). If you spent the night on the trail (at the Muskrat Creek Shelter, for example, about 4 miles beyond Bly Gap), you could easily reach Standing Indian the next day. Deep Gap is accessible by car, but it's a little tricky to find. We hiked from Deep Gap to Dick's Creek Gap, leaving at 6:20 AM, finishing at 4 PM. The Deep Gap trail crossing is a little tricky to find. The following is from my journal of the day, which may help you find it:
---------------
"We head up to find the road to Deep Gap (Maurice had scouted it out the previous day). It's a bit longer than we expect. About 22 miles from the motel, [in Hiawassee] and not quite 14 miles from the 175-64 intersection (and a little under 5 miles west of Winding Stair Gap). The brown Deep Gap sign is well-back from the highway, but we do see the road and head up it. Paved (though potholed) for the first half mile, then single-lane dirt. Not as good as the Springer Mountain road, but passable (and shorter). I start looking for the place where I followed this road on foot in May (by mistake) looking for the Kimsey Creek Trail, and at last see the turnoff of the gated road that I took, and in less than a mile from there we are at the parking lot. A Catera is parked there, overnight.
I put on my headlamp and off we go (the others are sure that we're going the wrong direction, but I recognize the terrain from being there in May, and sure enough, there is a "S" on the post marking the AT heading south.
We begin a steady climb at about 6:20, and it's soon light."

generoll 02-26-2006, 08:51 I think that travelwise, Bly Gap is North of Dicks Creek Gap. If you are headed from Springer to Katahdin, you will go from Dicks Creek to Bly in that order. Some have hiked from Unicoi to Dicks Creek in a day. I think they usually are not carrying full packs (no need to of course) and have to move pretty good. It's just a hair over 16 miles, so you know your own pace. Plenty of PUDs although I must confess that the view from Kelly Nob was nice. Good place to catch your breath too after the climb up it.
Kerosene 02-26-2006, 08:57 I hiked from Blue Mountain Shelter, a few miles south of Unicoi Gap, to Dicks Creek Gap/Hiawassee in one day with full pack (April 2004). We left the shelter at 7 AM and I arrived at Dicks Creek Gap at 4 PM, but I was moving quickly. There are a few good climbs in the section, and the descent to Dicks Creek Gap is quite elongated.
SnakebiteSurvivor 02-27-2006, 03:09 Bly Gap is about 9 miles south of Dick's Creek Gap --
Oops... yes, I meant to say 9 miles NORTH of Dick's Creek Gap, as Generoll points out!
