View Full Version : Full AT map GA->Main word doc attached.
Hello All.
I created a map of the AT from Georgia to Main by taking screen shots of an adobe acrobat file and putting the resulting images in a word document (see the attached file).
Here is what I did.
Print the full document then cut and past with scissors. I used this technic for my support team to keep track of my progress. Not sure if its practical for taking with you on a thru-hike.
Check it out

:banana Very cool. Thank you!
Looks like you can get away with making the pictures a bigger without sacrificing resolution. The pictures are displayed at 78% of the native size. By minimizing the margins (set them all to zero and then take the values that Word uses to "fix" the situation) and returning the pictures to 100% of the original (right click, Format Picture..., Size tab, keep aspect ratio locked and change either height or width to 100%) you can maximize the page.

I combined the individual pages into a single .gif file. (1.3MB after crop, photomerge) I've tried uploading it (after putting it in a .zip file), but it won't go. What is the secret handshake to get it to upload? (I am selecting the file then pushing the upload button, but it ends up giving an error message.)
You can purchase a 9.5" x 48" copy of the entire trail in color from the ATC for $2.95. Click below to order:

BTW, some outfitters give these maps away for free; you may want to check with yours.
Also, RITblake put together a progress tracker. Visit the following link for details:

last Year The Hiker Guys And A Group That Started In March Had A Progress Map Complete With Pictures That Updated Location Of About 12-15 Hikers. Really Neat. Go To T.j. And See Traction, Super Feet, Or Domino's Journal To Find It. Hiker Guys Might Be Able To Hook You Up For 2006
Hello friend.
In regard to your zip file. There is alot of internet filtering software that will not allow zip files to be uploaded. Don't know why. I think its because some zip files are the self extracting type that might contain malicious software.
Try sending the gif file as a gif. If that doesnt work rename it to a txt file then send it. Be sure to tell people its actually a gif file. If none of this makes any sense drive to your nearest pub and have a cold one and fugetaboutit...

For anyone interested, I took the ATmap.pdf and converted the whole thing into a jpeg file from acrobat. I have created a zip file bringing it down to 5.81 megs. I don't want to put the bandwidth burden on WB, So I am hosting it on my ISP's webspace. The url is as follows

esmithz,
I couldn't get it to upload, so I'm guessing the firewall here is messing things up. Anyhow, I put it on my web page if anyone is interested. It is similar to what gr8fulyankee did, but is a .gif file and only 1.3 Mb in size. I printed it on a plotter at 42" x 10" and it looks pretty good.

Rgarling, why wouldn't you just plot the pdf that the NPS has available on their site? Same print size, same file size, same info. Not knocking what you've done, just curious as to the "why" part. I used the pdf to plot out a few of the maps for my family to follow me along.
