I am stressed out to say the least. I was wondering is this gonna make my hike worse. I wannna just drop everythign and go hike right now, but will i just think about all the crap back home? I almost feel like i can leave it all behid and let the hiking clear my mind, has this worked for anyone else??
Thanks

I know when SGT Rock is stressed out it always helps him to get out in the mountains for a hike to clear his mind. He always comes home in a much better mood, more relaxed and less stressed. Hopefully it will work for you too if you go with the idea that it will help. Good luck!

if the problem is inside you, hiking long enough will cure it.

if the problem is at home (wife, job, school, whatever), it will still be there when you get back. but you may be able to deal with it better after a walk.

my work runs on a two month cycle, bringing projects to completion... at certain points, about every couple weeks, there are deadlines followed by a day or two that's slower... i try to hike on weekends after my deadlines, when my stress level is at its highest, and come back fairly fresh...

Stress is also relative condition. Twenty years from now, the things that have you stressed today will seem trivial. Start your hike and try to "burn up" the stress in the first few days and then forget it so it dosen't ruin the rest of your hike. Whatever stressors are importent enough to remain will still be there when you get back, and by then your prospective will have changed. Go Hike!

You're 20 years old. What could possibly be stressing you out?

School, student loans, parents, money, etc, etc...All the adult responsibilities are expected out of you at 20, but some people really haven't learned to deal with them yet.

If you have unresolved issues (ie. rocky relationship) they will probably follow you on the trail. Try to resolve them before you go. Either that or the fact that you are gone will resolve the issue by default. If the issue is money - obviously, it will impact your hike. You can ignore it - but it may send you home early. Family issues can also affect your hike - sick relatives etc. may mean you have to go home - but that is no reason not to go out for as long as you can. Work issues are only a problem if you plan to go back to the same job.

Many of the things that stress you now will disappear once you are on the trail, especially all the prehike jitter type issues. But you will have to go home again after the hike. So anything that will make your life more difficult later, should be dealt with now, if at all possible. I know a lot of people who went home early because they were worried about a girlfriend/boyfriend/parent/child/dog etc.

Nothing to be stressed about when you get on the trail. You will meet new people see great things and you dont have to worry about anything except filtering water, eating, and sleeping. The great thing about hiking is that their is no one their to tell you to do something. If you see a cool looking stream and you want to take a quick little nap by it , their is no one to tell you cant. I think thats what it is all about. Relax and have fun. See ya out there.

Hiking will definitely help relieve stress. When I come back from hikes, I feel as though I've accomplished something, and it makes me fell stronger, able to conquer life's everyday obstacles, makes them seem smaller somehow. Just remember to leave all of things that are getting to you behind when you go.

Having three kids and a mortgage and getting laid off is stress.

1) Stress can lead to piss-poor planning which can lead to a less-than-enjoyable hike. Breath, ponder a few, get your stuff in order then head out.

2) A hike to reduce stress can be fine. Just realize you might come home to a bigger mess and that next hike may be in order ASAP. On my return from last years AT section hike I was informed of an upcoming divorce event. I went hiking again! Just what I needed!

I agree with ffstenger. We all have stress at one point or another. When you are young there are issues that can really push your button! Later in life you look back and laugh at those times and how you reacted to them.
There are other things in life that are more serious that need a heavy dose of "positive thinking" !!!! Your attitude toward any issue should be upbeat and positive this will help with alittle meditation along the way.
Go hike and relax, leave the stress behind !!!!!!!!! ;)

Amen, brother. Add a wife in school because she was laid off too... along with that. Where'd that family budget go? Glad that's over.
