I have never been on the AT in PA. For a one night shakedown hike, what are your thoughts on this section. Looks like approximately 16 miles without much elevation change, save the downhill to Port Clinton.
My wife's parents are close by, so a ride is not an issue. Anything I should be aware of, as I am not going to have a set of maps.
thanks

1. Not a lot of water out there, so carry extra.
2. It can be snaky, tho the stretch north of Port Clinton is much worse.
3. Otherwise, you're right, it's a nice easy stretch.

183, to be precise (Don't confuse it w/ 83, which is an Interstate near Harrisburg). 14.4 mi. according to the book. Easy stretch. You didn't say when, but Jacks's right. I see more rattlers on this section than anywhere else. The northbound descent into PC is a controlled fall. Steps part of the way. Not the most scenic hike.
Also, since you aren't going to have maps, I assume you know that Eagle's Nest Shelter is roughly halfway, a little closer to the 183 end.

thanks for the response from both Jack and C.Coyle.
no worries on the 83, I grew up in the Hunt Valley Md area, very familiar with that highway.
ccoyle, i guess you are near Pine Grove, my wife's parents live right on Sweet Arrow Lake Road nearby to Pine Grove, actually that is their mailing city...
and Jack, I read most all of Mountain Dew's 2003 trip log. you sound like a right cool cat.
again, thanks for the info-hope to see you on the trail someday.

I did that stretch in June for a dayhike...nice little stretch with only one "climb" of about 300'. I didn't see much cause I was following two speedy folks. We started at 9:30am and were done at 2:00pm with a stop at Eagle's Nest Shelter for a snack. Went to Cracker Barrell for lunch afterwards. :)
Have a great hike!
