After a couple of months lurking on WB and the various posted links, and doing plenty of homework, it looks like I've joined the hangin' crowd. I've ordered a HH ULB A-sym, a MacCat Deluxe tarp, and the K/A Potomac underquilt. My back already is thanking me!!! Looking forward to trying it all out in the next couple of weeks in the back words. Thanks to all the contributers on WB for their input and wisdom.

Note: Is it just me or have I lost my mind????...i was skiing with my three kids in PA. last night......and while I was on the ski lift...I was actually "scouting out" sites to hang my HH....scary huh??

Welcome to the crowd. Spent my first cold night hanging last night. Definitly a learning curve to hammocking.

I found myself checking out the trees on dayhikes. The best part is when you start looking for the craziest places to set up. The biggest slope, rockiest ground, over a creek. Good times.

yeehaw!! we got us another 'un, paw!

welcome to the hanging crowd... sounds like you haven't used it yet though. you may not have known this, but you are required by law to come here, post your results, explain what you think wasn't comfortable, and allow us to help you fix anything that didn't work right... this period of adjustment may take more than one or two nights... please be patient... it is well worth it... breaks my heart every time i hear someone say they tried it once or twice, and it wasn't all it was cracked up to be... it IS... you just have to go through the learning curve... all of us "hangers" will bend over backwards to ensure it works for you... so be patient... we'll have you comfy in no time... soon, you'll be experimenting with tarps, seeing how cold you can get (well, not you... the outside temps i meant), and what's the best way to store your gear... etc.

again, welcome to the light.

(ok, second question... are you a stovie too? or not yet?)

I have two alkie stoves, but I still take the JB. It's just so damn convenient!

I just went to get some copper wire and heat-resistant tape so I can use it in cold weather...this method was outlined on BPL for using cannister stoves in sub-freezing temps. Beats buying a new stove!

Oh - back to hammocks. It's very easy to cook from my Speer-type with the JB. I wouldn't want to try it with the alcohol stove setup.

Welcome to the hanging crowd...pretty soon we'll need a secret handshake. Pan

you can already recognize hammockers... we're the ones smiling, not carrying a tent, and without big rings under our eyes because we got a great night's sleep!

actually, it would probably be a handshake where you start pushing sideways after the initial grip, replicating the hammock swinging gently...

Where were you skiing in PA? I went skiing on Sunday at JF b/c it was free (customer appreciation day) - oy vey the snow was awful. Or should I say the "snow" was awful. About 1/4 inch of the worst fake snow I've ever seen covering a sheet of ice. But since it was free, who can complain?

Or replicating me pushing off the tree and making myself rock gently to sleep.

A really, really fun part of hanging is watching the tenters trying to sleep on a slope. No, they don't sleep on a slope, the wind up in one of the corners. HAHAHAHA. Hangers don't need no flat ground and rocks are our friends.

yeah... there's got to be a way to run a line between a hammock and a battery/solar powered 'rocker'... hmm...

i let my mother in law lay in my HH once, and started rocking her (thinking it'd be funny, since my wife almost immediately gets nauseous from that), and she wouldn't get up... told me to go away and let her sleep... pretty funny...

a really, really fun part of tenting is watching the hangers scurry for treeline when i'm sleeping out on a bald, a sand beach, or above treeline.;)
