View Full Version : Straight forward Goal reminder.
Just to remind those posting to the straight forward forum that the "rules" here are a bit different than the other forums here at White Blaze.
For example, if someone posts a question / statement about the Blue mountain shelter ie: "How many do it sleep, is there water & campsites nearby? I'm stopping there in May."
A statement like: "I hate shelters" or "The Standing Indian shelter is better" are off topic. The answers are about shelters, but NOT on topic, so will be deleted.
A statement like: the bugs may be bad that time of year, esp at Blue Mt. Is on topic even tho not addressing a specific question by the poster, it is truely in the spirit of the post. A good example of this is the current "Fuel consumption" question, while not asked by the poster, Pot cozys are mentioned as a way to save fuel, so is in the spirit of the post. However should the "Pot cozy" theme continue to Which PC is best, that will be removed. Want to talk about Pot Cozys? Start a new thread, K.
An apology: on the "Quotes" forum I started a while ago, some discussions explaning some quotes [not on topic, but in the spirit of same] were deleted, they probably should not have been. We were removing posts discussing the relative merets (or lack thereof) of the authors [not on topic, not in the spirit of same] & well,,,,,, things happen. Sorry, we were learning. :o
Thanks for your posts & patience.
Doctari.
Doctari,
Thank you for an explanation of the "Straight Forward" forum.
Because I always click on "Today's Posts" rather than "Forums", I had been a WB member for some time before I saw the description of the "Straight Forward" forum. Until then I never really understood what "straight forward" was about.
It's possible that others misunderstand the purpose of this forum, resulting in non-compliant posts. Do you suppose a new name, one more descriptive of the purpose of this forum, might encourage compliance? What do you think of "Strictly Moderated", or "Closely Moderated"?

Maybe even slightly changing the color (like the women's forum, but please not pink) would alert people that "something is different" about the threads they click on. I use the "New Posts", so I often don't realize it's in the Straight Forward as I'm reading it, but the color would help.

I'll second that idea - maybe a nice blue? I too use the New Posts tool and often do not recognize where I am reading/posting.

I also use the "new posts" button and may not know what section I'm in (except for the ladies forum). I'll pay closer attention. I think that too many different colored forums would get awfully confusing.
I don't know if changing the color is the answer, but I usually don't know that I've posted in the Straight Forward thread until after the fact. SO yeah, it may not be a bad idea.
Another idea... Add a script or utility so that when you hit enter, a message comes back reminding you that you're posting in the Straight Forward forum, and that off topic postings may be deleted. You would then either edit your message or hit enter a second time to post your message. That shouldn't be too hard to implement (I wouldn't think).

ahhhhhh, beuracracy slips in....shouldnt the yes & no questions come in PM form instead of waisting time & space on WB?

Maybe even slightly changing the color . . .I'd like to add my vote to that concept, if it's not off subject. For the record I have stepped off into that pot of glue, not realizing I was in the "straight forward" forum.
Great suggestions about having a different color. Talked to ATtroll, & we should have a new color soon.
As Pink is no longer being used on the women's forum, he has lots of it leftover, so we'll use that, OK.
Gotcha :D
Actually, probably a much lighter green, but it is open for suggestions, I think.
I suggested Camo :p
Again, thanks for the suggestion.

:-? If it's camo, won't it be difficult to read? I mean, how will we see it?

No, the words will show up just fine. It'll just look like your screen has disappeared and the words are floating in space. If you're reading WB out in the woods, anyway... :p
As you may notice, the background is now a lighter green than the rest of the forums. Thanks for the suggestion all!
Hope this helps ID the Straight forward forums.

Changing the color ever so slightly is too subtle a change IMO.

I never realized there was such a thing as a Straight Forward thread, not sure how to find it... but I'll look for the color

Um...click on Forums and look for the one that says "Straight Forward". Otherwise, after you click on "New Posts", look to the right column and it tells you what forum each thread is in.

Ditto! I had to switch between posts a couple of times to recognize what was different.
Re "too subtle color change"
To me, it jumps right out. Possibly cause I'm looking for it.
Showed it to my son, an artist, "what is different on these pages?" then I switched back & forth between SF & General forums. I had to tell him after a few switches.
So, the question on the floor: What color would be best? Pink has already been vetoed, and the lighter green seems to not stand out. Red has already been taken by the womens forum. Blue? Yellow? White? Other? and: shade, Light med dark.

Try black and blue. WB will feel your pain when your post is removed for not staying on topic.
A dark blue. Also, keep in mind some my be using the gray background.
