I have heard about vandalism and other problems at the parking area at Keys Gap just south of Harper's Ferry on the VA/WV border. Does anyone know if there are or have been problems there? I hiked past it a few years ago and the lot was full although I think most if not all were day hikers. It is right next to the road and any vehicle would be in plain view. The reason I'm asking is that I will not be driving my car. I will be in my folks car which is much nicer and a better target for thieves, vandals, etc. I don't want anything bad to happen to THEIR vehicle. Just wondering....Keys Gap isn't far from the David Lesser shelter and it's any easy hike. I'm thinking this would be a cheap alternative to staying in a hotel in Harper's Ferry when I visit after Traildays next month. Any info or experiences will help. My schedule is a little compressed so parking at the visitors center isn't really an option since I would have a lot further to hike to a suitable overnight spot. Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer!

you can drive up to the blackburn shelter/cabin (w/ plenty of campsites) it has plenty of parking and someone stays in cabin so i am sure its pretty safe. its only a 10-15 minute drive from keys gap(rt.9)
directions from keys gap:
head east on rt9 charlestown tnpk.
R on Cider mill rd.
R on woodgrove rd
R on appalachian trail rd. ends at cabin

i live close by and day hike area quite frequently very pretty!

Thanks for the suggestion ptfo! I forgot all about the Blackburn center. I've only been hiking in that area once. I agree, it's a lovely place to hike. Likewise Harper's Ferry is one of the most beautiful towns I've ever been to. Thank you for the directions. I've already written them down. I'll have to read up on the Blackburn, but right now is sounds way better than my original idea. Thanks again!

North of Harpers at Crampton Gap is a great park and camp. Crampton Gap is very interesting historically, and the Nearest shelter is only about a 25 minute hike up the hill. (north).
