I was looking online at these RatSacks. I want one. But I can't allow myself to pay $40 plus shipping for it. (I never usually buy anything unless I can get it on sale or use a coupon.) It looks pretty simple to make. So, I looked online for stores that sold the exact same mesh (0.011 diameter wire, 304 stainless steel knitted mesh) and most places list it as about $2.00/sqf, but I have to buy a certain (obscene) amount to get it online.

I looked back about 10 pages and couldn't find a thread about it. Has anyone tried it? And is this mesh easy to find at a Lowes, Home Depot, or Argisupply stores?

Very interesting! I'd not heard of the "RatSack" until your post and I went a-googling.

A couple thoughts:

1. In the rain it'll leak like a sieve without an inner (or outer) waterproof bag. Consider using an odorproof/waterproof liner, such as the AlokSak.

2. Have you looked at the Ursack? ( http://www.ursack.com ) It resists bear as well as rodentb@st@rds. And it comes with an AlokSak. ;)

I had planned on putting my food in a Ziploc bag and then the RatSack. But these AlokSaks aren't that expensive. I'll look into it.

And the Ursack is more expensive than the RatSack. Unless you can instruct me on how to make my own cheaper version. :)
