View Full Version : my own rat/bear proof idea
SGTdirtman 04-05-2006, 21:56 Been alot of posts recently about rodent and bear proof bags... just wanted to share my idea that has yet to be tested by bear or rodent but seems smart to me.
Instead of carrying a chain link bag, I took a very light weight cotton bag, lined it with a heavy plastic bag, then lined the outside with another heavy plastic bag and glued/taped the 2 plastic bags together so the inner cotton bag was completely sealed...
Why you ask? Cause before I sealed them together I added a rather liberal coating of a very strong sour apply spray mixed with crushed Habanero membranes to the cotton bag. non toxic but one lick of this stuff will have you trying to cut your own tounge off. sealed in it lasts for months and months.
let a rat or bear try and naw its way into that... I cant figure out a decent way to test this theory, Ive been leaving food in it for a while trying to get squirrels to try and chew through it but no ones taking the bait.

Love the concept! Pay to play, so to speak.
Skidsteer 04-05-2006, 22:02 Take it to Blood Mountain shelter and throw it on the floor for the night. That'll be a good test. Even better; Videotape it!

I'd pay to see the tape...
That is just AWFUL,,,,,
I love it :D
Let us know how it works, & test area, critters tested on.
Doctari.
SGTdirtman 04-05-2006, 22:37 its been in the backyard filled with nuts, peanutbutter, and cheese doodles... but its not attracting any animals to attempt to attack it
gr8fulyankee 04-05-2006, 23:00 I suggest something like this at every shelter.

It's worth the watch!
Alligator 04-05-2006, 23:03 Smear the outside with peanut butter, then test.

They are too kind, launching into the trees. I knocked a tree-rat off my back porch bird feeder with a rubber bullet a few years ago. He lived to tell about it but every time I opened the back door he dove the 20 feet to the ground rather than run down the steps...
It might work, except for the bears. I think bears would have a better tolerance for heat and bitter tastes.
SGTdirtman 04-06-2006, 18:45 If only I wasnt banned from the zoo for heckling the monkeys.... I'd love to test it on a bear

LOL. Seriously, how does the bag open/close? Seems to me that's one of the inherent weak points.
Let me guess: Pro seal and 100mph tape? :D
