Anyone familiar with the area of Snickers Gap - Rt 7 and can tell me where to safely park a car for a shuttle? We plan to do the section between Chester Gap and Snickers Gap over Easter. Thanks!

There are two areas to park. There is a Virginia DOT commuter lot off VA-7 on the east bound side near the trail crossing. Several cars can park at this location. The other area is on the westbound side of VA-7 off VA-679 North. This lot is much smaller and somewhat secluded. My choice is the commuter lot. I had no safety issues in the past but it is always a crap shoot. Good luck on the hike. Saturday is calling for scattered showers.

The Rt. 7 parking, while not notorious for problems, is still one of those kinds of places that I would avoid for multiple overnights if better alternatives existed. Thankfully, they do.

If you could go about 7 more miles NOBO you could park more securely at Blackburn Trail Center.

You could also do the hike SOBO and make advance arrangements to park at the 4-H Center in Harmony Hollow, or call and see if you can park at Terrapin Hostel at Chester Gap.

Contact info for all three are in the ALDHA Companion. You can view it online for free at http://www.aldha.org/comp_pdf.htm

We've parked at the Rt7 VDOT lot for a number of overnighters and never had any problems, but ymmv.

Incidently, anyone ever been to this lot and not seen 10-20 bird watchers camped out there? Been there numerous times over the last 3-4 years and there must be some very interesting birds to look at because they're always there with their spotting scopes and binoculars.

You can park at the Bear's Den Hostel if you let them know you're there. There is a nominal charge for their lower lot.
