View Full Version : Mt. Katahdin
For those of you who've hiked up to Katahdin, roughly how far would be be from where this camera is located to the summit via the AT (assuming that the camera is located on or somewhat close to the AT)?
http://www.katahdincam.com/
And roughly how far would it be as the crow flies?
I have no sense of perspective and I've never seen Katahdin IRL.

hard to tell, but someone has posted this cam on WB before. perhaps they know where it is located. either way, i know you can see the mtn from a long ways off because it rises from nothing.

I'm just wondering... is there a map or photo of Katahdin on the web, with the AT visibly marked on it and showing Baxter Peak?
Heck, I've climbed Katahdin, and I still can't figure out where the Hunt Trail (AT) goes up and which peak is Baxter Peak.
I like the photos from Abol Bridge, for instance, but would love to know where in the photo the AT ascends Katahdin.

The Katahdin cam is about 15 miles away, due east, in Stacyville on a radio antenna. The peak in the foreground left is Pamola, with the KnifeEdge leading back to Baxter Peak. Baxter Peak is the only bit of the AT you can see from this view. In this Abol Bridge photo, http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/vbg/showimage.php?i=7240&catid=member&imageuser=314
the AT follows the ridge line on the left up onto the Hunt Spur, and then on up through the Gateway. That rockslide going up in the middle of the photo is the Abol Slide Trail. You can't see the AT as it's back from the edge winding through the Tableland. That peak on the far right is Pamola, and that sharp descent to the next high point is the Knife Edge. Baxter Peak is above those snowy gullys, just back to the left from Pamola. For what it's worth, you can see the summit sign and cairn with binoculars from the footbridge about half a mile north of the Abol Bridge Store. From the road driving towards the Park from Millinocket the high point you see is Pamola. From Katahdin Stream Campground and Daicey Pond the highpoint you see is the Gateway to the Tableland; http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/vbg/showimage.php?i=1070&c=574

It's further away than that. It's 33.06 miles, between Island Falls and Patten. It sits on a Pioneer Wireless tower on May Mt. aka Robinson Mt. next to a Maine Forest Service Fire Tower.

Type the following into Google
site:www.crownofmaine.com (http://www.crownofmaine.com) katahdincam
http://www.geocities.com/rainforest/vines/5923/may3.jpg
http://www.geocities.com/rainforest/vines/5923/may2.jpg
The tower is listed here
http://www.pwless.net/coverage.htm
The distance from the top of Mt. Robinson to Mt. Katahdin is ~33.055 miles. Since the top of Mt. Robinson is 1025 ft and Mt. Katahdin is 5268 ft., a crow would need to angle upwards. So it's about 33.06 miles away using the tops of both mountains give or take a few feet:) .
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Thats funny... I was told by the folks who actually put up the cam that its on a tower at the north end of town in Patten... and from Patten to Katahdin is roughly 23 miles/crow fly... 66ish via road.

That was my first guess, a little rough because Google placed the word Mt. Katahdin a bit east, which I later saw from the satellite map. Most hits for the katahdincam list it simply as Patten.
The webmaster for crown of maine however says its on a Pioneer Wireless tower and PW doesn't list a tower for Patten. The closest one is the tower listed for Island Falls. 1. The webmaster could be mistaken or 2. PW could have omitted a tower. Either would make my 2nd guess wrong.
Geez, you actually talked to real people with first hand information? How primitive!
OK, I admit, I didnt have actual voice communication with the people in Patten (or crownofmaine.com) but did communcate via email with them...

I see:-? .
Those folks at Pioneer need to update their coverage map. It hasn't been changed since 2002. I can't work under these conditions.

Jeff Clark of crownofmaine.net writes that the cam is on a radio tower in Patten, over on route 11. That puts it about 8 miles north of Stacyville.

*****Please pardon the interuption. Our operative has demonstrated a classic intelligence failure in post #10. All of the high tech survellience in the world is useless without real bodies on the ground looking up. While the photos of the radio tower are genuine and do represent a PW tower, they do not illustrate the tower in question. While the dots were connected in this case, the figure represented was--to borrow a phrase-- a gator's fundament.
On a side note, agent Monk has been assigned to a remote nuclear detection facility in Iraq on the border of Iran.*****
