Hi All,

I'm planning a section hike thru the Smokies for early JUne and am trying to decide on the way to handle a shuttle. Since I'm coming from the north, I think it makes the most sense to leave my car near Davenport Gap and hire a shuttle down to Fontana Dam. Any reasons why this is not good? Any suggestions for a shuttle driver? I guess this is near Mountain Momma's; do they drive shuttles? Any comments would be appreciated.

Leave your car at Standing Bear Farm (just north of DG) and have them drive you down to Fontana.

Popa John has given you an excellent suggestion. If you decide to hike in the other direction, try the Hike Inn (http://www.thehikeinn.netfirms.com/) for a shuttle.

Don't leave your car at the gap near the highway, there is a long and recent history of vandalism there. If you don't use Curtis from Standing Bear Farm, who I highly recommend for your shuttle, then park at the Big Creek Ranger Station.

I also suggest Standing Bear Farm. In addition to being a fine and safe place to leave your vehicle, you'd have a chance to clean up (or even overnight) before heading on home.

Great folks, great place. You can reach Curtis Owen at 423-487-0014

Thanks to all of you for your advice.

I did leave a car at Standing Bear and got Curtis to shuttle us to Fontana. Things worked out very well.

Lots of auto glass (windows, mirrors) & parts near the gap when I was there in 03. As posted here & elsewhere, it seems a questionable place to park.

Standing Bear is a FANTASTIC place, as is the Hike Inn.
