A group of us are planning a section hike from the trail near Whitetop, Virginia to the Partnership Shelter. Recommendations for safe parking near Whitetop would be appreciated. The AT Data Book makes mention of three possible parking sites. They are VA 601, Whitetop Mountain Road, and VA 600. Which one of these three would be the most preferred for leaving our vehicle?

email refrigerator (in the member list click on email) - he lives right at the base of Whitetop and is a very good source for local info.

There are signs at the Elk Garden (on Rt 600) trailhead warning of vandalism and outright vehicle theft over the last couple of years. You might be better off leaving your car at the Partnership Shelter at Mt Rogers NRA headquarters, where they lock the gate at night. The major drawback is that the gate is locked on weekends, so you have to drop off and pick up your car on weekdays during business hours.

You could also contact the Fox Hill Inn, I think Mark still shuttles hikers in the area, and you can leave your car there. It's about in the midpoint of your hike.
