Looking at doing a hike Memorial day weekend From Fox Creek to Deep Gap coming back down Mt. Rogers trail. Is it safe to park a vehicle 2 nights at Fox Creek trailhead?

Thanks

I wouldnt. If you ask MRO, they will tell you that is the one place where they wouldnt leave a car overnight. Just park in town and get them to shuttle you to 603 and hike back to town. We have actually done this same thing twice...great area and a great hike. have fun!

i've parked at fox creek many times for several days and never had a problem, which doesn't mean you won't have one but is merely my own experience

send an email to refrigerator (look on member list). He lives real close by and he can fill you in on whether it is safe to park there or not

A friend of mine parked her SUV at 603 for a few days recently while her group did a loop hike. When they got back, her SUV was gone. Someone stole it. The investigating officer said that they have had 40 car stolen from this spot.

I know the Frig has said in the past that it's safe to park there but I would never leave a car there overnite, nor at Elk Garden. I've heard too many horror stories to take a risk. Good seeing you at TD CD.

I recently asked a similar question about parking at Elk Garden. Reviews were mixed. The MR HQ office said there had been incidents in years past at Elk Garden, but it was relatively safer now. Still, they recommended parking inside the state park at Massie Gap.

HQ absolutely gave me the impression it was not safe to park overnight at the Fox Creek trailhead.

The other place I think it is safest to park in the Mt. Rogers area is Grindstone Campground. There is a small daily fee but you park in an area that is watched by FS personnel, volunteer hosts, and campers. From there you take a short blue-blaze to the Mt. Rogers Trail, the MRT to Deep Gap, then the AT up into the High Country.
