View Full Version : Hammocks in a Storm
We've already had a couple of violent storms this spring near Toronto and it's not even summer yet.
It got me thinking about safety in a storm. I already look for deadwood on the trees nearby. Are there other things I can do to keep from being a victim of a violent storm?

I'm guessing you mean rain storms and not snow storms.
For rain, it's the same things you would do in a tent, really.
Specifically for a hammock, just make sure the tarp is positioned low and tight, and try to orient yourself broadside to the wind.

I try to avoid ridgeline camping if it looks like a storm is possible, which is just about always. Site selection with regard to prevailing wind and the possibility of falling limbs and trees is about all I worry about.
Course I did find out recently that if you set up at night you won't find the hornets nest until morning:eek:

Thanks Sgt. Rock. That's a great article. Also I believe you are one of the people who first got me hammock camping oh so many years ago. Thank you.
A few years ago a friend gave me a book called "Worst Case Scenarios". It was written by a retired SAS (kinda like Navy Seals) trainer. I'm wondering if from your experience you can give me a few ideas about what to do when the s*** hits the fan out in the bush.

Well in my experience when the really bad **** is going on it is sometimes better to just put on your wet weather gear, climb under the log of a down tree, cover up with a tarp, and suck it up for a night. I am talking about a storm that is uprooting stuff and making everything a temporary building. At least in this case you would have a stout overhead cover against more falling trees and low cover to keep lightning off you. That said I have ridden out a tropical storm in my hammock.

Hammocks in the storm,
Hammocks in the storm,
Into this tent we're born,
a hammock we are thrown
Like a neo with a tarp,
He's using up his AARP,
Hammock in the storm,
There's a hiker on the road,
His boots are squishing like a toad,
Take a long hostel stay,
Let your hammock fray,
If ya give this hike' a ride,
White blazes they will die,
Hiker on the road.
Hike, ya gotta love your 'mock,
Hike, ya gotta love your 'mock,
Take it by the knot,
And center on the dot,
Calm night on you depends,
If the rain will ever end,
A Hiker in his 'mock...
Hope ya like it. Took me two minutes. Every time I see this thread, I get head candy with that song.
No offense neo.:) But it fit....

Nice. I spent a cool night hanging in a hammock at Wine Springs listening to a storm going on while Riders on the Storm played on my radio. Now if that happens again I will have "Hammocks in the Storm " going through my mind.

Got me laughing again. It's been a good night for me.
My hammock's in the storm
The eye is just offshore
But I'm keeping warm
A category four
The wind rips up the trees
Except of course for mine
Inside the tarp no breeze
Nor water from the line
Oh, ocean swell, winds from hell
Eighty miles an hour
Seabirds die and cattle fly
I swing inside my bower
