Hello,
This is my first time posting. I ran across this tent (Mandatory Gear, Puppy Pile) on the web and was wondering if anyone had any information about it. It says it is a 4 season, 4 person tent that is under 2 lbs. Just Curious if anyone else has heard of this? Thanks

sub-2lb, 4-season, 4-person?? you didn't include a link so i can only guess (too lazy to google).... but it sounds a lot like a tarp.
which, if it isn't obvious, is only 4-season in Florida, Texas, and Southern California...
I found a link here: Mandatory Gear, Puppy Pile (http://www.mandatorygear.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=&product_id=244&category_id=24&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=1). But your not going to catch me paying $499.

I was gonna post here an hour ago or so, but wanted to see what someone else said as I am NO tent expert. But a few point I noticed.
$499 for a NYLON tarp??? Four ppl??? Lucky to get two with no gear. Nylon is almost never used in winter tents because it stretches under weight ( snow ) or when really soaked with can lead to leaks if not recently DWPed. Most winter tents are polyester, or one of the newer fabrics, kerlon, or trilam. For $225 you can get a real, commonly used and tested, tried and true such as http://www.backcountrygear.com/catalog/tentdetail.cfm/MTH175
You can use a hiking pole instead of the one included to cut weight. A real tent at 3lb 2oz, 225, or a not so sure tent at 1lb9oz, 499. My neighbor has that tent for snow camping in NJ and he loves it. Me, I'd carry the extra 1lb 4oz if I was wintering and save the 274 for a good congac and gold plated spork.

Sweat lodge is right.
This was actually designed for adventure racers, who spend very little time actually sleeping in a tent.
4 people in a tent 60" wide? They ain't gonna be people like me - that's for dang sure. I'm not side sleeping all night long.

Why do you think they call it "puppy pile"??? Four adventure racers zonked with exhaustion carrying no other shelter and no bags making spoons inside an overpriced waterproof, non breathing, low volume tent. Sounds kinky, hot, decidedly uncomfortable and probably life-threatening. Headline: Adventure racers dead of suffocation! four found parboiled in small tent
As Billdog noted... the puppy pile is designed for adventure racers who often don't have sleeping bags. The collapse in exhaustion and stay warm by being in a puppy pile (e.g. on top of each other). Racers sleep for a few hours and then get moving again.
I haven't seen this shelter in person, but I have read a number of reviews. I think there are a number of shelters which are significantly superior shelters for backpacking.
I keep a list of shelters I recommend (or suggest you avoid) at http://www.verber.com/mark/outdoors/gear/shelter.html

If I can pick the other three people, I'm all about it! ;)

What happens in the puppy pile, stays in the puppy pile. ;)

Well thank you all for the excellent critique. I myself have a tarptent rainbow and am very happy with it. I was checking out other lightweight tents when I ran across this one and I couldn't find much info on it. Thank you all for clarifying why it isn't used for backpacking. Damn adventure racers!
I'm learning more about adventure racers in this thread than a tent/tarp. I knew they shaved their legs and liked to wear tight fitting and colorful clothing, but I didn't know that they liked to pile into a tent too small with no sleeping bags and spoon all night. There's hundreds of these guys in the north Georgia mountains every weekend! And "W" is worried about gay marriage?
