View Full Version : Are hammocks addicting?

I have been thinking of this for a few days, so, are they?

My story:

I got a Byer hammock may 12th. Slept in it for first time on the 13th, not real comfy, but OK. After a few days of tinkering I slept great. Now, I sleep in it every night that I am home from work. Last night, I decided to get a second hammock & put it in my bedroom. Turns out that the distance between 2 walls in my bedroom is the exact size as is between the trees I use in my backyard. The plan is to sleep in the hammock during extreme heat & cold.

I think I'm addicted.

"Hello, my name is Doctari, and I have been without my hammock for 3 days now"

Just a thought or a laugh.

I know that there are those who disagree, but I find that I sleep MUCH better hanging in the ear than on the ground. Currently I am making an underquilt to replace the blue CCF pad I have been using (Hammocking should be even MORE comfortable).

I confess that I have not made the switch to full time (My spouse would defintely protest), but I often hand the hammock (outdoors) for an afternoon nap.

I am not an addict, I can stop anytime I want to. I just choose not to.

I been thinking about putting one inside. Not really a good idea at my current place. My next place will be an indoor hammock stand.

Then again maybe I can't stop.

Evidently - yes. But it seems to be the only thing on the planet that I'm NOT addicted to.

My girlfriend broke up with me in Hot Springs. I was mortified. Decided to chear myself up by spending a lot of money at the outfitter (hence the reason why I only hike half the trail haha) and bought a hammock. Never slept in a shelter again. My initial plan was to sleep in it at home too. Haven't done it yet, but now you have me inspired! Cheers.

We admitted we were powerless over hanging and our tarp was unmanageable.
Came to believe that trees could restore us to sanity.
Made a decision to turn our tarps and tree-huggers over to the care of trees, as we understand them.
Made a searching and fearless inventory of all the trees in the forest.
Admitted to a shelter mouse, to ourselves and to anyone who would listen exactly why hammocks are so great.
We are entirely ready to have the trees remove all the kinks from out back.
Humbly asked the trees to hold us up.
Made a list of all the tent dwellers and became entirely ready to convert them.
Made direct appeals to tent dwellers whenever possible, except when to do so would result in them injuring us or our hammocks.
Continued to inventory trees and when we find a great pair, we promptly hang from them.
Sought through hiking and backpacking to improve our conscious contact with trees, as we understand them, seeking only knowledge of tying the perfect knot and a pair of trees to carry it out.
Having had a spiritual awakening as a result of all this, we continued these practices and carry the message to the unenlightened.

Last month my wife and I spent a week camping in the Smokies near Cataloochie. I brought along a nice tent to appease my bride, and even spent two nights in there. After tossing and turning both nights, I broke out the HH. Five nights of real rest, I don't think I moved. From under the tarp I witnessed a lightning storm and stayed dry, several beautiful sunrise views not available from the tent, and being up valley from the elk release point in Cataloochie, an honest to gawd elk sighting, and even heard elk bugle in the valley. The wife got her space, and an extra sleeping pad, sans hubby. Well maybe sometimes.;) Can't beat that.

Addicting? Well, let us see...I converted my dining room into a sewing room... permanently mounted a quilting board to the table... I have TWO sewing machines. One set up for lightweight stuff, one set up for heavyweight stufff...The spare bed room is now the Hammock fitting room, initial fitting, testing etc is done here. And it also has a permanently hung hammock that I sleep in on the weekends.

Roz still won't let me get rid of the Sleep Number and put a hammock up in our room yet. :(

Yea, I guess it is, a little. :)

That's Funny. The "guest room" still has a bed in it but it has been invaded by a sewing machine, work table and both closets are full of assorted assembly things..... :-? Come to think of it... A few holes in some studs...a little hardware installation and I could hang a hammock in there too.

I-Double Mexican Rainbow Hammock (Given to me as a gift)
2-Homemade Cloth Hammocks Tan ( Made one for my son and one for Son-in-law)

2-Hammock Chairs (One for Hubby and one for my Daughter)
2-Portable Folding Hammock Stands with nylon hammocks (Take car camping for family and friends)

and I still want a Clark and maybe a Crazy Creek and an Jungle Mosquito one...yes they are addicting!!!

I'm certainly not addicted but I definitely like the taste. I finally got a hammock this week and I've managed to set it up next to my bed. So far it's replaced the sofa, but I haven't slept in it yet. I'm easing myself into it by spending and hour or two trying to get to sleep each night before bailing for the bed. Sooner or later I expect to wake up in it.

There are all sorts of funny things going on in my back and joints, but in a good way. I suspect that hammocks support the human body properly, and we have to untrain ourselves from a lifetime of bad lounging and sleeping posture.

Since this looks like confession time ...

3 HH Camping Hammocks
2 Home made Risk Test types
1 South American made rope style
1 Rope w/speader bars so it is easy to tip over

and ...

I will be making 2 more home made ones this next week.

I've put more money into aftermarket hammock gear than I have into aftermarket Jeep gear. I don't even remember how many hammocks I've made...I've given several away to converts. I have more pieces of paper with hammock/gear drawings and notes around my house than pages of letters I've written for the past 10 years. I spend so much time thinking of new ideas that my kids roll their eyes at me...but they can still spot a good hammock spot almost as well as I can!

But alas, I still can't get my wife to sleep in one.

Could be... just completed 8 nights of the AT, was the first time to use a hammock and haven't slept that good since I got home.

Sounds like it's time to invest in a hammock stand for your bedroom. Or at least some eyebolts...

I just bought my first hammock today. It's an Eagle's Nest. Figured that would be a good start. I'm going to sleep in it tonight.

So, what, I'll never be normal again? (sounds of laughing everywhere!)

No, but just like any other convert you'll be spreading the news to anyone who will listen...and many who won't.

Got permission from the wife, going to Home Despot (not a misspelling) tomorrow to get me 2 big eyebolts. My "problem" is I live in a brick house, not a frame house with a brick veneer, an actual brick house, so (I think) I can't attach to the 2 outside walls, got to go cat corner.

You could anchor two 2x4's (with eyebolts already installed at your preferred height) vertically to your walls. It would distribute the weight/torque over a larger surface.

Anything that gets you out of a shelter has at least one up side.

Probably a good idea...don't wanna pull any bricks out of your wall. And you can paint it like a tree so it looks real...
