I've been missing the trail a lot lately so I thought I would start to do a few weekend hikes. I'm living near Nyack, NY about 20 minutes from Bear Mtn Bridge, and about 30 minutes from the AT crossing at rt 17 in Arden, NY.

I'm going to leave Friday at noon from work and head to a trailhead. I think the farthest I would be willing to drive is an hour. Anyone have a good 3 day stretch in this area, more importantly, anyone know of a good shuttle service in the area? I would have to leave my car in a safe spot too.

My mileage would probably be something like 10 miles on Friday, 12-15 on Saturday, and 10-12 on Sunday. Obviously those arn't exact figures but you get the idea. I'd like to go north if possible. Thanks in advance.

I don't have my maps handy but I bet you could make a 3 day loop hike right in the Bear Mountain and Harriman State Parks. I bet your car would be safe if you parked in the large parking lot near the Bear Mountain Inn. My wife and I have parked overnight at a number of different places in Harriman park with no problems.

If you're willing to go a wee bit father - go up to New Platz, NY (next exit north of Newburgh off the NYS Thruway) and head up to the Shawangunk Ridge & Minnewaska State Park. You could wander around the trails and carriage paths all weekend. Plenty of great swimiining, unique geology, and stuff you never ever see on the AT. You'll thank me afterwards - I promise.

Hey Mowgli I know what you mean, I used to rock climb at the gunks in highschool. Amazing place. Not a bad idea. But I really did want to get back to the AT, chat w/ some thru hikers, see the trail again etc..
