I'm hoping to leave a car in/near Dalton and one in Williamstown Mass to do an overnight hike. Anyone know if there is parking at both locations? The guidebook seems to list public parking in Dalton, but not in Williamstown. Know any places that allow parking or is there a small hiker lot? How feasible is leaving it at the Pine Cobble Lot overnight? Thanks

In 2003 I left my car at the Greylock Community Center which is just 100 yards east of the AT on Rt 2. Went into the club to see if it was OK and they said no problem. You could see there were several other hiker cars there.

This topic came up a while ago.

I left my car at the Pine Cobble trail head, hiked the Pine Cobble Trail to the AT, then hiked the AT to Hanover and returned to Williamstown on the bus. Including the time I spent in Hanover and Manchester Center my car was probably there almost two weeks. I notified the police and they drove by the parking area on their daily rounds to keep an eye on it. No problems.

However, in the earlier thread there were some other parking suggestions in Williamstown that I would have used had I known about them at the time.

I'd be reluctant to leave my car at Pine Cobble as long as Max Patch. It's a small lot and we could use the space. But for a day or two, I'd say no problem. Greylock Community Club is the best bet for any length of time. Dalton is more of a problem, Rob Bird of "The Birdcage" hostel is probably the best bet. Check at the Shell station on Rt 8/9 just west of the AT.

There is also a lot on the Williams College campus about a 1/4 mile from the Pine Cobble Trailhead. You could leave it there and I don't think anyone would notice. It's a storage lot at the edge of campus. No recent vandalism of locked cars. See me for details.

You can also ride the bus between Dalton and North Adams (AT crossing of Rt 2) or Williamstown.

My girlfriend and I left our cars ovenight at the Community Center, no problems. Nice folks who run the place too. Did an overnight to Chesire and took the bus back to route 2. Nice easy hour ride.

For anyone interested, the bus stops at the P.O in Chesire about once an hour and costs 3.30$ to get to Adams and another $1.10 to get to the A.T. on Route 2.
