Was curious to find out how many hangers out there feel that lying flat is essential? It seems there are various options besides the HH that seems to be the camping standard, but is the HH the only one where you can lie flat? If so, then there must be a lot of hangers out there who do not lie flat when they sleep, and therefore, it must not be a big deal, right?

p.s. I'm joining the 'airborne' any day now. (I blame Neo!) :)

You can lie flat in many hammocks. My homemade ones are flatter than my HH...probably b/c they're longer. I haven't tried a longer HH but I assume they're flatter than my HH Backpacker.

Sleeping "almost flat" may better than "flat" anyway. Even with a cushy DAM, I'm more comfortable in a hammock than on my floor.

way more comfortable in my hammock than on my floor.. even when circumstances don't give me that "perfect" hang, where I might not be completely flat. . usually my legs are slightly higher than my head..

I was able to get 'flater' in a Speers hammock than a HH because it had 'sides'. I was too wimpy to get completely diagonal (which is where the 'sweet spot' is for me) in the HH because I felt like I was going to flip over any second. YMMV

For me the "wider" the hammock the more I am able to lay almost flat.
My family loves to lay in a hammock looking like a bananas and are all perfectly comfortable...while I lay completely sideways.

Most any hammock over 4 feet wide will let you lie on the asym....All you normally need for flat lie is about 8 inches off center...more is better, if the hammock is both wider and longer or you are shorter.

I don't feel that lying flat is essential. I have found though that the flatter I am able to get the more comfortable I sleep. True, the wider and longer the hammock the flatter I am able to get.

It seems like I *need* to lie flat to get to sleep, but I may wake-up in any position. Most of the time I haven't moved, but sometimes I find myself in some pretty weird positions. The big difference is, I don't wake-up hurting!
