Just returned from another round of Pa and got to use this stove:

http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-bin/backpackinglight/vargo_triad_titanium_xe_stove.html

I used it in 'Esbit' mode and was very impressed...of course it shouldnt take a lot to boil water when the air temp is 94F :)

The tablets did leave a residue on the bottom of the titan pot but it wiped off easily, didnt notice any offensive smell when burning either.

I think its an option to consider versus alcohol stoves since you cant spill the big esbit tablets.

probably the best pack of all time...i doubt you will have reason to return it to Bruce yet that too is another positive of dealing with LLP....yep, back from PA for 2 days then off to Kings Canyon...enjoy your hike!

True; however, what I liked about the concept of this stove is that it can burn alochol or esbit. Should you have inadvertently dropped/forgotten your esbit, you could have used the alcohol adapter and some of my alcohol (I always carry extra you know ;) ). On a long hike this stove gives you options that it seems to me might be useful.

I certainly wasn't suggesting it is the only stove that can do this - as someone new to this, my knoweldege of what is available is sadly lacking, but I am willing and wanting to learn :) and am loving the discussions here are Whiteblaze amongst those of you who have built up such a knowledge base and from whom I can learn!

Cool stove.

I've checked out other Vargo products before and they appear extremely well made, but as Sgt Rock suggests it's easy enough to flip over an alcohol stove and use Esbit.

Well I don't know about this new Vargo alcohol stove. But the old one was a dog.

Why's that? I've never actually used one but they do look good.

They are basically a titanium version of a pressurized soda can stove like the penny stove. But they are a pain in the ass to fill because of the ultra small hiller hole. IT was a royal mess to fill the darn thing. Next they are not sealed. See, those types of stoves build up pressure, but because of how they were put together, there is a large area where there is no good seal between the two stove half which resulted in sputtering and flames coming out where they are not supposed to. The stove on these aluminum home made versions help heat the alcohol and pressurize them because aluminum is a great heat conductor. Titanium is not a good heat conductor AT ALL. Aluminum, then silver, then brass, steel, etc. Titanium is WAY down at the bottom.

So it is a cool titanium novelty with a great AWWW factor, but it sucked as a stove.

Agreed. The original Vargo alcohol stoves were horrid. I owned one for about 10 min before returning the thing. Alcohol would leak out at the seal and burst into flames.

The XE doesn't burst into flames like its predecessor, but I still prefer a homemade pepsi can stove.
