Hammock Bag

I'm close to buying a Campmor 20 degree mummy for my HH. Around $109.
Anyone have any other bags you would suggest that are in that price range and temperature range? Seems hard to beat seeing as though a major outfitter such as NorthFace or another quality company actually makes their bags. Thanks.

I've looked into those. I really want something closer to 20 degree for fall and possibly winter use. And that is getting out of my price range. I'm kinda surprised they dont carry a quilt that is rated for lower temps. I would use my mummy as a quilt in my hammock. Along with a SPE from Speer, car reflector, fleece liner or mummy.

I bet they'd make a 20F quilt for you if you emailed them...it's just another layer of insulation on the same design. Better yet, make your own! It's very simple - only a few straight stitches. You could even do it by hand with a bit of patience.

I can't stress how easy it is to make a quilt, and there's no feeling in the world like using gear you made yourself out in the woods.

Lots of people are happy with the Ray Jardine quilt kit but I haven't used one. I just got my stuff from thru-hiker.com. Here's a basic list:

- Two layers of DWR or wpb for the shell...something like thru-hiker's Teflon DWR or eVent. Even $1/yd DWR from Walmart. Don't use silnylon.
- Insulation - Polarguard, Primaloft or ClimaShield. How many layers depends on how much insulation you want. Choose the "alpine option" for Jardine's 20F one, IIRC.
- Thread - don't use cotton thread, even poly-coated cotton core. 100% polyester and spring for the good stuff - about $5/spool.
- Quilting yarn - regular old yarn will work.

That's about it. Sew the shell together on 3.5 sides, slide the insulation inside, finish the shell, then start quilting the insulation on ~18" squares (depending on insulation type).

Customize sizes for the shell and insulation based on how big you want your quilt. Don't forget this point, though - if you sew the shell at 78" long when it lays flat, it'll shrink a few inches when you stuff the insulation inside. I'm pretty sure the quilt kits account for that...another reason to buy one.

my oldest son has the scout model,his is the older smaller version,the newer version is full size a non asym,since you are getting a larger tarp anyway
