Quite some time ago as a boy scout, i was told it was ok to use a hunk of the black ash left over from a fire as a tooth cleaner, simply break off a peice chew, spit & rinse, it gave you nice tar black spit for minute or two and left you with a fresh from the dentist feeling.
While it couldn't be a complete subsitute for a tooth brush, as some places have fire bans, it could be an occasional subsitute

Anyone else heard this? know anything about it?

Just bring a toothbrush, tooth powder and some floss.

Yes, you can. But why would you.
You can also use ash for: black if slack, white if tight. It refers to your, ah, poo.:D

Just don't use the ash from a fresh fire.

Put a generous amount in your trail mix for dentist clean teeth and fresh breath all day long. LOL!

Happy hiking!

Tastes like crap and it'll really dry your mouth out if you take a big bite, but it helps. It's abrasive and helps scrape off the plaque, and charcoal absorbs all kinds of nasties (it's what they put in your stomach for some poisons, what lines the military's chem suits, etc).

Kinda like putting kitty litter on driveway oil spots.

I'd be concerned about long-term use hurting the enamel...just speculation, though. Personally, I'd bring a tooth brush.

I think they were pulling your leg... You ought to go find them and kick their ash!

It was used for hundreds of years, but it has ben at least 150 since it has been "stylish" for lack of a better word. charcoal absorbs and if fresh, it is usually very clean, but most people would simply break off a young branch from yellow birch and chew on it to soften the end and use it to brush their teeth. Has a much better taste to it and your teeth don't turn black.

Why not go ultralight and just leave all your teeth at home? I'm sure someone out there has gotten the weight on a full set of choppers down to the nano gram. ;)

Chew on the end of one of your straps until it frays. Then use it as a tooth brush. That is if you haven't snipped off every single millimeter of excess strap yet.

Take a tooth brush and paste. A friend of mine named Big'un says, "You don't have to brush all your teeth, just the ones you want to keep!"

My nephew the dentist says that the brush and the floss and using them faithfully are what are important. Toothpaste isn't as critical as people think, but don't leave the toothbrush at home.

Toothpaste! Water, sunscreen, gatoraid, .............these are all now banned from traveling to/from the US. Is anyone else thinking that this latest ban on these things is a conspiracy by the bottled water, toothpaste companies, etc???
I drink a lot of water and last time i was in Port Authority, i had to pay $3.50 for a litre of water. So, i started carrying my own and filling it up wherever i could. Now, i think they saw me doing this and had a special meeting to say: how can we make this guy buy our water? Once again, they win. Now i will try to see how little water i can drink on my 22 hour flight home from thailand in 3 weeks. this contest isn't over yet.
