Can anyone tell me what the water situation is like around the Shining Rock Wilderness? I've been up there in the spring and there's not a lot of water then. I was thinking about spending the weekend there.

I know one piped spring near the junction of Art Loeb and the trail up to Cold Mountain, and there's one or two on the other side of Shining Rock on the Ivestor Gap Trail (?).

Anyone know if they are running now?

Anyone know if they are running now?I know that the spring on the Eastern side of the Art Loeb Trail about a tenth of a mile South from Shining Rock Gap is pretty darn reliable. I've seen the flow fluctuate from time to time, but I've never seen it dry. The other spring I use is the piped spring about two tenths from the saddle of Cold Mountain. Probably the only spring I drink directly from. I have never seen it dry up either, but I have no recent trips up there. I'll see if one of my partners in crime has been up there for blueberries. They are in full force in Aug early Sept.:sun

I've spent a lot of time hiking up there this summer and all of the springs were flowing. Cold Mountain's piped spring varies in flow but is reliable and I too do not filter it nor do I filter from the piped spring just north of the Black Balsam parking lot. The spring just south of Shining Rock Gap is reliable although sometimes during summer it flows at a trickle.....when this happens move 40 or so yards downstream and there's a pool that I have never seen dry and is easy to filter from. The spring SE of Birdstand Mountain was a tiny trickle this spring but was flowing the last time I was there .
