View Full Version : My new stove!
I'm making the switch from my MSR pocket rocket to a wood burning stove. This will be my primary 3-season stove...for most parks around my area.
Fashioned from some spare aluminum that we had around the house, and some gutter wire-mesh. It's about three times the thickness of a soda can. Used a can opener for the holes on the bottom.

When it starts to rain... I'll gather up some sticks (equivalent to an msr can in weight :p) and throw them in my pack. And NO, it doesnt melt.

I have a larger version (made from a smaller coffee can) that I use to car camp where no fire ring exist. It works well and has never deformed or melted. My old one was made from a V-8 can (48 ozs I think) and served for many, many years.

Tell us how you got the canopener to cut the notch without rippin the bottom edge of the aluminum

Some trial and error here. I made two "j's"; one smaller than the other, and simply linked them together. Then I flattened the edges out with a rubber mallet and a ski pole. To give the seam some strength and form, I gave it a slight outword "c" shape. It ends up being very solid.

The aluminum that I used was flat prior to stove construction. I marked out the holes with a nail, and then held the blank on the end of the table. Then I poked a small hole with the can opener, then gently rocked it back and forth till i made a full triangle.

Got the pot at a local camp store. It's a cheapo. Someday I'll splurge and get a ti kettle. The pot comes in a kit, but I only use the larger one, with the included lid (sick of foil lid). I also drilled some speed holes in the hot-pot holder... for speed. :banana
