I have been wanting a WM bag for a while now, but I can't really justify (or afford) spending the money for a new one. I have been looking at the Ultralight model, but I thought I would see what else is out there.

I would like to get a 15 to 20 degree 3 season WM bag, regular size and would like to get the best price possible. If you have a WM bag that you would like to find a good home for please email me (preferred) at: headchangestudio@gmail.com or send me a PM.

If you can't find a deal on a WM, you may want to settle for a 20* Campmor down bag, only $109- on sale. Even a used WM would probably cost you double that.

I too looked for a long time for a used WM bag w/no luck. You might think about saving your pennies if you've got your heart set on WM. I'll admit, my WM Ultralite is the most expensive piece of gear in my pack, but I know I can endure a hard day of hiking as long as I can be comfortable in camp.

I recently was bitten by the WM bug when I found out that my local outfitter carried them. I was amazed by the Ultralight model in both contruction and weight.

I had been talking to a guy about an Ultralight model, but he sold it to a person that contacted him before I did. It almost broke my heart. I have been watching Ebay, but the used ones almost go for the price of a new one.

I have had such good luck finding used gear here on WB I thought I would give it a shot. I will keep looking for a used one but if I can't find one used I will buy I new one when I can afford it.

You won't be disappointed, and you never know...people's plans change, and from time to time, someone will sell all of their totally new gear. It happened to me just 2 days ago and I got a piece of gear here on WB that I thought would be impossible to find. Good luck...you're in the right place, that's for sure.

Two years ago I bought a used WM Ultralight along with a set of Lekis from a guy who posted them on WB. He used the gear on a 2004 thru. I paid $200 for the bag and $50 for the poles. They arrived in good shape and are still in good shape. So keep looking -- sometimes they show up. With lots of NOBO thrus finishing now, maybe some will want to recoup their money by selling their gear.

Good luck.

I've got two Westies, and considering selling both, mostly so I can buy a new one. I guess if you don't have the money, you don't have it, but I think they're absolutely worth the money.

Let's start with my Ultralite. Bought it just before my 03' thru-hike, I believe when it was still officially rated to 25. I used it from Springer to NY and then from Glencliff to Katahdin, probably about 120 nights worth. I've used it a lot since, up at 12,000 ft in the Andes, and as recently as this week on the Long Trail. Temps hit in the low 30's, and the well used bag kept me toasty (I sleep cold). I did inevitably get it wet (condensation from tent) and will wash it. May consider selling it, and I wouldn't ask for much, but realize it has seen a lot of miles.

I also bought a Versalite, 10 degree bag for my PCT attempt this yr. In short the bag was too warm for the PCT, as I usually never had temps under the 40's. Used it about 10 nights total. Almost brand new. Would definately consider selling this, as I'm looking at buying a new Apache SMF. Understand I'd be looking to sell this bag for much closer to the regular price, as it's almost brand new. It's retail is 340 I believe.

Will definately listen to offers for both bags. PM me.

OK, now... this is where it gets confusing. There was a thread on this about the definition of "Cold sleeper vs Warm sleeper".

When you say "I sleep cold" do you mean that you get cold while sleeping easily or does it take lower temps than the bag is rated for you to get chilled? I think that the WM and Marmot bags are probably a good measuring stick for this as they are supposed to be on the mark as far as temp ratings are concerned.

I have a WM 25 degree bag but am not sure if I need more for the AT!
I have the high humidity here in Central Texas but we really haven't reached the low temps to sufficiently test this out.

Cold sleeper, as meaning i'm usually colder than most people. That's why Westy is the bag for me, as their products are conservatively rated. Most companies are full of $hit with their ratings.

Thanks A-train. I was a little worried. I'll test it out if the temps drop below 40 here this "Winter".

Aren't you on the PCT? If so, how's it going? :sun

Headchange, definitely try to get on Ebay and keep your eyes open. Depending on your size and whether you are a sound sleeper or toss around a lot while sleeping, you should look at the Ultralight or the Alpinlite. The Alpinlite is only 5 ounces more (take it easy ultralightweights), has more girth, and justifies it's weight being my most important piece of gear. Some say the Ultralight is tight. On another thread I talked about finding my Alpinlite on Ebay for $225. I never pay retail and I was ready to shell out the $375 for a new bag. I can't really afford it either, but sometimes you gotta play the game for one of the best bags out there (the best IMO). Keep looking and maybe someone will sell you theirs. I seriously think this bag is worth full retail and it will last a long time, if taken care of correctly. Once you get one, you'll love it! It took me two months to find the exact WM bag I was looking for on Ebay. You just gotta ask yourself if it's worth your time. Good luck!

Booley made a good point. I should let you know that I need at least a regular size bag. The small size, 5'6" long I think, was to small for me. A regular fits nicely.

I am also not set on just the Ultralight model. I am willing to consider other WM models. I know there may be an influx of gear soon from thru hikers finishing their trek, and I am patient man. I have other bags I can use, but the are all synthetic.

I have avoided down bags all my life because of the misconceptions associated with moisture and down bags. Since I have found this site and others and after listening to the Trailcast about Gary Schaezlein, owner and co-founder of Western Mountaineering, I know now that down is really the best choice for a sleeping bag.

A-Train,
I may be interested in your well used Ultralight if it is still in good shape, and of course considering if you decide to sell it :)

Gary Schaezlein, owner and co-founder of Western Mountaineering, is a great guy. He replaced my defective stuff sac closure free of cost when the dealer didn't claiming I didn't use it properly. So I asked the dealer for a stuff sack usage guide and he got really pissed off. Thanks Gary! Great products from WM.

You can email harpers ferry outfitters for a quote on WM bags (you should get a discounted price). Also Montbell super stretch #2 is a good bag and can be found on sale every couple of months online.

Good luck, it took me about 1 year of looking to upgrade my bag.

:bananaYAY!!!!:banana

The search is over. A kind soul was kind enough to sell me their as new/barely used WM Apache SMF bag. It should ship out Monday so I should have it by the middle of next week. I got a really good deal.

It just keeps getting better; I will also be saving 1lb 7oz of weight buy using this WM bag over my current Marmot synthetic bag.

The only downside is that the owner lost the stock WM compression/stuff sack. I still get the cotton storage bag but I will need to pick up a compression sack for it.

Anybody know what size of sack I will need? I also want to make sure that I get a sack that will help will protect it from moisture. Any recommendation on what brand of sack to look for?

i'm not real familiar with WM bags but the attitude here seems good. to those with experience, how does the WM ultralight compare to the Marmot helium?

I have the Ultralight Super. I've never slept in the Marmot but have test run one in a gear store. Temp rating of the WM Ultralight bag will be similar to the Helium. WM rates conservatively so 20 deg WM bag prob. equal to a Marmot 15 deg bag.

WM Pros: The WM bag is at least 3 ounces lighter (Marmot has 'fudged' the weight on some products in the past). The WM bag has a full draft collar (meaning it wraps all the way around your neck). Full length zipper vs. the Helium's short zipper. This give you better venting options (or ability to use unzipped, as a quilt) in warmer weather. The zipper on the Ultralight is snag-proof. WM is made in the USA.

Marmot Pros: A few inches more girth all the way around. Easier to find on sale. I think the shell fabric is a tad more durable and windproof. The hood has a nice face muff that contours to your face better than the WM bag's hood.

Other than that, the bags are comparable. Both are fine bags. For me the biggest factor was the full length zip and the made in the USA label. Make sure you don't mind a tighter fit if you choose the WM bag. I'm 6', 200 lbs. and the Ultralight works well for me (regular length).

Congrats on the Apache...they are nice bags. Don't go with the compression sack tho...it will ruin the down! Just get a nice regular stuff sack...maybe a silnylon one? Dee
