In late July 2006, my brother and I hiked S-->N through Olympic NP. Starting at Lake Quinault and finishing at Elwha.

Here are the pics (http://picasaweb.google.com/yellowjacketlite/SkylineTrail/photo#s4979420848790700050) (many with captions).

Hey that wilderness coast section is an awesome hike as is the trip to Olympia base camp. I saw some mt. goats up there that were very close. I went back and hiked the coast trail 4 times now. i've seen: bears, eagles, seals, whales, deer, and even an REI film shoot on that hike. Don't forget to carry a tide chart.

When you crossed the Narrows Bridge shown in one of your pictures, you were only 2 miles from my home on Puget Sound. I have not yet done the hike you did. Your pictures inspired me to put it on my list for next summer.

I can't believe you came to my backyard and didn't shoot me a line! The Olympics are great and defintely underlooked here in Washington.

I can't believe you came to my backyard and didn't shoot me a line!I was going to, but I thought you were on your High-Sierra trip. I did look for you while at the Lakewood transit station.:D
The Olympics are great and defintely underlooked here in Washington.I get that impression. We saw 2 guys leaving the morning we walked in. No one for 3 days and 3 folks on the way out. We didn't think we'd be able to get a ride out. Thankfully, someone was leaving right as we hit the trailhead. I'm told everyone does the Hoh and the coastal stuff. But the interior of the park is largely empty

Yeah, I actually was in California then. Because of the way the trails in the Olympics are routed, you need a lot of time if you want to explore the interior of the park. A few areas get really crowded, like the Hoh, but most of the park is empty. It seems that everyone wants to go to Snow Lake (Cascades) instead of some equally beautiful spot without all the people.

Because of the way the trails in the Olympics are routed, you need a lot of time if you want to explore the interior of the parkOr be willing to do "big miles" (aka more than 7-9 miles per day). I think our mileage break down was something like...
Wed: 7mi (walking from bus stop to trailhead, starting at 6:30pm)
Thru: 15mi (we slept in and setup camp by 7pm)
Fri: 8mi (the day we got lost and I felt like $hit [heat, exhaustion, ate too much for breakfast, maybe dehydrated a bit])
Sat: 20.5 mi (we even stopped and played in the snow and creeks for a couple of hours)
Sun: 13.5 mi (out by 2pm)"Normal" backpackers would take at least 6-7 days to do this trip. I'm certainly not "in shape", but traveling light (less than 20# wet starting out) and hiking slowly (~2mph) from sunrise to sunset allows me to see so much more.

I would like to check out the SE corner of the park (I believe some of the routes you have taken), but that will have to wait for another day.
