Wow $15 that sounds like a good deal.
Johnny Swank 10-08-2006, 18:47 Those things are awesome. We just the heck out of ours when we paddled the Mississippi River last year. I wish I had one when I thru-hiked. It would have saved a tremendous amount of time and hassle to be able to get emails from any phone instead of hunting down the closest internet access

If they don't send you a manual i found one online.

Since it's an older model don't expect it to work with digital cell phones. However, it should work with most pay phones (ones that take 800 numbers anyway) and other land line phones. Pocketmail may have a couple different numbers you can use, make sure to ask.

Can anyone tell me the average battery life for a Pocketmail?
here is the web site:

I am also looking to get one in a few months. batteries, I believe are AA and last a unbelievable amount of time, this from someone on another pocketmail thread on this site.
I used one for a year and only had to switch batteries a few times. I believe there's a meter to tell you when they're running low.
The newer PM Composers will work with some digital cellphones. It's all on the website.

Did you find any drawbacks to using one?

No, not really. Of course, I was able to email my friends and family using group mail which saved lots of time and money. Plus, I able to post to the backcountry.net mailing lists. On the CDT, several people had them and passed trail info such as water and lodging along.
Some journal sites are integrating pocketmail for direct postings, but if you're doing a Trail Journals or one here on WB (if they have them in the future without direct posting ability) it's easy enough for a transcriber to copy and paste.
I got fairly good at the two thumb method but others could really type fast. IMO, it's an excellent way to stay in touch with a group and not have to spend time looking or waiting for a computer.
JudyArmstrong 11-10-2006, 03:52 Hi, I'm looking to buy a used Pocketmail as well - would be grateful if you can let me know if you have one lying around (in full working order please).
Thanks, Judy

Looking again, the 1st is new, is cheaper and the seller has much better feedback
handlebar 11-10-2006, 16:41 Just a warning for those buying on ebay. If the Pocketmail is registered to the seller in Pocketmail's database, then the seller will need to OK the transfer to you when you go to sign up for service. I got mine on ebay and the seller was fully cooperative. Plan to keep it just in case I get the long distance hiking bug again.
