In my never ending quest to ask the dumbest question possible, I have a new candidate:

Is dehydrated food intact in its original packaging likely to be devoured by bears? I used to know the answer to this but cannot remember. Hoping to leave on NOBO thru-hike in March, ankle rehab permitting, and I am a big fan of Mountain Home, but I don't have much time in bear country.

Thanks for any help.

Yes it can be because they can smell it through that packaging or really any packaging for that matter.

But not quite true. What they smell is the food residue on the package from when it was processed. Same end result though if a bear gets a whiff of something interesting. Always safer to bear bag. Have fun!

Any animal can smell it: cats, dogs, squirrells, chipmunks, racoons. And mice ;)
I am of the belief that bears are nothing compared to the little animals ;)
